Wings Have The Cap Room To Sign Dylan Larkin And Anthony Mantha

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

The Red Wings have 20 players signed to one-way contracts, totaling a cap hit of approximately $70.8 million (12 forwards, six defensemen, two goaltenders).

That includes Johan Franzen, who'll be placed on long-term injured reserve before the season, giving the club cap relief (possibly close to $3.9 million).

Add to that about $2.6 million of dead cap space from the bought-out contracts of Stephen Weiss and Xavier Ouellet and some bonus payouts from last season.

That adds up to about $73.4 million (including Franzen). The cap ceiling is $79.5 million....

Factoring in cap relief from Franzen's contract, the Red Wings should be able to sign Larkin and Mantha without having to dump a contract.

I would certainly hope so. Should have been the first priority IMHO.

Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!

The oldest, most ineffective lineup in the league and Holland still has to rely on LTIR to maybe squeeze the RFAs in under the cap.  That’s some mighty fine asset management there, Lou.

If Larkin figures to get 6M and Mantha 3M, how does 79.5 - 73.4 = 6.1M, not counting making room for any new rookies, make enough cap room?

If your figures are correct it doesn’t, did the same thing with AA, inked Daley, re-signed Tatar. This year they signed Vanek before securing Larkin and Mantha, again leaving them short on cap space. They played hardball with AA and I also believe held his numbers down having him center the forth line, etc, knowing they would need to resign him and sending a message to Larkin and Mantha that this is what happens if you’re going to try and get more than we want to pay you, don’t buck the system.

I’m not sure KH will offer Larkin $6mi. He’s RFA with no arbitration rights, and low-balling the team’s future captain/superstar/face of the franchise sounds like a total Holland move. He’ll cite cap crunch and other BS problems that are of his own making, while offering Larkin $4mil and Mantha $2.5. He’ll probably want term, too, bkz both guys become arbitration eligible after one more year.
