Afternoon Line- Part 2

What credible candidate can the NHLPA possibly recruit to come in and work in an office with the toxicity level of a night-time soap opera? It’s almost as if Melrose Place were back on the air.

Oilers Have No Plans To Sign Comrie

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

via Dan Barnes of the Edmonton Journal,

Notwithstanding persistent rumours, the Oilers are not in negotiations with Mike Comrie and have no plans to sign him, Tambellini said.

“Mike’s a good player,” he said Thursday at an announcement about Telus’s new sponsorship of the Oilers. “No decisions have been made to add any player to our roster. We’ve got a full roster, we’ve got salary cap issues. Nothing’s been decided at this point.”

Maltby Knows The End Is Getting Closer

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Chris McCosky of the Detroit News,

“I know I am a lot closer to the end than I am the beginning,” he said after a conditioning skate Thursday. “But this isn’t something I am going to address this year. I love playing. I love coming to the rink. Listen, if my career would have ended two or three years ago I wouldn’t have had any regrets.

“But I am going to just see how things hold up from a physical standpoint; see how I feel injury-wise. There’s always going to be a time (to leave); everyone has to move on. Whether it’s after this year for me, we’ll see.”

To measure Maltby’s on-ice effectiveness by his statistics is to completely miss the point of his value. He’s a grinder, a dependable defensive-minded winger who’s has long been on of the game’s effective pests

Afternoon Line

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

I was a Detroit Red Wings fan when I was growing up, because my hero was Gordie Howe. When he retired, I shifted my allegiance to the Montreal Canadiens, and I have stuck with them even though they have fallen on pretty hard times.

Healy Defends His Credibility

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,

Healy, a former NHL goaltender and broadcast analyst who joined the NHLPA under Kelly 14 months ago, was especially critical of an internal office review that he said attacked his credibility.

The woman who conducted the review, Anne Marie Turnbull, accused Healy of misleading players regarding the role of former superstars Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux in previous union matters, Healy said.

“I would never and have not misled or told any untruths to any player. I can not [sic] sit back and continue to perform my duties when my Players’ Association co-workers unjustifiably impugn my credibility in front of the players I represent and fire shots against Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux, two of the greatest players in the game, who have benefited every player in this Players’ Association,” Healy wrote in a letter to the members of the NHLPA executive board, which was obtained by ESPN.com.

With a Stanley Cup championship finally under his belt, Pittsburgh Penguins defenceman Philippe Boucher had decided that the time is right to step away from the game…

“I have always admired athletes that have retired as champions and I am humbled to have the chance to count myself among them,” said Boucher. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank my teammates, my coaches and the organizations I played with over the years.  I am going to miss being with the boys.”

Waddell Would Like Kovalchuk Contract Settled By The Time The Puck Drops

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Kevin Allen of Mucking and Grinding at USA TODAY,

Clearly Waddell wants to havet Kovalchuk signed before the season because he becomes an unrestricted free agent next summer. When he faced a similar situation with Hossa two seasons ago, he went into the season without a new deal and Waddell was unable to convince him to sign. Waddell had to deal him at the trade deadline.

The Thrashers have also pondered signing free agent Nikolei Zherdev, although Waddell declined to say where that stood. My guess is that Zherdev could get his best deal in the Kontinental Hockey League.

All Vinny Lecavalier

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Damian Cristodero of Lightning Strikes,

Q: Are you surprised you’re still here?

A: Not really, no. It got intense, but to tell you the truth, I didn’t really know. They were just rumors to me.

Q: Is life without trade rumors a relief?

A: I was just tired of talking about it; people coming up to me. I left for a few weeks and it felt good after the season. I didn’t want to hear anything about anything. I wanted to have a little break. Obviously, when I went back to Montreal (before the draft), that started again. But since July 1, it’s been pretty low key. It’s very nice.

Q: How do you feel about the team going into camp?

A: I’m feeling very good. You look at the defensemen we have. By getting these veteran guys who have a lot of experience, it all starts there. They have more experience in the zone and playing defensively. They can get the puck out, which will help us offensively. To get those big defensive guys, it’s going to change the look of the team, definitely.
