Burrows Take A Shot To The Throat

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province,

First reports from the medical room indicated Burrows was hit in the trachea area. There was no need for him to be taken immediately to hospital. Not long after the shot, he was upright and breathing fine. The concern was with the swelling. In 2007, when Roberto Luongo was hit in the throat in Montreal, the swelling forced him to spend a night in hospital.

Flyers Hope To Try Another Goalie

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Frank Seravalli of Frequent Flyers,

The Flyers have signed goaltender Sebastien Caron from the Swiss Elite League in Europe, general manager Paul Holmgren confirmed to the Daily News last night.

Holmgren said Caron has arrived in the United States and if he clears waivers today at noon, he will join the team for the final five regular-season games. His contract is a pro-rated $500,000 for the remainder of this year, which would pay him about $25,906 for the last 10 days.

Since he signed after the March 3 trade deadline, he won’t be eligible for the playoffs.

Questioning Jacques Martin Words On Price

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Dave Stubbs of Habs Inside/Out,

(Carey) Price earned third star vs. Carolina but was booed by some in the Bell Centre crowd for it. Yesterday, I asked Canadiens head coach Jacques Martin if he’d been angered or if he otherwise felt strongly about his goalie being heckled. Martin replied: “I respect the fans. They pay good dollars to be entertained and they have a right to an opinion. As a professional athlete, or a coach, you have to work within the framework. Sure I’d like to see better results (for Price), as he would. At the same time, I can’t say we lost the game because of him.”

With this answer, Martin blew a golden opportunity to publicly support his goalie who’s been working hard in practice, trying to get better results, keeping his team in games and yet been victimized by bad luck.

Kings Prepare For The Playoffs

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Mark Whicker of the OC Register,

There will be much written and said about the Kings as playoff newbies but they’re better prepared for this than you think.

Four have won Stanley Cups: Rob Scuderi (Pittsburgh), Justin Williams (Carolina), Fredrik Modin (Tampa Bay) and Sean O’Donnell (Ducks).

In the room there are 488 man-games of postseason experience, including 87 by O’Donnell and 81 by Smyth.

Drew Doughty, Dustin Brown and Jack Johnson haven’t gotten past the vernal equinox in the NHL, but they breathed the pressurized air of the Olympics.

“You’ve got to be on top of the things in the playoffs because there’s no room for error,” Smyth said Thursday morning. “It comes down to whether you can outplay and outwork the guy in front of you. If enough guys do that, you’ll be successful.

“If we get into the playoffs it will be a huge accomplishment. No question that we would have taken this position at the start of the year.”

Two lease proposals for the Phoenix Coyotes given to the Glendale City Council earlier this week were approved, sources told ESPN.com on Thursday.

The “Bear Hug” Proposal

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Darren Dreger of TSN,

Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager Brian Burke is convinced a good hug may go a long way to curbing a constant safety issue in the NHL - hitting from behind.

Burke is lobbying the league to allow what he calls a “bear hug,” where a player, usually a defenseman, is allowed to wrap his arms around the targeted player, for a fleeting moment, while he takes him into the boards.

Burke says this change would avoid the “billiard-ball” force hits that exist now where all of the force is transferred directly from the “hitter” to the “hittee.”

LB: WIN Straight, No More Chasing Bubba

Blog: Abel to Yzerman By VooX

This is it, bitches, the game where order will be restored.  If the Wings WIN tonight, they could overtake Bubba in the standings and the universe will once again be whole.

Since H2H, I’ve been inundated with work and haven’t had much time to post or follow the Wings.  Despite living in my bubble, I know the importance of tonight’s game.  5th place is within striking distance of the Red Wings, and none of Li’l Gary’s faux teams from the expansion era can stop them.

Have you heard the big news out of BJ land?  It is not that the team is in playoff position, because they’re not.  It is not that they have hope for the future, because they don’t.  It’s because just last week they qualified for Bettman’s Bailout Dollars.  Yet another faux hockey city requires clubs like the Red Wings to bail them out of financial devastation.  And while the Michigan economy has sputtered along for a decade, Wings fans keep the Big Red Wing Machine running with the best fan support in the NHL.  So congratulations, Columbus, once again you will get propped up by the few teams whose fans give a crap enough to support them, no matter what the circumstances.  And congratulations, Li’l Gary, your vision of destroying the NHL is coming to fruition as more and more of your expansion teams need Bettman’s Bailout Dollars.  Thanks Gary.  Ass.

Only one thing matters tonight.  WINNING.  For the sweet little baby Jesus, the Wings need to play like they are a team possessed and WIN tonight at the JLA.  And in case you didn’t know already, the Wings ARE possessed.

Evening Line

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

There are GMs who just might see his cap hit ($7.7 million) as a distasteful but simple way to get to the salary cap floor while they sell at least the hope that Lecavalier might decide he does want to again play to his ability. Factor in a buyout over the last four years and it’s a doable deal for certain clubs. Toronto could certainly afford it and that market may well appeal to Lecavalier. The New York Rangers do things like this all the time and never seem to tire of it even when they regularly blow up in GM Glen Sather’s face.

-Jim Kelley at Sports Illustrated.  More on this plus additional hockey talk.
