Burrows Accused Of On-Ice Incident

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from TSN,

Vancouver Canucks forward Alex Burrows could be facing charges for an on-ice incident in a Montreal summer league game.

According to a report on RDS.ca, an investigation is underway in response to a complaint filed on July 21 that states Burrows violently struck the face of a goaltender with his stick during a game at the Excellent Ice Arena in Kirkland, Que.

The report said the family of the goaltender, 19-year old Koray Celik, would not comment about the incident on the advice of lawyers.

Recchi Continues To Help Bruins

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from John McGourty of NHL.com,

Perhaps the biggest contribution Recchi made last season was helping Bergeron rediscover his skills. Bergeron, who suffered a serious head injury in 2007 and another lesser concussion in December 2008, looked like his old self when teamed with Recchi.

If Bergeron returns to the form that saw him score 70 points in two straight seasons from 2005-07, it would have an effect similar to signing one of the top available free agents this summer. Recchi thinks it can happen.

“You can see Bergeron is regaining his confidence,” Recchi said. “When you go through what he’s been through the past 1 1/2 or two years, it’s not easy. But I think he’s back to being the player everybody has seen in the past. He’s holding onto the puck and playing with strength. He’s a great two-way player.

“It’s fun to see him getting back to health and it’s fun to play with him. I’m just trying to support Chuck and Patrice by going to the areas that they need me to go.”

Maybe Hamilton Should Find A New Dance Partner

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Jeff Blair of the Globe and Mail,

As much fun as it is watching Gary Bettman squirm - comfort the afflicted, afflict the comfortable, you understand - I’m getting the impression it’s almost time Jim Balsillie gets new legal advice or, at least, a new hobby.

After NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly sent the Hamilton Spectator an e-mail message saying: “This is all about Jim. At some point Jim has to look in the mirror and start taking responsibility for his actions. Hamilton is a great hockey town with passionate hockey fans. But it may be time for the city to come to the realization that it married the wrong spouse.”

Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger told the paper he would have some advice for the Blackberry Baron. “One is not going to be successful if you continue down the same path that has not succeeded in the past,” Eisenberger said.

Red Wings Hook-Up With The Walleye

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Mark Monroe of the Toledo Blade,

A logjam of quality young goaltenders in the Detroit Red Wings minor league system all but guarantees the Toledo Walleye will have a gifted goalie in its inaugural season.

The Walleye will officially announce an affiliation agreement with the NHL’s elite franchise at a press conference Monday. The contract extends a longtime relationship the Red Wings have had with Toledo minor league teams.

It Doesn’t Make Sense

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Mike Boone of Habs Inside/Out,

All kinds of chirping in the blogosphere about a three-way – kinky! – involving the Canadiens, Senators and Sharks.

It all began with a Bruce Garrioch item in the Ottawa Sun saying San Jose was interested in Dany Heatley but a deal would have to include a third party, likely the Canadiens.

Let the guessing games begin. The most fanciful speculation didn’t even include Marleau: Heatley to SJ, the Sharks’ first-round draft choice and – wait for it – Mike Cammalleri to Ottawa, Jonathan Cheechoo and Christian Ehrhoff to Montreal.

Like Bob Gainey is going to trade Cammalleri, the free agent he signed on the day he let Alex Kovalev walk, to Kovy’s new team, which happens to be a divisional rival.

People, get a grip!

Worst Corsi Rates

Blog: The Puck Stops Here By PuckStopsHere

This summer in my look at sabermetrics and hockey, I have been looking at the Corsi Number.  They are a good judge of puck possession that is much like +/-, although it comes with different strengths and different weaknesses.

I have ranked the best 20 and worst 20 player adjusted Corsi Numbers.  This ranking is done treating Corsi as a counting stat accumulated over the season.  It can also be looked at as a rate stat and ranked per minute of 5 on 5 ice time played.  To that effect, I have listed the top 20 Corsi rates from 2008/09.  Today, I look at the worst 20.

Bertuzzii Could Be A Good Choice For A Few Teams

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Brian Costello of The Hockey News,

There are many players still on the market and unfortunately a good chunk of them will never again play in the NHL. If you consider yourself picky, you might look at the UFA list and say there are only a couple names worth considering.

It all depends on what a team is looking for – from Maxim Afinogenov to Mike Zigomanis, there’s a role for a lot of these guys. One UFA who continues to catch my eye is the enigmatic Todd Bertuzzi.

Say what you want about Big Bert and his past crimes of poor judgment, he can still be a useful player on a handful of teams.

The days of Bertuzzi being a 40-goal scorer and point-a-game player on a top line are long gone. So are the stipends of $5 million plus per season.

Oshie A Hit In St. Louis

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Brad Elliott Schlossman of the Grand Forks Herald,

As he’s done everywhere in his career, T.J. Oshie wasted little time becoming a major fan favorite in St. Louis. His name became a verb, fans campaigned to vote him mayor of nearby O’Fallon, Mo., and he was a landslide winner in fan voting for the most popular player on the team….

“I’ve never had the opportunity to pick a Mario Lemieux, a player who has all the physical attributes and skills to step right into the NHL and dominate a game,” Blues head scout Jarmo Kekalainen told NHL.com. “Rarely, in fact, do you find any kid who is physically ready to step into the NHL and make an impact.

“To me, we’re charged with the opportunity to identify skill, hockey sense, character and intelligence in a youngster and then calculate his future. We try to find players with the upside who can become an impact player. You might get a guy that will make your team right off the bat. But you can’t get carried away with that. If it takes four years to get him to the NHL, but he plays 12 years in the league, I’d much rather take that guy than the guy that makes it in the league the next year, plays 100 games and then vanishes.”
