Wings, Hawks, Gary’s 13 Game Regular Season: Perfect.

I'm not going to lie. I'd forgotten about this thing until about thirty minutes ago.  Thankfully for you, I usually only need about six minutes to type a standard fact-based, non-biased work of art to keep you happy for a pop or two.

The Hawks are undefeated, invincible, a wrecking ball of talent and starch.

The Wings are battered, Helm-less, down three defensemen and laden with rookies, castoffs and Swiss men.

Surely, all signs point to a Chicago walk in the park.

Right?

It's a Live Blog, bitches.

I didn’t see it that way cal.  I thought the wings played pretty good, they got their breaks and everything, but they were in it all game.

Now it would have been nice if one more little thing had gone their way, but it didn’t.

Yes, let alone two.  To have been badly outplayed by an undermanned Red Wing team yet somehow still pull out the win, you’d have to say the Blackhawks were extremely lucky.

Oh wait, you were talkin’ about the Wings—nevermind.

They’re still having problems around the net.  Not enough screening of the goalie, and almost no second shots.  They can’t count on perfect shots or a perfect string of passes for a goal.  That’s not going to work against good teams.  Not enough guys getting their noses dirty in the trenches.  Absolutely did not take advantage of a worn out and soft team tonight.

Bad call by me.  Deflected off Brunners stick.  Not all on Jimmah.

Now, about that Power play?

Agreed.  I lost track of how many times I was screaming at the tv last night, and that was only the first two periods.  They would get close to the net and then vanish.  Literally, the Wings would disappear from the screen.  Why would they work so hard to take the puck within striking distance and then just skate away?  I remember a sequence when Z worked his ass off to take the puck to the net (finally!), the puck squirted to center, but there was no one home.  No one followed him in, no one looking for rebounds, no one looking to clean up the garbage.  This happens all the time.  I was so pissed.  Why would there be no one at center?

And oh my god that power play.  Yeah, the Blackhawks have a good penalty kill, but holy hell the Wings power play sucks.  The refs teed it up on a silver platter and the Wings used the platter to play frisbee.  Still waiting on Renney’s power play to create chaos in front of the net.  I’m not blaming Renney, by the way.

All that being said, they’re treading water in the standings.  They’re playing .500 hockey and it’s early still.  Things could be a lot worse.  Except the power play.  Hard to imagine the power play being worse.

And the passing.  The passing, the passing, the passing.  I saw Damien Brunner alone in the slot (Brunner of all people.  He loves to shoot!  He apparently will die if he doesn’t shoot the puck!).  He passed to the point.  Franzen, alone in the slot.  Passed to no one, puck slid past center ice.  Over and over and over again, they pass, pass, pass.

Come to think of it, they weren’t in the slot, but the point is still the same.  They didn’t shoot when the had the opportunity.

Once again, the power play failed them, especially in the second period, when they had four chances, including a two-man advantage for 43 seconds. Detroit had only five shots on the power play, one more than the Blackhawks registered while shorthanded.

DET are 2-for-26 on the power play in five games - - 7.6%

Babcock has recently mentioned - - due to their personnel, the Wings are going to have to grind out wins.

Redmond hinted at the same thing last night - - a couple of times.

But the grind on the PP is worse than sitting in a dentist chair with Steve Martin working on your cavity.

it’s time for Babcock to tell the players that for the next couple games, forget about defense.  pinch in, get odd man rushes, crash the net with three players, SCORE SCORE SCORE.  score 15 goals in the next three games, no matter how many the other team scores.  they’re losing anyway, at least they can get their scoring touch back.

gulp

I missed the game to hear some Blues (music not the “hockey” team from St.Lose) and that one sentence told me everything I needed to know about the game. Kim Wilson still brings it; I highly recommend seeing him if he comes to your town.

These silly one point games are going to cost them a shot at the draft lottery. Wings are now tied for 7th in the standings, even though they are 27th in PP%, 29th in PK%, and 20th in GF (which includes the 5 goal MN game). The remarkable thing about the Wings’ PP ineptness is that they rank 6th in PP opportunities.

Five games in nine nights. Does Babs intend to play Jimmah in every single game?

If the alternative is Mc Collum, then probably yes.

Monster is still injured, isn’t he?  Everyone else is.

Damn what a privilege it is to watch Helm play.  An increasingly rare privilege, unfortunately.
