Simon Should Not Have Been On The Ice

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Scott Morrison of CBC Sports,

Where is the common sense?

Simon shouldn’t have been anywhere near the ice against the Rangers for all the obvious reasons. And especially since the Rangers decided to dress Ryan Hollweg, the player Simon chopped down his with his stick back on March 8 to earn the supreme wrath of the league.

Can you say retribution?

But there they were together on the ice Monday night in Long Island and the mayhem was, well, as predictable and it was entirely avoidable. Hollweg and Simon sparred and jabbed with each other.

Penguins Depend On Eaton

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,

“If I can chip one in every once in a while, that’s great, but that’s not my role” said Eaton, who has 16 goals in 348 regular-season and 23 playoff games with Philadelphia, Nashville and the Penguins.

“There’s no mystery what my role is. I’ve got to be solid defensively, good in my own end, block shots.”

That, and not any offensive prowess, on the power play or otherwise, is why the Penguins signed him as a free agent in July 2006.

It’s what the Penguins got from him last season, just not enough of it.

“Sweat”-er Talk

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Calgary Sun,

Having now sampled the new, high-tech togs unveiled by all 30 NHL teams this year for a handful of pre-season games, Flames players are understanding why the word sweat is in sweater.

“My undershirt is just soaked,” said forward Owen Nolan. “I find I’m changing them in between periods and a lot more frequently than before. I feel like I’m working out in a sauna.”...

“With the other ones, you had holes and got more of a breeze in there—maybe that’s why you got that drying out effect,” said blueliner Cory Sarich. “These seem to heat you up more because there’s not that two-way air flow.

“Besides, the jerseys don’t feel much different than the old ones. I don’t know if they’ve accomplished what they want. From talking to guys, I don’t feel they’re making a difference on the ice.”

Andrew Ladd Plays His Way

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the News & Observer,

Although Ladd is prized for his physical play, Rutherford noted that a key step in his development will be learning how to harness that desire to hit everybody on the ice and put opponents through the boards every shift. Yet Canes coaches and Ladd himself are quick to note there’s no call to change his style of play.

“For me to be successful and to bring the most out of my game, I need to go, like you said, ‘100 miles an hour.’ I’ve gotta be banging bodies and getting dirty, getting to the front of the net,” Ladd said. “That’s just the way I play. Injuries are part of the game. They’re frustrating, but I’m not going to change the way I play, because that would take me back a step.”

Ozolinsh Now Motivated

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Mercury News,

Finding a new home in the NHL was Ozolinsh’s goal when he began training over the summer, and he gives the usual reasons why that is important to him: love of the game, pursuit of the Stanley Cup.

But there is another as well.

Suggest to him that maybe it has something to do with his legacy, about not having his final NHL moments be those rough ones with the Rangers, and he looks up and smiles.

“Exactly.”

Rookie Dman Impressive In Columbus

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Columbus Dispatch,

Kris Russell, the Blue Jackets’ prized 20-year-old defenseman, has what they call “hockey sense.” What is this rare quality? It’s difficult to give a complete answer, but for those who possess the quality, the game seems logical.

“It’s amazing watching him,” Rick Nash said as he watched Russell from the press box in Nationwide Arena on Sunday night, when the Jackets played an exhibition against the Buffalo Sabres….

Russell is in his third Blue Jackets camp, trying to make the big club right out of juniors. He’s dealing with bigger, faster players coming at him at a speed he has rarely encountered. Most defensemen need years of seasoning before their decision-making processes, and their confidence, are up to NHL standards. Russell is an exception. He has a cool head. And he has been the Jackets’ best defenseman, bar none, to this point in training camp. They can’t cut him. He won’t be in Syracuse. Watch.

New York Fight Night

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

To Rick DiPietro, it was simply a matter of “the intensity being ratcheted up against the Rangers, no matter where or when we play them.”

To Al Montoya, it was simply a matter of, “basically not really having a choice, but sticking up for my teammates even though I’d rather have been in the [game] to showcase my talents.”

Opportunity Lost

Blog: Abel to Yzerman By IwoCPO

I can only find one reference to it, and it’s far from definitive.

Tonight could have marked the return of former Wing Brendan Shanahan to Joe Louis Arena, but no such drama.

Shanahan was in the lineup Monday when the Rangers played the New York Islanders in Long Island.

Like many NHL teams, the Rangers prefer not to play veterans on consecutive nights in the exhibition season.

Just come out and say it Ted.  Shanahan’s not playing.  He doesn’t say so because he doesn’t know, and he doesn’t know because he didn’t ask.  Ted Kulfan assumes Brendan Shanahan’s not playing, and that assumption is probably correct.  But I guarantee he didn’t make the phone call to find out, because if he had he would have written this:  Brendan Shanahan won’t be in the lineup for the Rangers tonight.

2007 Wing Preview:  Stand by for 11

Blog: Abel to Yzerman By IwoCPO

I had this season preview nearly finished about thirty minutes ago, then I started thinking about that Dive fan ripping that duck’s head off.  Did it bother some of us?  Of course it did.  No one wants to see a ducky treated like that in public, even though it happens half a million times each day by allegedly sober people in whatever places they breed ducks so that Dive fans can eat said duck with their cold white wine between periods.

“A Sure Thing”

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from The Maven at MSG Network,

There will be another NHL expansion and you can put your money on Las Vegas as being the 31st team. The reasons why Sin City has the lead are many. Start with the fact that it would be very difficult for ownership to reject a HUGE entrance fee which would top anything the league has known. Plus a new rink is going up in LV and the very influential Phil Anschutz is behind the move.
