Theodore May Stay With Avs

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Denver Post,

Avalanche general manager Francois Giguere sounds like a man who has decided to bring back high-priced, disappointing goalie Jose Theodore for another season.
“My message to people is, ‘Don’t think that buying him out is going to be a big financial advantage for us.’ It won’t be,” Giguere said Wednesday. “If you buy him out, two-thirds of his salary counts toward the (salary) cap, and we’d still have to sign a replacement for him.”
That said, Giguere said a decision whether to bring back Theodore for the last year of a contract that will pay him $6 million has yet to be finalized.

Sabres Respond

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News,

Drury issued a challenge to his teammates going into Game Four. He said they had two choices: The Buffalo Sabres could curl and cry their way home or they could come back fighting like dogs. He was speaking in his usual hushed tones, but you better believe it came across loud and clear to his teammates.
Stop moaning and quit feeling sorry for yourselves. Show a little resiliency and maybe, just maybe, they could get things turned around before it was too late. Maybe they could strike fear into the Ottawa Senators. Maybe they could do what seemed impossible and win four straight. Maybe there was a little hope after all. “It was the whole locker room, not
just me,” Drury said. “Everybody understood what we were up against. It relaxed us. At some point, I don’t know when it was, but some weight was lifted off our shoulders. It was as loose as we had been in a while.”

Ducks Need To Show Up

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Terry Jones of the Edmonton Sun,

Losing Pronger for a game is one thing. Having everybody else not show up, again, would be something else again.
Yesterday was all about Pronger. But today has to be all about the Ducks who so spectacularly no-showed in losing 5-0 to the Detroit Red Wings in Game 3.
Ducks GM Brian Burke was screaming injustice, of course. Burke enjoys nothing more in life than to be outraged. And he talks such a good game, he can almost pull you in with him. But the last thing Carlyle needs here is for the Ducks to go on the ice tonight using not having Pronger as an excuse.

Where’s Teemu?

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Mark Whicker of the OC Register,

Suddenly it’s not the playoffs for Teemu Selanne.
Nobody is clipping him in the face. Nobody is nailing him with a puck during warm-ups. Nobody is driving him to the dentist.
Nothing’s going in.
“When I’ve gotten into position, I haven’t gotten the puck onto the net,” Selanne said. “It’s playoff hockey. I’ve been through things like this before. All that needs to happen is for one of those shots to go in.
“I could either be smiling or crying about this. I’d rather be smiling.”

If The Sabres Can Win Again

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,

This doesn’t make it a series.
But one more win by the Buffalo Sabres in this Eastern Conference final and, my oh my, the ghosts of blown playoff opportunities past will mischievously start whispering in the ears of the Ottawa Senators.
Suddenly, there will be a Patrick Lalime sighting. Or Jeff Friesen will be seen taking a tour on Parliament Hill.

Delay The Party

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

“We missed out on the party,” said Senators coach Bryan Murray. “It’s disappointing when you lose, especially at home.”...
“We knew there was going to be a bump in the road at some point or another,” said Senators centre Jason Spezza. “We’ve just got to stick with the plan.
“We’ve shown that anytime we play our game and get pucks in deep, we’re the better hockey team. We had a lot of chances late in the second and the third. We just weren’t able to get anything by (Sabres goalie Ryan Miller). That was just a good teaching game to show what we have to do to win.”

He Sees In The Future

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from The Maven,

No bragging is permitted at The Maven’s Café Discreet but I must remind you that I did suggest yesterday that the Sabres could win on Wednesday night and, if so, this could turn out to be a better series than the first three games suggested….
Starting today, The Maven will diligently reply to E mails.

Waiting For 4

Blog: Abel to Yzerman By IwoCPO

Another long day.  I’m officially declaring the Stress Train off limits until, oh, let’s go with 2045.  This should be a day of anticipation, not dread.  Think optimistically and how positive a 3-1 lead in Detroit would be for you and your families.

Am I “predicting” victory tonite?  Well, I’m not coming right out and saying it because we’ve all seen situations where teams lose their best players and rally around his absence.  So, no, I’m not guaranteeing a Wing victory.  I’m sticking with the same prediction I’ve had for this and every series so far: Detroit in 6.

I do, however, have a fun little game for us to pass the time.  As entertaining as “Name That Idiot”?  Maybe not.  But still nifty.
