Wings Sign UFA Center Vladislav Namestnikov

added 3:08pm, below the press release is his press conference.

DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings today agreed to terms with center Vladislav Namestnikov on a two-year contract.

Namestnikov, 27, was originally drafted in the first round (27th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Tampa Bay Lighting and spent parts of five seasons with the team from 2013-18. The 6-foot, 183-pound forward has totaled 425 NHL games between the Lightning, New York Rangers, Ottawa Senators and Colorado Avalanche, registering 189 points (83-106-189) and 227 penalty minutes. Namestnikov played for three teams in 2019-20, appearing in two games with the Rangers prior to a trade to Ottawa, where he tallied 25 points (13-12-25) in 54 games before he was moved to Colorado at the trade deadline. With the Avalanche, he recorded six points (4-2-6) in nine regular-season games and added five points (4-1-5) in 12 playoff games. Namestnikov is two years removed from his most productive NHL campaign, when he picked up 48 points (22-26-48) in 81 games between the Lightning and Rangers in 2017-18. He also skated in 134 American Hockey League games with the Syracuse Crunch, recording 104 points (40-64-104) and 84 penalty minutes and making the 2015 AHL All-Star Game.

Born in Zhukovskiy, Russia, Namestnikov spent part of his childhood in Michigan and has multiple family members with NHL connections, including his father, Evgeny Namestnikov, who played 43 NHL games with Vancouver, NY Islanders and Nashville between 1993-00, and his uncle, Vyacheslav Kozlov, a member of the Russian Five who played for Detroit from 1992-01 and totaled 1,182 NHL games until 2009-10. Prior to turning professional, Namestnikov racked up 139 points (52-87-139), a plus-27 rating and 99 penalty minutes in 131 games with the Ontario Hockey League's London Knights, winning an OHL championship in 2012. On the international stage, Namestnikov has represented Russia at multiple international tournaments, most notably winning a bronze medal at the 2017 IIHF World Championship after picking up six points (3-3-6) in 10 games.

One constant with all the signings and Staal trade, all good in the room, team players.

Makes you wonder if there was an issue in the room last year or maybe Yzerman wanted to establish a few things in the room, just like he did when he was playing.

So much money wasted on the bottom 6. I wonder if we have the most money dedicated to the bottom 6.

He’s going to get so many picks at the deadline in the next two years. This is great.

The problem with this list is the third line.  Two 36+ year olds who are no good making $8.25M, and Erne.  I’m not sure why we’d assume Erne, an obvious depth guy, would be a lock to play above Zadina—or even Svech.  Or for that matter Namestnikov, who had 17 goals last year

Well, there doesnt appear to be an AHL right now, so what would you have Yzerman do about erne (whom he re-signed), Fil and Nielsen?

Theyve already had a buy out period. Do you think he will take advantage of the 2nd buy out period? Can they be shipped to Europe eventually?

Namestnikov is not a 4th liner on this team.

I think a more likely lineup is:

Bert - Larks - Mantha
Fabbri - Namestnikov - Z
Ryan - Fil - Gagner (Svech)
Helm - Nielsen - Glenny
Erne

Nemeth - Hronek
Merrill - DK
Staal - Stecher
Biega

Bernier
Greiss

That’s a 23 man roster without Timashov so not exactly sure where he fits in unless another move up front is in the works.

This is an intriguing signing.  Namestnikov was a bubble fantasy hockey asset in our league last year; when properly utilized he provides a good amount of hits (avg. 2/game), some blocks, and he started to light up offensive-wise near the end of the season going 6-3-9 in the last 13 regular season games seeing 2nd-line time.

But he’s not really a center, recently.  He hasn’t taken faceoffs regularly since he played for Tampa Bay in 2017-18, and when he did he was around 47% FO.

In Ottawa and TB he saw second line time along with some PP2 duties, I have a feeling that’s where Blash will try and slot him in for starters maybe experimenting with Fabbri and Namestnikov on 2C and rotating Ryan/Bertuzzi/Zadina out on the other wing position.  Folks will get injured and line shakeups will happen and we’ll see where the dust settles.  Gagner will stick to the 3/4 line.  Ultimately I see one Ryan dropping to the 3rd line and Zadina taking over on the second line.

A lot of our guys can now play multiple positions so we have a ton of flexibility from a coaching standpoint to see what clicks.

Totally agree with @ilovehomers that we’re set up for the chance to grab more picks at the trade deadline and have some buffer come expansion draft time.

All told, Stevie just bolstered our lineup with 4 skaters who bring depth, possibility and flexibility for under what the Leafs are paying for William Nylander.  Plenty of room to sign lil’ Bert and Mantha in their prime.

I’m excited to see this season.

* If Svechnikov ascends to where we hope he will, then we’ll be sitting one of Gagner/Filpulla/Helm if everyone’s uninjured, which we all know will never be the case.

@hockeyfreak13 I think your lineup is spot on (though not sure about Nemeth on the 1st pairing), but Greiss is going to shake out as our new starter in the end, I think.

Though, with the condensed schedule I could see us rotating goalies pretty regularly, especially if the talk of doing back-to-back as a matter of course for the whole season becomes a reality.

We don’t have a problem unless

a) there’s no AHL for the whole season; AND

b) nobody gets injured; AND

c) for some reason we’re unwilling to waive one or more of our garbage contracts.

Can’t believe he bought out ablekater was extending that mess 6 years   to fill the roster out with a bunch of depth players on 1-2 year deals that will not be here long. Why?

Why didn’t he use that cap space to fleece a team needing to solve a problem?

I don’t dislike any of these signings more so the amount of them. I guess we know what the organization thinks of Evegeny

BTW a player Yzerman Drafted? At least developed, Ie a retread.

“Heavy and hard-to-play-against” appears to be the theme I’m getting, Ryan.  If you look at the makeup of TBL, that team is built to last a long while in the playoffs.  Now, Balls Hill ain’t no John Cooper, but here’s hoping he understands how Yzerman wants his team to play.

I think the other theme seems to be “sign guys who have something to prove.” If they play up to their potential, they get flipped at the deadline for picks that are higher than their current resume would justify. If they don’t “up their game,” the contracts are short and the dollar amount is small.

The Wings were never going to get any picks for Abby at the deadline so they took on a manageable buyout penalty in order to open up a spot (this year and into the future) for guys who may be moveable.

And that’s fine, OTC, but he said he still has to ice a competitive team and surround the youngsters with veterans who don’t seem to mind being mentors.  I love the deals made.  Love ‘em, but I still want them to compete and win games.  And you could be right that if those acquisitions turn into trade baits, well, let’s do it.  Got nothing against that neither.

Yzerman mentioned the Abby buyout was purely out of saving actually dollars right now, which makes sense.

He also mentioned Zadina will be fulltime NHL so his waiver status is moot.  Someones gotta go.

DDR, thatd be the ultimate offseason move.  No one wants that contract though.  Wed have to give to get it off the books.

More realistically I could see either Erne or Svech getting traded.  More likely, Svech.  But hes also the exact type of player thats motovated to stay in the league.

Hard to say.  Guess yoy could put flip on that list too.  He and Neilsen just seem like theyd be hard to move.  No GMs have been dropping me nuggets though, so…  what do I know?

The actually-tradable guys we could lose with no downside to the club are Helm and Glendening.  Waaay more valuable to a Cup contender than to us and we could retain salary to get it done.  Gagner too, probably.

Why trade our garbage guys when they could just be waived and sent down to the AHL (or whatever equivalent league / agreement is set up for call ups to play in this year)? We still have lots of cap space, so who cares if an extra 2 mil of Filpulas cap hit sits on our cap for 1 year.  And when he gets through waivers then you can always call him back up. Would it really matter if someone claims Erne’s and his 1 million dollar contract if he doesn’t win a roster spot in camp and gets waived? Opening up a roster spot or 2 won’t be that difficult, and I bet they’re waiting to see how guys look at camp and to see if any injuries pop up before opening day.

I think this is a great signing and I bet half the guys Yzerman signed in the last few days will be traded for picks at the deadline, at which time the kids will get their chance to step in.

That is an option.  The Ericsson treatment.  But they went out of their way to pay less actual dollars with the Abby buyout, im not sure how keen theyd be on paying NHL money to an AHLer right now either.  Especially if you could just avoid the situation and move someone for an asset, even if its a 6th rounder.  You may be right that they look at training camp before they make a move though.

We ever get any news on the Tyler Johnson front as well?

Itd be great to have young players with good vets, I agree.

...we also must have room for them.

Maybe rosters get expanded. If not…7 dmen means no room for Cholo, Lindstrom, Seider. If its a short term injury, they probably just dip into mcIlrath or lashoff.
