A Little Help For The Fan 960 In Calgary

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

I have been listening to The Fan 960 in Calgary all morning just to get a feel of what is going on in Calgary.
The jocks there took a shot at the Joe Louis PA announcer because he could not pronounce the last name of Kristian Huselius.
They have no idea who that man is, so I thought I would give them a little background on Budd Lynch…

A native of Windsor, Ontario, Lynch joined the Essex Scottish Regiment of the Canadian Forces during World War II; he lost his right arm during combat.
Returning home from the war, he joined the Red Wings, with the team winning the Stanley Cup during his first season. In fact, Detroit won the Stanley Cup four times during his first five years with the club.

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

From TSN,

One of the NHL’s longest-serving general managers is staying on the job even longer.
The Carolina Hurricanes have given GM Jim Rutherford a five-year contract extension.
Rutherford has served as the franchise’s GM for 13 years - dating back to its time as the Hartford Whalers.

The Refs Were Right

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Jim Baumbach at Newsday,

Stickle agreed to talk, but you’re not going to like what he told me. “I’m happy with the job that was done tonight,” he said.
As part of his job, Stickle sits in the press box and focuses on the officials, watching every call (and non-call) live and then on the replay. He was a linesman for 27 years, so he knows penalties.
“I did that job for a long time, so I see things that could become a bone of contention and take a look at it,” Stickle said. “Sometimes we’re wrong, too. But not in these cases tonight.”

Mid-Day Reminder

Blog: Abel to Yzerman By IwoCPO

Get your nappy naps in today.  Drink your milkie milk.  Rest.  Don’t work, because it’s useless.  Don’t start drinking until at least 1500.  Don’t expect too much.  Anticipate stress tonite. Look for the “first ten minutes” of fury from the Flames.  Look for a few questionable calls.  Blah, blah, bluh-blah, blah, blah.  I’ll be out of the loop until later this afternoon, unless I hear news regarding Stillwuzzi, etc.

We Want Our HDTV

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from TV Predictions,

With HDTV in roughly 30 million U.S. homes, shouldn’t the networks have a better handle on providing sports in high-def?
After all, we’ve all been sold that sports is the driver of High-Definition TV; that people are rushing to buy sets to watch their favorite teams in crystal-clear HD.
So why can’t we see them in high-def?!

Stop The Headshots

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the National Post,

So far, the NHL hasn’t had a worst-case scenario with head shots. Eric Lindros played the game like a bull, a style that played a large part in his concussion troubles. But for the most part, it has been players like Adam Deadmarsh, Jason Allison, Matthew Lombardi, and Tim Connolly that have had concussions impact their careers. No Crosbys. No Sedins. No Joe Thorntons.
“They see Patty Eaves and they just take notice,” Spezza said. “I think they’re waiting for it to happen to Jarome Iginla, Sidney Crosby, or someone real important. They’ve got to fix it now.”

Ratings & More

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from William Houston of the Globe and Mail,

NBC earned a 1.4 overnight rating (percentage of households tuned in) for its Flames-Red Wings telecast on Sunday, down 6.7 per cent from its rating a year ago for a regional broadcast. NBC’s Saturday regional telecast, Penguins-Senators and New York Rangers-Atlanta Thrashers, earned a 1.2 overnight, down 7.7 per cent.

Yesterday, KK member snafu pointed out Don Cherry taking a cheap shot at Pavel Datsyuk and Houston agrees,

What did Pavel Datsyuk do to deserve Don Cherry’s attack on Saturday? Well, nothing, really, except for being a European, leading his team in scoring and signing a fat seven-year contract extension for close to $7-million (U.S.) annually.
To assist Cherry in his cheap shot of Datsyuk, Hockey Night compiled a couple of clips of retired Red Wings star Steve Yzerman falling to the ice to block shots.

Head Hunting

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Buffalo News,

Miller took two hard shots off his mask, summoning medical attention right after each.
“It was just a matter of not being able to get the hell out of the way. I was just stuck,” Miller said. “You either take it off the head or surrender a goal. I couldn’t get my glove around on either of them….
“Obviously, I think they were shooting at his head,” Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said with a smile before making a theatrical throat clear. “They hit him twice, so they must be shooting at his head. There are times you shoot at a goaltender’s head, try to rattle him. I thought maybe after two in a row . . . ”
