Swedish Attraction

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Karl Samuelson at NHL.com,

Today, every NHL team has a Swede in its lineup, but one team has eclipsed all others in the successful integration of Swedish hockey players – the Detroit Red Wings.

Five of Detroit’s top 10 scorers last season were Swedes, and this season seven of their regulars hail from the “Land of the Midnight Sun.”

So what is it about the Red Wings’ organizational culture that enables Swedish players to excel?

These Stats Matter

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from E.J. Hradek at ESPN,

FACEOFFS
Here’s another category where we find the Wings at the top. They are winning 54.8 percent of their draws. The Sharks are second at 54.4 percent. The Senators, winning 52.7 percent of their faceoffs, are ranked third. The Canucks have been the worst faceoff team in the first quarter, winning just 45.9 percent of their draws. The Panthers (47.3) and the Canadiens (47.4) aren’t much better.

At The Quarter Pole

Blog: Abel to Yzerman By IwoCPO

That’s the cool phrase these days.  “At the pole…”  Not a big fan.  Not a big fan at all.  Not real sure I like the connotations involved with that.  Also pretty sure I hate Bob Dylan.  To quote Stu Nahan in Rocky II, “how this fighter of such limited ability has gained such popularity is a mystery.”  Same goes for Dylan.  Oh, he’s a poet.  A lyrical magician who was able to express the angst of a nation a turbulent time.

Whatever.  That voice makes me want to drive over a cliff.  Oh, but you’re saying, Rocky references and music critiques are not the bread and butter of this foblog.  Why must you?  Why do we always have to sift through the crap to get to the hard-hitting hockey analsysis?  The fact-based, late breaking, well-researched and equally well-considered viewpoints that cut to the very core of Red Wing hockey?  Oh yeah.  Well, ok.

Getzlaf Gets Contract Extension from Ducks

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

From TSN,

The Anaheim Ducks and forward Ryan Getzlaf have agreed to terms on a multi-year contract extension.

Sources tell TSN that it is for a five-year term beyond this season and is worth in vicinity of $26.5 million.

added 12:52pm (Paul), from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

The Ducks have always known the difference between the players that can make a difference in winning – and the ones that produce showy point totals, without actually contributing the way a core player needs to in order to justify his salary cost. The fact that Getzlaf is under contract for five more years after this one is just another step in the right direction for an organization that seems to know what it’s doing.

The Problem With The Flames…

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Calgary Herald,

...the Flames GM has transformed a quick, young aggressive team in 2004 into an older club that is both expensive and sluggish. And with just $3 million US left under the salary cap and a farm system lacking impact players, his options for change are severely curtailed in both the short and medium term.

In particular, the evolution of Sutter’s defence begs the question of whether the former coach has being paying attention to the workings of the new NHL.

Moving Emery

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from The Good, The Bad And The Duthie at the Ottawa Citizen,

I got a 2-hour sermon on how Gerber is the greatest thing out of Switzerland since Roger Federer, and how Ottawa will trade Emery, get after another big-time scorer, and win the cup without breaking a sweat. (These, of course, are the same guys who would have traded Gerber for a Gatorade last season.)

They insist the “trade Emery” talk is serious water-cooler material in Ottawa (Assuming people actually still talk at water-coolers, which I highly doubt). If that’s the case, it’s time for a reality check.

Game Alert- One Day Early

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Vancouver Province,

The Vancouver Canucks may start a three-game road trip in Edmonton tonight, but the focus is already on what’s shaping up as a grudge match Wednesday in Minnesota.

That would be the second half of a home-and-home series with the Wild, whom the Canucks drubbed 6-2 Friday at GM Place in a game that got very ugly. After a variety of elbows and chops, Canucks defenceman Mattias Ohlund two-handed Wild centre Mikko Koivu on the ankle, cracking a bone and earning himself a four-game suspension.

Blues Believe In Perron

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the News-Democrat,

Fast forward to Monday, and Perron began the day as one of the NHL’s hottest scorers with four goals and five points in his last five games. He has goals in four of his last seven contests and pumped some much-welcomed offensive life into a Blues team that followed up a three-game losing streak with four consecutive one-goal victories.

“He’s something special,” Blues President John Davidson said. “He’s got a great passion for the game; he’s a rink rat. There’s no question he’s got the ability to score goals and pass the pucks, plus he has no fear of going into any area on the ice.”

Crosby Always Working

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,

At 9:03 yesterday morning, with the players’ parking area at Mellon Arena nearly empty and his teammates possibly still home in bed, Sidney Crosby walked into the West Igloo Lounge and greeted about a dozen people.

He was sized up by two clothes stylists and shown some black duds hung on a rack and placed on tables.

This was no indulgent personal shopping spree for the popular Penguins captain. Crosby arrived for work early to devote more than an hour to ESPN The Magazine, which is doing photo shoots with several top-caliber athletes across the country in advance—well in advance—of its 10th anniversary issue in March.

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

The Chicago Blackhawks will name their new president today at a press conference at 12:00pm CT today.

I have been out of the loop for the last 18 hours due to a loss of internet access, so I haven’t heard much about this.  Any ideas?

update 11:25am, via the AP,

Chicago Cubs president John McDonough resigned Tuesday after a little more than a year on the job and is expected to take a similar position with the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Blackhawks called an afternoon news conference to introduce their new team president.
