The Canadiens Situation

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Habs Inside/Out,

Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey told the Montreal media this morning in a wide-ranging talk at the Bell Centre that his free-agent shopping is pretty much done – no Alexei Yashin or Brendan Shanahan, thank you very much – though his eyes remain open should something stupendous fall into his lap. Gainey also added that defenceman Sheldon Souray is no longer in talks with the club…

read on and listen to Gainey…

Bill Watters on Leafs Lunch today stated the Canadiens are “quietly” courting Yashin…

Zubrus Weighing His Options

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

via Tarik El-Bashir at Capitals Insider,

I spoke to Dainius Zubrus’s agent, Jerrold Colton, this morning. The Caps did not pursue him seriously and he doesn’t expect that to change, especially with Michael Nylander now in the fold. Colton did say that Zubrus has some offers from other teams and is currently weighing his options. Something could be announced today.

The State Of The NHL- Jacob’s Views

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Philadelphia Inquirer,

(Jeremy) Jacobs is considered an owner who will continue to fight for Bettman against more liberal members of the NHL. Last week, he spoke on a variety of topics that are important to the NHL.
Q: It seems the price of free agency, regardless of the cap, is going up. It’s possible for clubs to spend well over the cap during any given year if contracts are front-loaded because all contracts are averaged. Are you worried about this becoming a trend?
A: This is what I [mean] when I say people are learning this agreement. Sure, you are going to see some of this. We may have to turn around and change that going forward. But you [have] got to live with what you got right now in this agreement.

Peca Can’t Be Held Hostage

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

Michael Peca is on Fan590 in Toronto (Hockey Central Show) and said he can’t be held hostage by the Leafs.  It is in their court to sign him but Peca would love to play with a very good friend of his, Jason Blake.

added 12:34pm, Peca feels disappointed the Leafs haven’t shown much interest in him as of today.  Can’t really pinpoint what the problem is.
added 12:36pm, Hasn’t heard from the Sabres, but Buffalo is a great city and still a good team.
added 12:42pm, (from Alanah)  Darren Dreger on ‘Leafs Lunch’ basically said that signing Peca is a cap problem (obviously) and Toronto wouldn’t consider it for over $1.5mil

Oilers Aren’t Talking About Nylander

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Terry Jones of the Edmonton Sun,

Despite rumours and an erroneous radio report and the allegedly waiting all day for returned paperwork, Michael Nylander did not become an Edmonton Oiler yesterday.
So upset at whatever transpired when the Washington Capitals announced they’d signed the free agent to a four year deal yesterday afternoon, Edmonton Oilers GM Kevin Lowe was said to be so livid he refused to talk about it, even to a Sun Media reporter parked outside the team officies for two hours.

Habs Made The Right Move Signing Markov

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Montreal Gazette,

Many people thought general manager Bob Gainey overpaid for Markov’s services, although Markov’s agent, Don Meehan, said he thought the player would have commanded more on the market.
After two days of frenzied bargaining for free agents, it’s obvious that Gainey and Meehan were both right and the Canadiens got a bargain in Markov.
Yesterday, the Canadiens had to fork out $22 million over four years to veteran defenceman Roman Hamrlik, who is older, and you can make a case that Gainey did pay too much in this instance.

The same can be said with the Wings, when they locked-up Datsyuk for $46.9M for 7 years… Any others?
