Good Hits, Bad Fights

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

I am often told that we must be very careful we don’t “take hitting out of the game.”

I am not sure that’s possible. It’s hockey, after all. Hitting is such an intrinsic part of it that I can’t imagine there’s a rule change or interpretation that would “take hitting out of the game.”

But if the goal is to make sure hitting stays in the game, can someone explain to me, please, the curious case of Boston defenceman Mark Stuart.

On Saturday against the Los Angeles Kings, Stuart delivered a well-timed, open-ice hit on Los Angeles King star Anze Kopitar. It was a clean but crushing blow.

continued and watch the Stuart hit below…

Calgary In Panic Mode

Blog: The Puck Stops Here By PuckStopsHere

The Calgary Flames seemed poised for a good season this year.  They barely missed out on the Northwest Division championship last year, largely due to not dressing a full roster in the stretch drive due to salary cap problems.  This year looked like they could do even better.  Miikka Kiprusoff looked ready to improve his numbers and get closer to the Vezina Trophy level he had played at in the past.  Jay Bouwmeester was added to an already talented defence including Dion Phaneuf and Robyn Regehr, to give Calgary a defence that could be the league’s best.  Jarome Iginla gave the team a strong scoring threat and players like Olli Jokinen and Daymond Langkow offered some depth.  This was a team that appeared to be in contention.

For the first couple months of the season, that prediction appeared to be roughly on the mark and then a very rough stretch hit in January.  Calgary has lost ten of their last eleven games.  Their only win came against bottom feeding Edmonton, who had not won at all in 2010 so far until last night.  If the season ended right now, Calgary would be dropped out of the playoffs as they sit in ninth in the West Conference.

Columbus May Be Planning To Move Torres

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch,

One month and one day from the NHL trade deadline, all signs point to Blue Jackets left winger Raffi Torres being traded to a playoff contender in exchange for draft picks or prospects.

As of yesterday, the Blue Jackets and Torres’ agent, Eustace King, had not discussed, even preliminarily, a contract extension that would prevent Torres from becoming an unrestricted free agent July 1….

The Blue Jackets, who play the Colorado Avalanche at 9 tonight in the Pepsi Center, would like to keep Torres, too, but money likely will be an issue.

Another Battle Of Ontario

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Chris Young of Toronto Star,

Dion Phaneuf’s arrival as the newest Maple Leaf in town means it won’t be long before main squeeze Elisha Cuthbert shows up at the Air Canada Centre, a place that hasn’t seen a power couple like this since Vince Carter and his mom left town.

The 24-year-old Phaneuf, acquired from Calgary on Sunday, and Cuthbert, the 27-year-old Calgary native best known for her role in the TV drama 24, have been an item for nearly two years.

They will have to do some hard training, though, to catch up with the power play going on in Ottawa. Singer Carrie Underwood and her Senators centreman Mike Fisher are coming off their cute-and-cuter Grammy Awards appearance Sunday night as they move toward a planned wedding that will be the most sought-after invitation in the game this summer.

Would The Avalanche Trade For An Injured Souray?

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

via Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,

Do I think the Avs are trying to trade Liles right now? Yes, absolutely. Nobody will go on the record saying that, but a couple conversations around the league I’ve had about his situation lead me to believe the answer is yes. Do I know where he might go? No, not at the moment.

The trade I advocated the other day (Liles and maybe a pick to Edmonton for Sheldon Souray) would appear to be dead in the water now, with Souray out indefinitely with a broken hand. But does it have to be? The fact is, Souray probably would be OK to play by early March or so, give or take a few, and his acquisition would be for a late-season run and, if all goes well, two more years after that.

So, theoretically anyway, such a deal still could happen.

Do Blackhawks Want Jay McKee?

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

via Tim Sassone of Between The Circles,

Are the Blackhawks stepping up their efforts to acquire a defenseman for the stretch run?

There were plenty of rumors Monday pointing in that direction.

There were eyebrows raised in Pittsburgh on Monday night when defenseman Jay McKee was a healthy scratch against Buffalo. Could McKee be headed to the Hawks?

Wilson Failing In Toronto

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,

All season long, Brian Burke has remained steadfast in his support of head coach Ron Wilson – and that’s a good thing.

Few coaches have a fair shot at success – or survival – without the explicit backing of their GM.

Still, some have suggested repeatedly, and snidely, that only Wilson’s position as head coach of the U.S Olympic team, with Burke also his boss there, has protected him from dismissal.

The implied accusation is that Burke is putting the welfare of the American team ahead of the needs of the Leafs.

It certainly has created a peculiar dynamic and Wilson’s overt praise of various U.S. Olympians in recent days has made it even more uncomfortable as the fortunes of the Leafs have plummeted.

Flames Panic

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

In all, the Flames will have turned over a third of their roster in the past 48 hours, a move that smacks of panic.

Jokinen and Prust both played in the loss to the Flyers, an odd gamble considering that if either had been injured, it would have likely scuttled the transaction.

“You’ve got to play hard every time you go on the ice, no matter what distractions you have,” Jokinen said. “You play for that sweater, that logo in front of you, until they tell you you’re no longer part of the team.

“I just got the news, I’m not part of the team any more, so I’ve got to turn the page and move on. Obviously, 11 months ago when I got traded over here, I was very excited. I was hoping I could stay here for the rest of my career. But it’s a cruel business and that’s the way it goes. It comes with the salary. If you make $5-million, 11 goals is not going to cut it, so ….

“It’s definitely a slap in the face to get traded.”
