It Always Starts On A Pond

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from John McGourty of NHL.com,

It was seven years ago that “Pond of Dreams,” the Emmy-nominated short hockey film, was shown before the 2000 NHL All-Star Game in Toronto. Viewers of the national television broadcast and fans in the Air Canada Centre watched as young NHL stars Jaromir Jagr, Pavel Bure, Eric Lindros and Paul Kariya paid tribute to three retired greats – Gordie Howe, Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux – while playing pick-up hockey on a small Ontario pond.

“I’m Wayne Gretzky,” said one, unaware that Gretzky, Howe and Lemieux were walking toward them in the video.

“I’m Gordie Howe,” said the second.

“You’re always Gordie Howe,” chided a third.

Promoting The Winter Classic

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

NEW YORK (December 21, 2007) – The National Hockey League (NHL) is promoting the upcoming AMP Energy NHL Winter Classic outdoor game through print, TV and radio ads, as well as a viral video that is being distributed online.

The print ad, premiering Monday, Dec. 24 in Sports Illustrated, depicts a neighborhood outdoor pick-up game with the phrase “It’s a Great Day For Hockey,” written in large icy letters at the top. This ad also will run in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and Toronto Star the week of the game.

A new national TV spot promoting the upcoming game is currently running on NBC, CBC, VERSUS, TSN, HDNet, NHL Network, NHL.com and in NHL Club arenas. The spot begins with the definition “Cold: having little or no warmth,” positioned across the screen before cutting to a fast-paced version of “Auld Lang Syne” over game footage of the Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins. The spot ends with an image of a football field frosting over and becoming a hockey rink.

The NHL has also released a viral web video titled “Vapor”.  Watch the video…

Holiday Wishes

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

Before you leave the web for more important things, like spending valuable time with family and friends, I wanted to wish all of you a peaceful and glorious Holiday Season.

The hockey section of KK will be going “dark” around noon ET on Monday, December 24th and return on December 26th.  Posting will be a little less frequent beginning today through the 26th.

May you and your loved ones experience the true meaning of Christmas and keep those less fortunate in your thoughts.

It has been a great year at KK and thanks go out to Alanah, Bill and KK contributors George and Steve.  We will be back in full force soon and look forward to bringing you “everything hockey” in the coming months.

Without you, the members and guests of Kukla’s Korner, this little hockey site would not be possible.  Thank you and remember, if you have had too many “pops”, pass the keys to someone who hasn’t.  I want each and everyone of you back reading KK!

A Look At Concussions

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Toronto Star,

Concussions remain mostly a mystery, even to the doctors who spend their lives studying them. But the human lab that is the NHL makes this much clear - the human brain can only absorb so much pounding.

Eric Lindros believes the most overlooked part is the human element - and this series takes you inside that.

“When you go through some of these things, it’s hell on wheels, not just for yourself but for everyone surrounding you,” said Lindros.

View the slideshow for an early look inside concussions in the NHL.

Still Hockeytown

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from PRNewswire,

Attention Sports Editors: Following is the text of a letter from Gary Topolewski, Detroit advertising creative executive, to Sports Illustrated magazine, regarding SI’s article suggesting that Detroit may be losing its claim to the Hockeytown title.

Dear Mr. Farber,

I read your article about passing the Hockeytown mantle to St. Paul with mixed feelings. I was the Chief Creative Officer at an ad agency called Bozell here in Detroit when we convinced the Detroit Red Wings to adopt the Hockeytown label as their own.

Signs Of Parity

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Cam Cole of the Vancouver Sun,

There we sat in GM Place, studying the NHL’s daily stats package at the morning skate Thursday, with 42 per cent of the 2007-08 regular season in the books, and only five out of 30 teams under .500.

That’s hard to fathom, since traditional sports logic dictates that the number of juggernauts in a given league ought to be balanced by a similar number of bottom-feeders, and the slightly above-average should roughly equal the middling-poor.

Practice Your Stickhandling

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Daily News,

Their company, Skillz Systems, has developed an interactive stickhandling training system delivered in a gaming format. QuickStickz provides immediate feedback and allows players to keep score.

Confident it will revolutionize the hockey world, the men say that other devices on the market help players work on their skating and shooting, but so far there has been nothing available beyond balls, pylons or videos for improving stickhandling.
