Rob Blake Should Be Suspended

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,

Blake’s cross-check/punch to the face of TJ Galiardi in overtime of tonight’s 6-5 Sharks win was a dirty cheap shot, and worthy of a suspension. Blake absolutely should be suspended by the NHL for that hit. Will that happen?
Probably not. Because, Galiardi emerged apparently uninjured on the hit – although because it was one to the head, the effects of injury may not show up right away. As far as I could tell, Galiardi was OK after the game, so the NHL front office might just let it slide because the victim of a dirty hit didn’t need a stretcher to leave the ice.

That doesn’t excuse any of it. I know the Avs were hot after the game over the UNPENALIZED hit by Blake.

read on and you can decide if Blake should be suspended by watching the hit…

Anyone Can Win The Cup

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch,

The usual rash of hard-hitting, nail-biting, overtime games has been imbued with a new dynamic: The tournament lacks a beast. The Cup is utterly up for grabs.

“It’s wide open,” said Daryl “Razor” Reaugh, analyst on Dallas Stars telecasts. Reaugh is working the Detroit-Phoenix series - and he’ll be joining the Los Angeles-Vancouver series - for Versus.

“It’s (NHL commissioner) Gary Bettman’s dream,” Reaugh said. “(He) wants everyone to get a chance, and here we are. You think the biggest mismatches are probably in the East, but then Montreal goes in and nips the Caps.

“Every team is refreshed, and there are so many variables - injuries, confidence, new heroes emerging. What can I say? I don’t see Pittsburgh repeating, and I don’t see Ottawa winning the Cup. Other than that “

Franzen Can Thank Modern Medicine

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

It used to be that, even with the surgical progress they made, a player needed time - sometimes a year’s worth - in order to get his legs under him again. Franzen, doing skating drills by himself long after most of the Red Wings’ regulars had left the ice the other day, was digging in this way and that way and showing no signs of any lingering after-effects.

This, of course, represents astoundingly good news for the Red Wings, his NHL employers. In each of the past two seasons, as Detroit advanced twice to the Stanley Cup final, Franzen has been their most consistent sniper, with 25 goals in 39 playoff games.

That he is back here, playing, with the Red Wings down a game to the Phoenix Coyotes in their Western Conference quarter-final playoff series is one of the reasons Detroit is favoured to win by so many.

It really is a comeback for the ages. “It used to be a season-long injury, then it became a six-month injury and now it’s a three-to-four month injury,” said Holland.

Crosby With The Save

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Craig Custance of The Sporting News,

Crosby had a decision to make. Should he risk a collision with Fleury and try to make the save? And if so, does he slap it away with his forehand or poke it with his backhand?...

“It’s a split second, but 8,000 things go through your mind,” Crosby said. “It was one of those delicate things you’re watching, not sure what to do.”

Crosby might not have been sure, but Fleury was. When Fleury saw the puck trickling past him, he was hopeless.

“I knew I couldn’t get there,” Fleury said.

So Crosby did.

Turco Wants To Be On A Winning Team

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,

He declined interview requests for a couple of days after Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk announced Tuesday that the veteran goalie would not return to the team next season. However, as he lined up realtors Friday to sell his house, Turco said he was ready to turn the page.

“It was hard and it is hard, but they are moving on and I have to move on,” Turco said. “I haven’t been happy for a little while, and I believe I’m a pretty happy person, so it’s time to find a way to be happy again.”

After his four-year contract with the Stars expires on June 30, Turco will be able to shop himself around the NHL as an unrestricted free agent. He got a late start in the pro game after four years in college and two more in the minors, so this is
Turco’s first look at free agency. He said his criteria is simple.

“I want to win,” he said. “I want to find a team that is ready to win, an organization that is building to win now, and an organization that believes I can be a big part of that winning. That’s the most important thing to me.”

I’m on the train to Gabe’s for the first game of a West Coast A2Y meet-up.  That, in itself, should ensure us victory.
