Entry #4: Our Wandering Miracle of Czech Insanity

Blog: Abel to Yzerman By IwoCPO

Arizona has been heard from.  Aaron, an A2Y reader from Phoenix and varsity Photoshop user, has provided us our fourth entry in the “Replace Fire On Ice Because It’s Juvenile, Hastily Designed and Just Plain Sucks” contest.  A reminder:  whoever the 8 dedicated A2Y readers determine has crafted the best graphic/slogan for the upcoming season will win a fantastic prize and an honor that is almost indescribably unique (their graphic will be prominently displayed on the A2Y front page the entire season).

Aaron’s a smart dude.  He knows what causes us pain and has woven it into his graphic and his slogan.  Nothing causes a family more stress than #39 be-bopping outside his crease.

Gretzky Rooting For Bonds

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

via the AP at MSNBC,

When Bonds homered on Friday, he heard a taped greeting from Michael Jordan. On Saturday, it was hockey night in San Francisco. Bonds turned and watched from left field just before first pitch as the video board played another celebrity greeting.
“Hey Barry, Wayne Gretzky here. On behalf of my wife and kids we want to congratulate you on a job well done, but remember don’t stop there and we’ll be rooting for you as you chase down history.”

The Rats Return

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Sun-Sentinel,

The 1995-96 Panthers team was back on the ice Saturday, and so were the rats that symbolized that group and their magical run to the Stanley Cup Finals.
The announced crowd of 11,817 fans, many of whom waited beforehand in long lines that snaked through the arena’s concourse for autographs and pictures with the players, tossed the rodents with glee onto the ice — the first time they’ve been able to at a game since the league banned it after the 1995-96 season.
“I was amazed at the amount of people in the building and the excitement,” retired winger Dave Lowry said. “It was overwhelming.

At the event, the Panthers also displayed their new uniforms (video).

Do Horton & Roy Compare

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Inside The Panthers,

News that Nathan Horton’s contract was used as a comparable by the Buffalo Sabres in working up a contract proposal for center Derek Roy borders on the amazing. Ultimately, Roy was given the same six-year, $24 million package Horton got.
Let’s see who turns out to have the better career. The betting here is it’s Horton.

Higgins Brings Passion With His Game

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Dave Stubbs at Habs Inside/Out,

Higgins underwent arthroscopic surgery on the shoulder in Colorado in late June, but already is in tremendous condition as he prepares for the season to come. The 24-year-old’s fitness is legendary, and this summer he’s making huge strides to regaining and building on his superior conditioning, working with Jon DiFlorio, his personal trainer at Institute 3E on Long Island.
I had long conversations with Higgins and DiFlorio this week, and heard again the passion and commitment Higgins brings to the game. He sees the season to come as a great opportunity for himself, and other young members of the club, to step up and take a leadership role. If his dedication to his fitness is any indication, he’ll live up to his end of the bargain.

Lou- The Baseball Man

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Standard-Times,

Lou Lamoriello, who turned the New Jersey Devils into three-time Stanley Cup champions (1995, 2000, 2003), managed the Upper Cape all-stars in 1965, the first time the Cape League All-Star Game was held in Wareham….
“They were great years. Where else could you go play baseball, work for the town — we all had to work, even managing I worked,” he said. “Some were town jobs, some were laboring jobs.”
Born and raised in Providence, Lamoriello went to Providence College at the age of 16 and played in the Cape League for Orleans after his freshman, sophomore and junior years.

Sorry Brian

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Terry Jones of the Edmonton Sun,

So is Burke right on the money, so to speak? Or is he getting his pound of flesh?
Gutless? Classless?
On a personal level, absolutely. On a professional level, all’s fair in love and war.
Grossly inflated salary?
The Oilers aren’t likely to be competitive if they don’t solve their scoring problems with goal scorers. And if Penner continues to improve, it might be fair value at some point. But today? No way.
Act of desperation?
An act of desperation by a general manager fighting to keep his job?
Sorry, Brian.
