The Connolly Talks

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

There has been talk this morning the Sabres are still negotiating a new contract for Tim Connolly.  Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News feels he will be moved…

My previous suggestion that the Sabres re-sign him was based on him returning at the right price and having a healthy lineup around him get into the playoffs. Apparently, he doesn’t want to come back for less. The banged-up Sabres could miss the postseason even if they keep him, so why keep him?

Columbus and Vancouver are interested in Connolly, but Chicago appears to have an inside track. The Blackhawks are looking for a No. 2 center and would be willing to include defenseman James Wisniewski in a package with the Sabres. The two teams were talking Tuesday.

Sources tell TSN the Buffalo Sabres have tabled a two-year contract extension at better than $4 million per season to keep forward Tim Connolly in Buffalo.

Although the offer is considered to be strong, it may not be quite good enough to get the deal done without further negotiations.

Early Morning Talk

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

via Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

A Panthers source said at 9 a.m. ET it was “too early to tell” whether Bouwmeester (UFA July 1) would be moved. In other words, they’re still waiting for the best offers.

Tough call for Panthers GM Jacques Martin.

On Long Island, GM Garth Snow is giving one last try to complete a Bill Guerin trade that he’s been working on since Saturday. A source close to the situation said if the deal doesn’t go through soon today, Snow will move on to a Plan B.

In Chicago, the Blackhawks are close to acquiring a forward, ESPN.com’s Scott Burnside tells us.

added 9:15am, Don’t forget to check out Spector;s blog throughout the day.  Lyle Richardson provides “common sense” analysis to all the trades being talked about.

added 9:20am, Kevin Allen of USA TODAY has a deadline day blog going which will be updated all day long.

Morning Line

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

“We just made it 5 to 2, and we’re jumping on each other like we just won an overtime game. I’m sure if I were on the Carolina bench I’d be going, ‘Look at these idiots.’”

-Caps coach Bruce Boudreau after the Caps lost to the Hurricanes 5-2.  Watch a post game video at On Frozen Blog.

KK- Open Post

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

Here we sit, waiting for the trades to begin.

Will it be a slow day, maybe fewer trades then what you expect?  Will a name that comes out of nowhere be moved?

What is on your mind or have you heard any rumors you wish to share?

Feel free to comment below.

added 8:49am, Jay Onrait of TSN always does a great trade deadline day blog and he started a little after 8:00am this morning.  Make sure to check it out throughout the day.

Deadline Day Tomfoolery

Blog: Abel to Yzerman By IwoCPO

NoteOkie Jeff’s Game Day Thread will appear on A2Y at 1700 so all you trade deadline junkies can get your fix before then.

This has the potential to be a Cory Cross kinda day.  Just throwing that out there.  There’s a strong possibility that Keith Tkachuk’s treadmill will see more activity today than the cap geniuses in the Wing organ-I-zation.  I just don’t see anything happening.

The Avery Treatment

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

“This was a hard-core 14-day treatment conducted in a lockdown environment in which Sean was grouped with patients who were experiencing serious addiction problems,” said the source, who spoke on the condition of remaining anonymous.

“Sean worked on a technique called, ‘mindfulness,’ which is a type of meditation exercise that gives an individual a type of checklist in his mind that allows him time to consider what he is going to say before he actually says it.

“It’s like installing a switch that slows things down.”

Since completing the two-week program after entering Stage 1 of the NHL/NHLPA behavioral health program, Avery has continued to receive counseling, with regularly scheduled sessions with a personal therapist in New York. These sessions will continue for an indefinite period, perhaps for the remainder of Avery’s career, if not life.

Pronger Off The Market

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

via Mike Brophy of Sportsnet,

Anaheim Ducks GM Bob Murray informed Chris Pronger and his agent Pat Morris his intention is not to move the all-star defenceman at the deadline, according to Sportsnet sources.

With the uncertainty over whether Scott Niedermayer will retire after this season, it’s believed Murray will hold off making further decisions on Pronger until the draft in Montreal in June.

Good Morning On Trade Day

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Kevin McGran and Mark Zwolinski of the Toronto Star,

Coffee brewed, scouting charts laid out, and lists of wants and needs neatly organized, the general managers of the NHL’s 30 teams will meet in boardrooms across North America this morning prior to the trade deadline….

If things begin as normal, the morning will go slowly from a public perspective: Perhaps a few fourth liners, or fifth defender for some low-round picks as selling GMs try to talk up the price to the buyers. Behind the scenes, organizations quickly descend into chaos.

All Nerves, All Day

Blog: KK Hockey By IwoCPO

Who said it? Someone in the East.

“There are always people who are a little nervous. Maybe their heads aren’t into skating. They really want to know what’s going on or if there are any rumors about themselves.

“It’s a tough day. You try to stay with your cell phones and check what’s going on. There’s nothing else you can do.”

Nashville Rising

Blog: KK Hockey By IwoCPO

Via the Daily Tennessean,

“We talked about staying persistent and good things will happen,’’ Predators Coach Barry Trotz said. “You can only go up the ladder one rung at a time, and Edmonton was the rung tonight that we had to get to.’‘

The Preds will get another chance to reel in a rival Thursday, when they take on sixth place Columbus, which has two more points than Nashville.
