The Propects Arrive In Anaheim

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Tim Wharnsby at the Globe and Mail,

The National Hockey League invited the top six North American prospects to Game 2 of the 2007 Stanley Cup final and nobody’s eyes were wider than juniors Karl Alzner and Keaton Ellerby.
The 6-foot-4 ½ Ellerby, who hails from Strathmore, Alta. and plays on the backend for the Kamloops Blazers, also shook hands with the player he idolizes, Anaheim 6-foot-6 defenceman Chris Pronger and almost could look him in the eye.

Check out the video profile of the prospects mentioned- Karl Alzner, Keaton Ellerby and Sam Gagner.

Another Fire Put Out

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Spector at his Fox Sports blog,

As always, some of the speculation over potential free-agent movement is a little wild, specifically that some forget teams now operate under a salary cap.
That cap is expected to rise from the current $44 million to possibly $48 million, perhaps even higher, leaving roughly half of the 30 NHL teams with more than $20 million in available cap space with which to bolster their respective rosters for next season.
Sadly, some rumormongers seem unaware which of those teams have this available cap space.
A recent internet rumor suggested the Dallas Stars might have interest in Montreal Canadiens defenseman Sheldon Souray should he become an unrestricted free agent on July 1….
So to those reporting on potential destinations for this summer’s top free agents, remember to keep the salary cap in mind when posting your speculations.

Sens Plan Parade Route

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the CBC,

If the Senators win their final series against the Anaheim Ducks, the Stanley Cup won’t just come back to Ottawa — it will also visit Gatineau, Que.
Both Ottawa Mayor Larry O’Brien and the Senators’ hockey club have confirmed that a Stanley Cup parade would pass through Gatineau, just across the Ottawa River, Mayor Marc Bureau said Wednesday.
“It’s a team that is maybe more from Ottawa, but 15 to 20 per cent of the spectators at Scotia[bank] Place are francophones nonetheless,” he told Radio-Canada in French.

continued... and in my neck of the woods, public talk of a parade is a no-no until victory is achieved…

Carlyle After The Morning Skate

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

Q. Randy, with the salary cap, are we going to see a lot of parity, lot of different teams in the Stanley Cup Finals, like the Super Bowl, you have different teams every year?
COACH RANDY CARLYLE: Well, I think that the distribution of the talent was very evident in the regular season this year for sure. If you look at the number of teams that were able to achieve 100 points, you look at the competitiveness to make the playoffs, teams 1 through 8, both divisions, were very, very tightly grouped.
And I think that’s closer to the norm. And part of that reason is the salary cap, and people are somewhat on a level playing field by the structure of it.

More Perspective

Blog: Abel to Yzerman By IwoCPO

On the eve of Game 1 versus the “favored” Flames we wrote a post with a similar title to this one, mentioning the fact that one of our A2Y readers was dealing with the pain of losing a grandparent: a WWII vet.

Today, something similar.  A sportswriter from my hometown of Saginaw made a trip to Norfolk, VA this week and realized sports is a nifty hobby, even a pastime for some.  But nothing when compared with real life.

Suddenly, worrying about whether the Detroit Red Wings were going to beat the Anaheim Ducks to earn a berth in the Stanley Cup Finals—they didn’t—or the Detroit Pistons will dispatch the Cleveland Cavaliers and move on to the NBA Finals—the jury is still out on that one—didn’t seem nearly as important. Instead, the only thing that mattered was walking up to my son on that pier in Virginia , grabbing his extended right hand and pulling him to me to give him a long, hard hug.

Media Talk

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

via SportsBusiness Daily,

Versus earned a 0.62 overnight Nielsen cable rating for Game One of the Senators-Ducks Stanley Cup Finals on Monday night, down 28.7% from a 0.87 for Oilers-Hurricanes Game One last season. The net earned a 1.7 rating in L.A. on Monday, its best mark ever in the market. The three top local markets were Buffalo (3.9), Denver (2.2) and Pittsburgh.

via SportsBusiness Journal,

NBC has sold out its inventory and said that demand “has been strong throughout the playoffs.” The network claims it and the NHL both are “poised to make a profit again this year” from their TV agreement. Verizon Wireless, MasterCard, Gillette and the U.S. Marines will all advertise during NBC’s coverage of the Finals.
Versus’ sales results “are on par with last year.” However, several ad buyers said that hockey and the Cup Finals “had not been a focus for them this year, and though network sales are strong, they described cable sales as lackluster.
