GLENDALE, ARIZONA —- Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have signed goaltender Jason LaBarbera to a two-year contract. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Gaborik Signs with Rangers, 5 Years

TSN is reporting Gaborik to the Rangers. 5 years x $5.75 [million]

Former Minnesota Wild winger Marian Gaborik has agreed to a five-year contract with the New York Rangers.

The Slovakian forward will earn $5.75 million per year.


Update 5.29pm ET: UPDATED SALARY—TSN corrected their story, now saying the salary amount is 5 years at $7.5 million.

NHL Does Well In The Ultimate Standings

NEW YORK (July 1, 2009) – Five NHL teams are among the Top 10 professional sports franchises when it comes to paying fans back for their investment of time, money and passion, according to ESPN the Magazine’s Ultimate Standings report. The Carolina Hurricanes are the top ranked NHL franchise and second overall among all professional sports teams, followed by the Detroit Red Wings (#4), Washington Capitals (#6), Pittsburgh Penguins (#8) and St. Louis Blues (#10).  This marks the most NHL teams ever represented among the Top 10 in the report’s seven-year history. The full report is available in the current issue of ESPN the Magazine on newsstands Friday.

Here’s what I’m hearing on Rob Scuderi. I’m told “4-5 teams” are in the hunt for the solid free-agent blueliner. I’m told the Pittsburgh Penguins will hear again from their camp as a courtesy, but it’s unlikely the team will have enough cap space to match.

Columbus Signs Sami Pahlsson, 3 Years

The Blue Jackets have signed center Sami Pahlsson to a three-year contract worth $7.95 million, The Dispatch has learned. That’s an annual average salary of $2.65 million.

“Sami Pahlsson is a very good two-way center who can play against the top players in the league and strengthens our hockey club at the center ice position,” said Howson.  “He won a Stanley Cup with Anaheim two years ago, played in the Finals in 2003 and won a gold medal with Sweden at the last Olympics, so he brings valuable experience at the highest level of competition to our dressing room.”
