Leafs Looking At Next Year
01/27/06 at 04:34 PM ET | Comments (0)
from Damien Cox of ESPN,
In the eons since the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs last met in the Stanley Cup finals, there has been a curious relationship to their fortunes. Now, with the postlockout environment dictating some very different challenges for NHL squads on both sides of the Canada-U.S. border, it's intriguing that both Original Six clubs find themselves simultaneously gasping for air in the Eastern Conference standings.read on

Grandpa Johnson
01/27/06 at 02:44 PM ET | Comments (0)
from the Las Vegas Sun,
John Johnson and his companion, longtime Clark County elementary school principal Kathryn Augsburger, saw the Wolverines play at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks in October, and they plan to see them at the University of Nebraska-Omaha next month. For someone who watched both of his sons, Jack Sr. and Jimmy, play at Michigan State, John Johnson said seeing Junior extend the Johnson line has been more thrilling. "We've had a helluva lot of fun with it," Johnson said. "I thought it was exciting when my two sons were playing college hockey, but this is even more exciting, when I know the kid is being watched so closely by scouts. "Pro hockey players, they live a fast life. Those kids, they're not encouraged to lay off the women or beer. So his dad thought another year, at Michigan, would be good for him."more

from Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch,
Your cyber-correspondent worked the room Thursday night at Savvis Center, talking to NHL executives, broadcasters and other media types, former players and a player agent about the state of the Blues. Veterans Doug Weight and Keith Tkachuk love St. Louis and would love to stay with the franchise -– IF it gains a credible owner and IF the Next Regime had a convincing plan to build a winner here. Both realize that contenders will come calling on the Blues before the trade deadline.more

Update On Pat Burns
01/27/06 at 01:48 PM ET | Comments (0)
from the Star-Ledger,
If Pat Burns had been physically able, he would have jumped at the chance to return as Devils coach when Larry Robinson stepped down more than five weeks ago. But Burns, who just finished another round of chemotherapy last week in his fight with liver cancer, said it was never a possibility. "I wasn't ready physically. If I were ready, I would've jumped in. I've missed it," Burns said last night at the St. Pete Times Forum, where he watched the Devils face the Lightning.continued

Theodore A Target
01/27/06 at 11:57 AM ET | Comments (0)
from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
It's a good thing Jose Theodore is a goalie because he needs the extra equipment with all the shots being fired his way. The struggling Canadiens netminder has been the target of the Montreal media and fans, and it doesn't sound like they'll be appeased until he's playing elsewhere. While there has been talk in NHL circles that Habs GM Bob Gainey would like to move Theodore to Vancouver in a deal for Canucks winger Todd Bertuzzi, trading him isn't going to be easy.read on

Refs Need To Focus
01/27/06 at 11:47 AM ET | Comments (0)
from the Morning Call,
When Mike Rathje is asked for his opinion on the new NHL rules, he just smirks. Mostly because the dive Joe Sakic took in overtime on Jan. 14 — the one that led to the penalty that led to Colorado's winning goal — is still fresh in his mind. ''[The referees] don't even know what they're doing out there,'' Rathje, the first-year Flyers defenseman, said last week. ''They could call 20, 30 penalties a game if they wanted to, easily, and they don't. Then all of the sudden they call penalties out of the blue in overtime, and that's a joke.''continued

Expect To Get Hit
01/27/06 at 11:38 AM ET | Comments (0)
from the Journal News,
Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff and several Sabres players have accused Kasparaitis of dirty play and hinted at payback the next time the teams play, March 27 at Madison Square Garden. "They're upset their guy got hurt, I'm not proud of that, I feel bad," Kasparaitis said. "Maybe the problem was he didn't know I was coming. Still, you should expect to get hit. It's a hitting game. The rules have changed but hitting is still in the game. "I'm not going to go into the corner and say, 'Excuse me, I'm going to hit you.' That's not how we play the game."read on
