While much of the rookie attention is being placed on some of the outstanding 18-, 19- and 20-year olds, the rookie who might be having the biggest impact on his team is Buffalo Sabres' 25-year-old goalie Ryan Miller. Four years after winning the Hobey Baker Trophy as college hockey's best player, Miller has been a major factor in the Sabres' best start in almost 30 years.

A Bit Slow Today

I went to the dentist this morning with a little toothache and four hours later, arrive home after having oral surgery done. Ouch!!! Will be updating a little later today, hopefully when the vicadin kicks in.

Devils Clearing Cap Room

Lou Lamoriello has a little salary cap room if he decides to strengthen his .500 Devils. By noon today, the Devils' president will have 836G more cap space to use now or save against the day he must find $4.18 million in cap room to activate Patrik Elias. Lamoriello yesterday waived enforcer Krzysztof Oliwa, who will be assigned to Albany if he clears the other 29 teams. "I understand the game has changed, that Lou was forced to make a business decision in an effort to minimize the team's salary cap issues," said Oliwa, who said he returned to New Jersey to be near his 9-year-old daughter. "However, I would have signed elsewhere in July of '04 if I thought my position on the team was unstable. I had opportunities to play in Minnesota, Montreal and Calgary and passed them up. I am extremely disappointed."

update 3:50pm, Oliwa has cleared waivers, 29 teams passed on him.

Wanted Hurricane

Erik Cole is a wanted man, but he won't be going anywhere for the time being. Sources say the Senators talked to the Carolina Hurricanes about a deal for the speedy winger in the off-season, but there haven't been any discussions lately and it doesn't sound like he'll be moving.

Totally Unpredictable

The new NHL is teeming with shots, injustices, weird rules and flukey bounces. It is altogether unpredictable, hideously unjust and darn near irresistible. All those elements and more were provided last night at the ACC as the Leafs beat the Boston Bruins 5-4 in penalty shots on a goal by Eric Lindros. This despite being outshot 53-32 by the Bruins in regulation. Referees Marc Joannette and Chris Rooney gave the Bruins twenty minutes in power-play time compared to 6:13 for Toronto. Included in the parade was a cheap call to Ken Klee for hooking with 2:10 left in regulation.

Nashville The “Model” For The New NHL

It's usually the other way around. Upstart new teams tend to look up to the older, more established franchises. That wasn't the case Monday, however, when Blackhawks coach Trent Yawney looked ahead to his team's road game tonight against the Nashville Predators. The Hawks, of course, are one of the NHL's "Original Six'' franchises. The Predators are in their only seventh season, with just one playoff appearance to show for the first six. Still, Yawney called the unbeaten Predators "the model of the 'new game.'''

OLN Tonight

I am watching the Wings game tonight on INHD2, the HD feed from OLN. Soem flaws along the way, like missing commercial breaks in the first period and 1/2 of the second period. I really think JD and Doc don't know when the breaks are coming and just continue to talk even when a commercial break is taken. In the 3rd period, a possible fight scenario broke out near the Wings net, and bam, off to a commercial. Now back to the game, and we are watching the roving reporter giving us a repot on visors. No mention of any fight, what happened and as I said, Doc and JD are just talking through the whole game, not sure when the commercials are or are not being taken. OLN needs some major work quickly. Now the game ends, and within 10 seconds after the final horn, INHD2 feed is gone. No inteviews, no good bye, no nothing. Just watching the INHD logo on the screen.

Boulton Gets Six Games

The National Hockey League has handed Atlanta forward Eric Boulton a six-game suspension for a vicious elbow to the head of Tampa Bay defenseman Paul Ranger. The hit prompted a slew of outraged responses from across the league - including a profanity-laced tirade from Tampa Bay coach John Tortorella. Boulton apparently waived his right to an in-person meeting with Campbell, but the NHL Players Association refused to grant Boulton's request for a quicker mandate.

Future Comes Quick For Ward

Cam Ward knew from the day he was drafted by Carolina with its first pick in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, 25th overall, that he was the goaltender of the future for the Hurricanes. He just had no idea that the future would arrive so fast. Today, Ward is quickly emerging as Carolina's No. 1 keeper as he posts downright gaudy numbers — 3-1-1 with a 2.56 goals-against average and .910 save percentage — while veteran Martin Gerber remained idled by a hip injury he suffered in his first appearance this season. Not that the 21-year-old is complaining.
