Bodychecking At An Early Age

Virtually no one disputes that playing hockey with body checking increases the chance of a player being hurt. What continues to be hotly debated is at what levels of play, and at what age, minor players should be allowed to play with full contact. A study in the Nov. 2 journal of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise concludes that if players are going to learn to bodycheck, then sooner is better. And that contradicts much-publicized earlier research by sports and medical organizations, which has fairly consistently concluded that players should not begin body checking at a young age.

More On The INHD Conflict with The NBA

Yesterday I mentioned INHD would be delaying some HD broadcasts of NHL games due to an NBA scheduling conflict. Today, Rob, a frequent reader of KK sent me the dates that the NHL games will be delayed. Dec 12-Pittsburgh at Detroit (NBA-Minn at Detroit) Jan 2-TB at Isles (NBA-Phoenix at Knicks) Feb 6-TB at Isles (NBA-Minnesota at Phoenix) March 6 Isles at Washington (NBA-Memphis at Denver) March 20 Boston at Rangers (NBA-Lakers at Boston) April 11 Pittsburgh at Philadelphia (NBA-Seattle at San Antonio) April 17 Dallas at Detroit (NBA-Cleveland at Boston) There is also OLN-HD (INHD) and NBA TV on Jan 30 but it shouldn't be a problem because the OLN Phil at Rangers is at 7:00 and the NBA Portland at Seattle is at 10:00 so it should be a INHD doubleheader.

A Season Of Loss

A new book, entitled A Season of Loss, A Lifetime of Forgiveness by John Manasoo looks at the crash and its aftermath and finds that the Snyders looked to their Mennonite beliefs to not only cope with the death of their son, but to also reach out to Heatley. "I grew up in the Mennonite Chuch...I struggle with the word religion sometimes," Dan's father Graham Snyder told Canada AM. "I'm not a church-going person for the most part, but a lot of the values that I learned came from there, and as John (Manasoo) talks about in the book a little bit, some of the main tenets of that faith are forgiveness and passivism...I just believe that it felt like something that we've always strongly believed in, is treating others as you would like to be treated, and so I think we used that as a basis for how we reacted."

Colorado Top Line Needs To Score More

It was the type of session common between a coach and young players - with one noteworthy twist. Joe Sakic, Alex Tanguay and Milan Hejduk do not qualify as young players. Quenneville held a 10-minute motivational/instructional session with his top line Thursday in an attempt to spark a trio that would be the first to admit it has underachieved during the first 18 games of the season. "It's obvious. As a line, we've got to be better. We haven't been good enough and consistent enough," said Sakic, the straight-talking captain. "We're getting a goal here or there, but it's not enough for our line. We've got to be better than that."

Consistent Diving Calls

Now, with fines starting to be handed out, someone could make a good living off the financial penalties being handed out for diving in hockey games. In what has become a performance art of sorts, players all over the NHL - and every team has at least one - are doing their best Greg Louganis impersonations. Problem is, the league is inconsistent. For example, wunderkind Sidney Crosby must have seen an oasis on the Wachovia Center ice Wednesday, for he dove at least three times. He was whistled for it once, and started mouthing off to the refs. Did he get the letter in the mail saying, "You've been a bad boy Sidney?" Don't know. They're kept secret. But will Sid the Kid, the poster boy for the new NHL, see a financial fine? Doubtful.

Robitaille Near Return

Luc Robitaille, good natured as always, laughs at the jokes from teammates and coaches. Robitaille can't possibly get any slower, they say, so he might as well play with a fractured bone in his leg. That's exactly what Robitaille intends to do soon. Robitaille, who has missed eight consecutive games, participated in practice Thursday morning for the first time and could return within a matter of days.

Bruins Tired Of 3rd Period Collapse

Wings Lose Three While On Canadian Road Trip

With eight of their 15 wins coming against Chicago, Columbus and sad-sack St. Louis, the Detroit Red Wings had been accused of padding their record against the dregs of the NHL, all of which conveniently reside in their division. It seemed like nit-picking at first, but after an 0-for-3 trip through the Northwest that began with losses in Vancouver and Calgary and culminated with a 6-5 defeat to the Oilers, there might be some validity to the charges. "It's (a road trip) we'd like to forget, simply put,'' said defenceman Mathieu Schneider. "We played well in spurts, but that's not good enough to win in this league, especially when you're playing teams as good as the ones we played over the last three games here.

Get A Piece Of Gretzky

Wayne Gretzky used to make $25,000 a month playing hockey for the Edmonton Oilers. Come next month, the contract he signed his name to could be worth as much as $25,000 (remaining figures U.S. unless noted). Gretzky's first contract with the Oilers -- the 10-year deal he signed on Jan. 26, 1979, his 18th birthday -- is up for bidding on Lelands.com, the New York-based sports auction service that handled the sale of the Mickey Mantle and Jackie Robinson collections.

St. Louis Returns

Tampa Bay Lightning right wing Martin St. Louis was back in the lineup for Thursday night's game against the New York Islanders less than a week after fracturing a bone near the tip of his left ring finger. It was first thought St. Louis, who sat out two games, would miss two to four weeks. The 2004 NHL MVP also damaged his nail bed after being hit in the hand by defenseman Darryl Sydor's shot in practice last Sunday.
