Ted’s Day

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Ted Leonsis of Ted’s Take,

I started my day at a local bank ATM machine. I needed some cash for the weekend and then the trip to Montreal on Monday. As I was withdrawing cash a couple stood behind me. They were in their late 60’s, I believe. As I got the cash, I turned and the lovely older woman said to me, “Hi Ted. NBC Baby - NBC.”

I said, ”NBC?”

She said, “Nothing But Cup baby. Nothing but the Cup. What happened to you guys last night?” I smiled. We made some small talk and I left.

Next up was my local Blockbuster. As I entered a friend grabbed my arm and said, “Don’t choke - don’t blow it.” I said, “Thanks. With friends like you, who needs enemies?”

I then picked up a few films and at checkout the woman standing in front of me said, “What is up with your team man? That was some poor performance. I thought you guys looked tired and scared last night.” I said thank you and took my films and left.

I then went to get a pedicure.

Shane O’Brien Discusses His ‘Clown’ Fight

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Helene Elliott of the LA Times,

O’Brien raised his index finger and gestured to the crowd, palms up, as if to request more applause for his pugilistic feats. Kings Coach Terry Murray criticized him and called him a clown. O’Brien’s employers reportedly didn’t like it much, either, and called him in for a chat before he spoke to the media in Vancouver on Saturday.

“I wasn’t trying to show anybody up or anything like people keeping saying and talking about,” he told reporters in Vancouver before the Canucks flew to Los Angeles. “It was a big game, there was some emotion, the crowd was standing and next thing I know I was raising my hands in the air.

“It was probably a little immature and uncalled for, but at the same time, I don’t know, for those of you out there who have been in a fight sometimes you don’t think before you act—I’m pretty good at that. I’ve got to start thinking before I do stuff. I’ve done a lot worse in my life.”

He also complimented the Kings’ coach.

Lightning Owner Wants To Put Tampa On The Hockey Map Again

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe,

“My goal,’’ he said, “is to turn the Tampa Bay Lightning into a world-class organization,’’ said Vinik, who ran Fidelity’s Magellan Fund prior to opening his own hedge fund, Vinik Asset Management, which continues to be his day job. “To do that, I’ll hire a super CEO, and then it will be his job to hire a super GM, and it will be the GM’s job to hire a super coach.

“I want excellence throughout the organization, people who are great people with great vision and integrity.’’

If they come at a high cost, so be it, said Vinik, whose aim is to have the top three jobs filled by the time of the draft at the end of June. His career in finance has taught him that the best people often come with high price tags, but he’s OK with shelling out, “because in the end, you find those people pay dividends.’’

Are The Wings Getting On A Roll?

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Michael Rosenberg of the Detroit Free Press,

Babcock said before Game 5 that he does not believe in momentum early in a playoff series, but he does believe in momentum late in a series. That night, Babcock’s Wings scored three late goals to win, 4-1.

They have momentum now. They also have more firepower, stars who are starting to play like stars, and role players who know exactly what they are supposed to do.

They also have the hotter goalie. In the past two games, Jimmy Howard has been fantastic. This bodes well for the Wings, not just in this series, but beyond.

“As a goaltender, if you can be that guy, that’s good all the time and very good at playoff time,” Babcock said, “you’ve got a pretty happy team.”

There’s Always A But When It Comes To The Avs

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,

The Sharks were the better team and deserved to win the series. Let me repeat, the Sharks were the better team and deserved to win the series. But I do think the Avs were victimized by some bad officiating in the series. That subjected me to some self-righteous moralizing from some, for being a “homer.” Some media people are so afraid of being called a homer that they bend so far backwards in the other direction that they, in effect, become homers in the reverse way. They overcompensate the other way, which in itself is even more unprofessional than the hometown writer who just thinks there were some bad calls made against the team he covers. No matter what happens to the home team by an official’s call, they think, it can never be portrayed as just that – simply a bad call.

Late Evening Line

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

I’m scratching my head trying to figure out the Preds’ personnel decisions on the ill-fated final regulation power play, the one in which Chicago managed to score a short-handed goal to send the contest in overtime. Obviously the Predators didn’t need to score a goal, since they were already up 4-3. And they knew the Blackhawks would be doing everything they could to produce a tying score. So don’t you want your top defensive players on the ice? It made sense to have Shea Weber, Ryan Suter and Joel Ward out there. But Jason Arnott and Martin Erat? Why wouldn’t David Legwand and Jerred Smithson be on the ice in that situation?

Late Night Hockey Observations

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

• Almost every player drafted in the first round of the NFL draft hugged commissioner Roger Goodell. And all the while I’m thinking: Does anybody, outside of the immediate family, ever hug Gary Bettman?

• Great news for Rangers haters: Glen Sather will be back for another season as president and general manager.

• Having a lousy playoffs is nothing new for Capital defenceman Mike Green. He had lousy playoffs in junior also.
