Evening Line

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the CP via TSN,

While the Detroit Red Wings are runaway leaders in the overall standings, they won’t necessarily represent the West in the championship series, says Clarke.

“Obviously, (GM Ken) Holland has the right people to get players for them, and (Mike) Babcock does a great job coaching,” says Clarke. “They’ve got a highly-skilled team and they have some physical players.

“They’re a tough team, Detroit, but a lot of the games they’re winning are by one goal. They’re good, but it doesn’t mean they’re like the old Oilers used to be. They could beat you by six or seven. Detroit’s really good but I don’t think anybody would concede they’re going to win the Cup.”

Confident Owner

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Ottawa Citizen,

If fans of the Ottawa Senators are worried about their favourite team, owner Eugene Melnyk isn’t.

In fact, he’s boldly predicting that the team’s season is not going to end until mid-June, with another shot at the Stanley Cup.

“Don’t get the BBQ out till mid June,” he said in an e-mail Wednesday. “It is going to be a great run. Mark that.”

The Growth Of Homer

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Windsor Star,

Almost immediately, coach Scotty Bowman recognized what Holmstrom’s ticket to success in the league was going to be.

“When I got over here Scotty told me never to leave the front of the net,” said Holmstrom, who has 20 goals and 36 points in 44 games. “He said. ‘Don’t even go into the corner, just stay in front.’

“I don’t mind it (playing in front); sooner or later the puck is going to come to the front of the net because that’s where everything happens.”

Just One Regret

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

From Neil Stevens at the CP via Yahoo!,

Living in the Detroit region doesn’t mean he buys into the Red Wings’ marketing slogans.

“My whole life I’ve tried to explain to people in America ... being in Detroit, it’s Hockeytown, so they say,” he said. “I call it Red Wings Town. Canada is Hockeytown, there’s no doubt about it. The fabric of the sport is Canadian for sure.”

Media attention paid to the Leafs “seems a lot more magnified now” than in his day. That could be explained by the proliferation of all-sports TV and radio stations since his playing days.  He has only one regret.

“There’s nothing like it,” he said of playing in the NHL. “I had great personal accolades and individual accomplishments. I won championships at every level. The only thing I didn’t win was a Stanley Cup. There isn’t a day that goes by ... that’s the one thing I always think about.”

Stastny Close to Returning for the Avs

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

From Rick Sadowski at the Rocky Mountain News,

Avalanche center Paul Stastny practiced for the second day in a row this morning and said he felt fine, but he won’t play tonight against the San Jose Sharks at the HP Pavilion.

But Stastny, who underwent an appendectomy Jan. 17, is optimistic about returning to the lineup for Saturday’s game in Vancouver against the Canucks.

“Hopefully, after I skate for two more days, I’ll be ready Saturday,” he said. “It doesn’t feel any different, to tell you the truth. It feels good. Everything is good. I don’t feel any different than I did before I had the surgery.”

A New Chicago Ambassador

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Chicago Blackhawks,

Former Chicago Blackhawks goaltender and Hockey Hall of Fame member Tony Esposito has joined the Chicago Blackhawks family as an official Blackhawks Ambassador. Esposito will join Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita in representing the Chicago Blackhawks at events at the United Center and throughout the Chicagoland area.

“It is a great honor to be asked back into the Blackhawks family,” said Esposito. “In my heart, I have always been and always will be a Blackhawk. I want to thank Rocky Wirtz and John McDonough for giving me the opportunity to come back to the Blackhawks organization. I love the new approach the team is taking. Everything about the Blackhawks is very upbeat and I am proud to be a part of this new beginning.”

Ducks in the House

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

White House Press Release:

[PRESIDENT BUSH]: Welcome to the White House. We’re glad you’re here. Like, have you noticed a lot of security around here? It’s because the Vice President heard there were some Ducks around. (Laughter and applause.)

These Ducks are awfully mighty. It’s such an honor to welcome you. I love welcoming champs to the White House. And these are clearly great champs. You know, the playoffs have got to be tough at that time of year, after you’ve played so long, and your legs are a little tired—except you romped through the playoffs. I don’t know if many Americans understand that, but this team went 16-5 through the first four rounds; became the first West Coast team in the NHL to win the Stanley Cup. And that’s a big deal.

Hockey Doesn’t Need a Tiger Woods

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

From Black Athlete Sports Network,

Why does color have to be an issue here in the USA, but really not in Canada?

Hockey doesn’t need “another Tiger Woods”.  They had them while Tiger was down here at Stanford hanging out with his Cali surfing buddies.

And don’t give me that economics thing. There are just as many piss poor Canadians as there are Americans.

Just face it. Until we get out of the mentality that there are only certain sports we’re suppose to play, you won’t see that many Black Americans playing hockey.

Right Advantage

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Adam Schwartz of NHL.com,

Here is a hockey fact you might not have thought about. Only seven NHL goalies catch with their right hand.

To Tomas Vokoun, one of the lefties, the difference gives him an edge, a slight one to be sure, but an edge nonetheless. And we all know how goalies love those advantages, however small.

“It’s a little bit easier for me to stop left-handed shots and most of the players in the NHL have left-handed shots,” said Vokoun, the Florida Panthers’ top goalie. “Although, I don’t think it’s a significant advantage. I don’t think a goalie that catches with his right hand has a significant advantage.”
