Winless In March

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

It’s not March Madness around the Red Wings these days — more like March Sadness.

The march toward the bottom of the NHL — and better odds to land the first overall pick — continued in earnest Thursday with a 4-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings.

The loss extended the Red Wings’ winless streak to eight games (0-7-1), with difficult road games in Anaheim (Friday) and Colorado (Sunday) left to conclude the weekend.

How is this March going?...

“There wasn’t a lot of offense out there, it was tough to come by,” coach Jeff Blashill told FSD. “We competed real hard. Obviously it’s not a 4-1 game, it was a one-goal game.”

Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press with this...

Coreau is unrestricted this summer. He does not appear to fit into the Wings’ plans, but he may fit on the farm.

“I try not to think about that too much,” Coreau said. “Just go out and play for the Detroit Red Wings and if it works out well, then maybe stay here. Who knows?”

Below, watch the game highlights and post-game interviews.

Zetterberg, Coreau and Blashill.

Watching the recent games by the Wings, it’s like Groundhog Day.

I will go even so far to say the games are brutal to watch (the late start time may have something to do with it).

From HSJ:

He may get another start, but the Wings will have to decide Monday whether to keep Coreau as he’d have to go on waivers to be sent down after the 30-day mark.

Is this really a concern? Are they really worried about someone claiming Coreau off waivers? And if he was claimed, who cares? Are they trying to set GR up for a playoff run? Is that really the biggest worry right now? If they do send him down who do they dress as the backup? McCollum? Don’t they run into the same “issue” when they try to send him back down? Wouldn’t it make more sense to keep Coreau up and keep playing McCollum with Machovsky in GR?
I don’t know why this sentence upsets me so much. It’s a backup goalie who will not factor into the future but a decision to expose him on waivers raises so many questions.

I don’t get that either.  If the Wings have no plans for him, what does it honestly matter?

It matters to HSJ, as she’s had a major hard on for him, the last year and half or so.

Looks to me like Blashill is just about out of excuses.  Time to throw in the towel along with our coach and GM.

I thought we outplayed and outchanced the Kings for most of the game, but again found a way to lose on a crazy goal from behind the net. For the whole season we are close in every game, but finding way to lose. Probably the best thing right now is to remain competitive, but keep losing.

By the way I thought Helm/Larkin/Mantha line looked good, but still it does not make any sense to have Svech playing 5 minutes on a 4th line if the idea is to take a look at him and help with his development. Larkin/Mantha/Svech will be an interesting line I would try for 10 games or so.

Nope, makes too much sense and we can’t have logic and sense.

Hard to forget HSJ was seemingly the only person on the planet who took seriously
the idea of protecting Coreau in the expansion draft.

At this point, giving Machovsky more experience and more of a look, including in important
AHL games seems more useful.

We kind of know what Coreau and McCollum are already
- seemingly good guys who are usually effective AHL goalies.

On the other hand, there’s really no reason not to play Coreau a bunch
more down the stretch to see if more reps help him. And if nothing else
it’s a more honest way to go down giving guys opportunities than, say,
Buffalo trading for Anders Lindback seemingly specifically because he
had like the worst numbers in the league.

This. Exactly this. Which is why I find that suggestion of sending Coreau back to GR so maddening. Just leave him here and he can split time with Howard or take the bulk of the starts. I can not imagine a scenario where sending him to GR helps anybody. Use the Griffins for what they are, a development team, and see what you have with Machovsky.

I like WiiM’s take on the losing.  They tweeted out an image of reverse standings.

“Eight straight losses has us climbing!”

Yeah it is exciting in an odd way to be one of the team’s possibly competing for
a top pick.

Following Columbus as a sort of second team, they only dropped compared
to where they finished - well, occasionally picked where expected - but otherwise
always dropped - sometimes significantly. When they picked second, the two
top picks were Yakupov and Ryan Murray.

But it’s still exciting to possibly draft an impact player.
