The Next Offensive Dman

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from John McGourty of NHL.com,

Here’s a scary thought: How would you like to be seen as Nicklas Lidstrom’s eventual replacement?
Fortunately for one possible Detroit Red Wings heir apparent, he knows there’s no replacing the four-time Norris Trophy winner.
Brett Lebda, 25, is being groomed in the offensive-defenseman role with the Red Wings while learning from Detroit veterans Lidstrom, Mathieu Schneider, Chris Chelios and Danny Markov.

Talking Washington

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Capitals Insider,

If you read my game story in this morning’s Post, you already know that the leading candidates to be dealt are pending unrestricted free agents Dainius Zubrus, Richard Zednik and Jamie Heward. Zubrus and Zednik have discussed signing extensions with the Caps, but as of late yesterday, neither was close to doing so, fueling speculation that both may have played their final game in Washington. In fact, I was told that the Caps haven’t even spoken to Zubrus’s agent for “a few days.”
That leaves precious little time to hammer out a deal to keep Zubrus. Even Zubrus said “it’s a good possibility” that yesterday’s 3-2 loss to the Devils was his last game as a member of the Caps

The Latest On Guerin

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

Bob McKenzie was just on NHL Live and mentioned Detroit, Atlanta and Ottawa, along with the Sharks being in the running for Guerin.  He would not be surprised to see a deal done today.

Waiting On Ryan

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

TSN reports Ryan Smyth’s agent will be meeting with the Oilers today to discuss his contract.
Are teams holding off on trades to see where these negotiations go?
I would say yes they are but I can’t see the Oilers losing the face of their organization, just like Doan with the Yotes…

Florida Will Be Active

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

But right now, Ottawa seems to be ahead of Toronto on the Roberts front.
I believe there’s an excellent chance Todd Bertuzzi will be traded before the deadline even though he isn’t playing right now. There are offers on the table right now, and the Panthers just have to decide if one is acceptable.

a little more from Bob including what do the Canadiens do…

For Sale- Berard

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

via TSN,

The Columbus Blue Jackets sent out a fax on Sunday night to all NHL teams indicating that defenceman Bryan Berard has requested a trade.
It is believed Berard, who will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, could be obtained for mid-round draft choice.

Bonding Hit

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Buffalo News,

The fractured Sabres might someday look back and view the two difficult games against the Senators as the time they truly came together. Buffalo has been a tight-knit team for the past two seasons, but there was a sense the organization grew stronger during the Battle Royale with Ottawa.
“If you asked a lot of us, me included, I didn’t think our team could get much closer,” Drury said. “We definitely got a lot closer, and our organization got closer. Half the lineup has been in Rochester all year. On the plus-side, the very positive thing, was that we did get closer.”

Burke Talks Deadline Philosophy

Blog: KK Hockey By George Malik

from the Orange County Register:

“I realize that we’re a day and half from the trading deadline, so you’ll hear all these bold proclamations from GMs who didn’t add much saying, ‘I believe in my team.’ But I’ve been saying that for three weeks,” Burke said.
“We’ve never viewed this as an opportunity to make major changes on our team. We viewed this as an opportunity to add, and we still hope to.”
But Burke insists he will not make a major deal just to say he did.
“There’s always between eight and 10 teams trying to load up before the trading deadline, and there’s always another five to six teams trying to load up to get in,” he said. “You’ve got to be cautious. More teams overpay at the deadline than make sensible deals.
“I can say we’ve been in on every deal, we’ve been aware of every deal. We know what the price tag is. Then if we pass, and we get outbid, fine.”

Strike 3 For Holland?

Blog: Abel to Yzerman By IwoCPO

He lies to the deep diggers, talks on tiny high-tech cell phones and it would appear that he uses a liberal amount of goop in his hair.  All these factors point to this: Kenny Holland’s a secretive, sneaky kid.

And I happen to have a hunch that our boy Kenny has something up his sleeve.  What?  I don’t know.  I’m still recovering from being compared to Jiri Hudler yesterday, so my head is kind of reeling.  But, something’s nagging at me.
