Afternoon Line

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

What did you think of the offseason moves the team made?

“Obviously, they’re very good moves. When you can add a Brian Rolston, a forward that can play on your top lines and be a guy that can be a quarterback on your power play, it’s a signifcant transaction for you. And with Bobby (Holik), you’re getting a guy that can give you eight, 10 quality minutes and take key faceoffs for you. He has the experience, obviously, and he’s a big man. On top of all of that, you’ve got two guys that were here and both wanted to come back and are excited about being back. And, also the fact what they bring inside the dressing room and the leadership qualities they both have.”

Blues May Be On The Outside Looking In

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Adam Proteau of the Hockey News,

Now, could the Blues surprise and defy their cynics? Of course they could. However, when it comes to predictions, it’s all about the likelihood of something happening, not the best-case scenario. And to the majority of us here at THN, the likelihood is the Blues will be on the outside of the playoff picture for the fourth consecutive season.

The truth is, a complete reversal of fortune such as the Philadelphia Flyers enjoyed last season is more an aberration than a reasonable expectation. Once you’ve cleared the decks – the way the Blues did during a bumpy change in ownership that began in 2005 – the subsequent restoration project almost inevitably requires years to complete.

All this is just something to bear in mind when our collective and individual predictions are before your eyes.

George Malik at Snapshots has the complete itinerary including a baptism,

Andreas Lilja will baptize their two children when the master trophy is visiting and of course, use it as baptismal font.

“Our children, Tilda, 5, and Maja, 10 months, will be baptized now, and it will be a little different to do it this way, “says Lilja, who also invited 75 guests to a party in Helsingborg.

Should The Oilers Go ‘Old School’

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Dave Staples at The Cult of Hockey,

Patrick LaForge, the Oilers president, recently told Dan Tencer of 630 CHED that the Oilers would be announcing a new third jersey for the 2008-09 season, likely in August….

Katz’s vision for the team is to be an elite squad, one that competes deep into the playoffs every year.

So maybe it’s time to bring back some of that old time Oilers style, a take-off on the Oilers classic uniform of the early 1980s done up in the modern uniform style.

Top Venues

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Habs Inside/Out,

Sports Illustrated has asked its writers to pick their favourite venues.

Michael Farber chose the Forum. In recalling the ghosts, Farber writes:

They were in the rafters with the retired jerseys, stampeding with the fans when the doors opened before the game so they could get a good spot in the standing-room section, hanging out in the cramped corridors where they were getting two-packs-a-day’s worth of second-hand smoke during intermissions…

I am pointing you to the Habs Inside/Out page where you can get the link to the Farber story and also see the only picture of Howie Morenz’s funeral at the Forum…

Canucks GM Feels They Are A Playoff Team

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Jim Jamieson of the Vancouver Province,

...Gillis was asked if there was any progress on a new contract for two-thirds of the Canucks’ first line—Daniel and Henrik Sedin—who are entering their final contract year before becoming unrestricted free agents.

Gillis said he’d started working on an extension already. “We hope to get it concluded in the not too distant future,” Gillis said. The Sedins’ agent, J.P. Barry, however, told The Province on Tuesday that there had been little progress on that front.

The new GM said he believes with the player moves he has made so far, he feels the Canucks are “a couple of pieces away from being a very competitive team.” He said he’s confident the Canucks can be a playoff team this season.

Fight Time

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Daniel Carcillo as told to Steve Greenberg of the Sporting News via MSNBC,

Here are his 10 tips for surviving and thriving as a middleweight fighter…

Even a bleeder has to have thick skin

I know hockey fights supposedly are about showing up — not who wins and who loses — but when you get beat up, it’s pretty tough to swallow. It’s embarrassing, especially when it happens in front of 18,000 people and the 40 guys on both benches. Bouncing back is the biggest thing. It’s like being a closer in baseball.

Update 3:18pm ET (alanah): Just a quick FYI about this article—bear in mind that it was originally published back in May. MSNBC picked it up without noting the original publication date.
