Abel to Yzerman

Update below: there is a poll at the bottom of this post, and the results are shocking.
This is about a week old. You may have seen it. I had not. It made me happy and hopefully it has the same effect on you.
First a few congratulations are in order. Gramps is back. Grampa Pinhead, who has served as the A2Y logic czar since our inception a few years ago, has brought back his own blog: HockeytownTodd. If you’re familiar with Gramps’ comments at our site, you know he’s traditional, cranky and caustic. Great reading and always a source for stats you won’t find anywhere else.
Secondly, Behind The Jersey has been selected hockey’s tenth best blog by Sports Business Daily. Visit BTJ to see which other hockey bloggers made the cut. I’ll let you know when Cracked comes out with their rankings. I’m sure I’ll be in there somewhere.
Oh, and back to Gramps for a second…
Well as you can see by now, the new look is nearly complete. Thanks to A2Y reader, TeamDub, we’ve got ourelves a new header. Soon, once the voting is complete, the last bit of graphics will be selected and placed on the page.
But, just hours after the new banner was introduced last night…controversy erupted behind the scenes. Dive fans contacted the A2Y art staff and began complaining in lispy phrases that they felt mith-represented, that since Abel To Yzerman wasn’t specifically a Red Wing blog (perception is everything you know), they should have had more input into the selection of the new banner.
I’ve decided I don’t like the term “blogosphere” anymore. Kind of like “Michigander” or “diet”. Not real fond of those two either. So, this will be the last time you see it at A2Y. Henceforth and thusly, any time I present to you a conglomeration of views in one sloppy post I will title it “Stealing From My Friends”.
I sense that you are apprehensive. Apprehensive like a transvestite Dive fan caught in Raleigh at 0130 on a Tuesday? No, but understandably wary. Me too. Here we go.
It’s been nearly two years since we came up with the blog title, “Abel to Yzerman.” For most of you, the significance of that has been pretty clear. “Abel” refers to Wing legend Sid Abel. “Yzerman” is our tribute to a little-known role player who somehow eeked his way onto the Detroit roster for 23 consecutive seasons.
Why do I bring that up?
A2Y reader BobTheZee mentioned this morning that he was hoping to see more about Grigorenko’s “debut” last night. I agreed, and here you go.
“He was great out there,” McGrath said. “He can move the puck and he gave me a lot of open chances. He’s smart out there and he and Jan Mursak are two of the best European players I have ever played with.”
Added Mursak, who was a standout himself: “It is hard to tell how good (Grigorenko) is after only one game. But I liked playing with him and (McGrath). I think we will better next game.”
My only concern is that it’s early in the morning and I may not be prepared to give this story the treatment it deserves. I’m going to try, but I have to tell you that I’m a little nervous right now. Tooling around the Wing blogs and I just be-bopped over to Behind the Jersey. What do I find? A frigging goldmine. Gather the kids. Warm the milk. Find that John Denver cd you keep handy for special occasions and pop it in. Because we have, that’s right, fun for the whole family.
It seems that I was born to write these two sentences: a cross-dressing male prostitute was arrested yesterday in Denver. According to various reports uncovered by Deadspin, Police described Darren Garcia as being 27, having long hair, significant amounts of makeup and wearing…
...a Colorado Avalanche jersey.
Thank you god.
