Denis Demoted

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Tampa Tribune,

As disappointing as the regular season was for Lightning G Marc Denis, the news that he would be replaced as Johan Holmqvist’s backup by rookie Karri Ramo for Tampa Bay’s first-round Eastern Conference playoff series against the New Jersey Devils had to sting even more.
“Yep,” said Denis, who was succinct Tuesday in his responses to every question.
Did he just not want to get into it publicly?
“Pretty much, yeah,” he said.
Had Coach John Tortorella and he discussed the decision?
“We had a talk,” Denis said.

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the San Jose Sharks,

San Jose – It is with great sadness that the San Jose Sharks organization must announced the passing of goaltending coach Warren Strelow, following a series of illnesses.
Strelow, 73, passed away peacefully early this morning in Worcester, Mass., surrounded by his family.
The Strelow family plans to hold a memorial to celebrate Warren’s life following the conclusion of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.  Funeral arrangements are pending at this time.
“As we mourn the passing of our friend Warren Strelow, we celebrate the substantial contributions he made towards the success of the San Jose Sharks over the past 10 seasons,” said Sharks President and Chief Executive Officer Greg Jamison.  “Our deepest condolences, along with our thoughts and prayers, reside with his family.  He will be greatly missed.”

Help Out The NHL Fans DirecTV

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

By posting this, maybe it will open some eyes.  This is a DirecTV issue, not an NHL issue.  Maybe we can persuade DirecTV a bit…

from a KK reader,

Could you do anything to help persuade DirecTV to put Versus HD games on their channel 95 special events channel instead of meaningless April MLB regular season games.
DirecTV has no HD hockey scheduled for the next two days at least and it is quite frustrating to know that Versus is producing games in HD and that viewers can’t watch them.
I have heard the NHL say many times that HD is the future of televised hockey, but it’s not so good when even people with HDTV sets can’t watch it.

More information can be found at this AVS Forum thread...

Head Games

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from George Johnson at ESPN writing about the Wings/Flames series…

Among those who believe Hasek may be vulnerable is left winger Kristian Huselius, a revelation this season after piling up 34 goals and 77 points. After all, The Dominator, for all his brilliance, has a reputation for being, uh, somewhat erratic.
“He didn’t face a lot of shots this season,” Huselius said. “We’ve got to change that. We’ve got to get in his face, throw a lot of traffic in front, screen him. He won’t like it. We want to upset him. Make him work. Wear him down.
“He’s a great goalie. He’s won a Stanley Cup. But he’s old.” Huselius smiled. “And maybe when, as you get older, it’s easier to get p—-ed off.”

The Other Team

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

For the fans of teams not involved in the playoffs, have you adopted a team you would like to see win the Cup?
If so tell me why.
Also, for the fans of teams involved in the playoffs, what team will you choose if your “homer” is eliminated?

So join Mark, Byrd and me over on WNYMedia.net tomorrow at 8:00 pm as we discuss the upcoming Sabres series with the Islanders and various other sports items. Media Mumbo-Jumbo (Joe)

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Mercury News,

Now, as the Sharks begin the 2007 Stanley Cup campaign today in Nashville, Rivet shakes his head when asked about Sports Illustrated calling Thornton one of five NHL stars whose reputations are on the line this postseason.
“That’s media mumbo-jumbo,” said Rivet, pausing long enough to come up with a printable phrase. “It’s disgusting to even hear that. He’s a warrior.”
Over his career, Thornton has 27 points in 46 postseason games. Nine of those points came in 11 playoff games with the Sharks a year ago, earning praise from his coach and teammates. But fairly or unfairly, the label lingers.
“That perception comes from a prior time and place,” Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson said.

KK Challenge - Conference Quarterfinals

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

Open to all KK members, if not a member, register on the left sidebar under KK sections.

Instead of telling me who will win each matchup, I need to know the total (combined) amount of goals that will be scored during the quarterfinals (all games).
Leave your answer in the comment section of this post and if more than one person guesses the correct answer, a random drawing will be held to select the winner.
If no one answers correctly, the prize will be added to the next round (a little bit of a twist from other KK Challenges).
Winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to either Shop.NHL.com or IceJerseys.com.
All entries must be timestamped by 6:00pm EDT on Wednesday, April 11, 2007.  No emails accepted, you must enter your guess in this post.

note: original post date was 4/9/07- moved to first page for more exposure…

Nashville Needs To Win

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Tennessean,

Coach Barry Trotz and his assistants have guided the team to 38, 49 and 51 regular-season victories, respectively, the past three seasons. But Predators General Manager David Poile has not exercised the option year on the coaching staff’s contracts and has said he won’t discuss new deals until the season is over.
That would seem to indicate playoff performance will weigh heavily on the staff’s future. Nashville has reached the playoffs in each of the past two seasons, losing in the first round as an eighth seed in 2004 and as a fourth seed last year.
“If the organization is happy, it won’t be a problem. If they’re not, they’ll move in a different direction.’‘
The series against the Sharks would appear to be as pivotal a time as any in the history of the Predators: so much reward for victory, so much concern with a loss.
