Will You Be Watching The 2020 NHL Draft Lottery?

No need to tell you how important this is for the Detroit Red Wings and their rebuild.

Watching the Draft Lottery live?  Any superstitions you will be putting to use?

Just in case you need an update on the Draft Lottery.  Friday at 8pm ET on NBCSN and NHL Network in the U.S. as well as Sportsnet and TVA Sports in Canada.

Below, all the information one needs...

via the NHL PR department

* The top three picks in the 2020 NHL Draft will be awarded via the 2020 NHL Draft Lottery: the 1st Lottery Draw will determine the team selecting first overall, the 2nd Lottery Draw will determine the team selecting second overall and the 3rd Lottery Draw will determine the team selecting third overall.

* The 2020 NHL Draft Lottery will be held in two phases, if necessary.

* Fifteen teams will be eligible in Phase 1 of the 2020 NHL Draft Lottery (which will be held June 26): the seven teams that already have not qualified for the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs – ranked in inverse order of their points percentages at the time of the pause in the regular season – and eight “placeholders” that represent the to-be-determined Qualifying Round teams that do not advance, thus maintaining previously established odds for the Draft Lottery.

1st Lottery Draw

* If the winning team of the 1st Lottery Draw is from the #1-7 group, that team wins the right to the first overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft. If the winning team of the 1st Lottery Draw is from the #8-15 group, the right to the first overall pick will be determined in Phase 2 of the 2020 NHL Draft Lottery.

* After the 1st Lottery Draw, the winning team (from either the #1-7 group or the #8-15 group) no longer will be eligible for the 2nd or 3rd Lottery Draws. All number combinations originally assigned to this team will become “Re-Draw Combinations” for the 2nd and 3rd Lottery Draws. The remaining teams’ odds will increase on a proportionate basis for the 2nd Lottery Draw, based on which team wins the 1st Lottery Draw.

2nd Lottery Draw

* If the winning team of the 2nd Lottery Draw is from the #1-7 group, that team wins the right to the second overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft. If the winning team of the 2nd Lottery Draw is from the #8-15 group, the right to the second overall pick will be determined in Phase 2 of the 2020 NHL Draft Lottery.

* After the 2nd Lottery Draw, the winning team (from either the #1-7 group or the #8-15 group) no longer will be eligible for the 3rd Lottery Draw. All number combinations originally assigned to this team will become “Re-Draw Combinations” for the 3rd Lottery Draw. The remaining teams’ odds will increase on a proportionate basis for the 3rd Lottery Draw, based on which team wins the 2nd Lottery Draw.

3rd Lottery Draw

* If the winning team of the 3rd Lottery Draw is from the #1-7 group, that team wins the right to the third overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft. If the winning team of the 3rd Lottery Draw is from the #8-15 group, the right to the third overall pick will be determined in Phase 2 of the 2020 NHL Draft Lottery.

What If All Three Draws Are Won by Teams in the #1-7 Group?

* The winning teams receive the respective top three selections in the 2020 NHL Draft. The remaining four teams in the #1-7 group are assigned 2020 NHL Draft positions 4 through 7, in inverse order of their points percentages at the time of the pause in the regular season. The next eight 2020 NHL Draft positions (8 through 15) are assigned to the eight teams that do not advance from the Qualifying Round, in inverse order of their points percentages at the time of the pause in the regular season. In these circumstances, Phase 2 of the 2020 NHL Draft Lottery will not be necessary.

What If Any of the Three Draws Are Won by Teams in the #8-15 Group?

* The draws for the corresponding selections will be conducted during Phase 2 of the 2020 NHL Draft Lottery among only the eight Qualifying Round teams that fail to advance.

Phase 2 of 2020 NHL Draft Lottery (If Necessary)

* Phase 2 of the 2020 NHL Draft Lottery, if necessary, will be conducted between the Qualifying Round and First Round of the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Exact date and time TBD.

* Phase 2 participants will include all eight teams that do not advance from the Qualifying Round (or the teams that have acquired their first-round picks).

* In each Phase 2 draw, all participants will have the same odds.

* Following each Phase 2 draw, the winning team will be assigned the corresponding top three selection in the 2020 NHL Draft and, if another Phase 2 draw is necessary, that team’s numbered lottery ball will be removed.

* When all Phase 1 and Phase 2 draws are completed and the top three selections in the 2020 NHL Draft have been awarded, the remaining selections in the top 15 will be assigned to the 12 teams that did not win a draw, in inverse order of their points percentages at the time of the pause in the regular season.

Sure will. I’ll probably have a Little Caesars pizza and plenty of liquor to help ease the inevitable let down.

What else would I watch? I’ll have my Gary Bettman voodoo doll ready.

Nope.  I’ve had enough bad news in 2020.  And much like everything else produced by the NHL, its a clown show that shouldn’t exist.  Just announce the slots and quit trying to drum up drama.

Im sure Draper, or whoever else they send this year, has enough anxiety over what it feels like to get screwed sans lube by the league.  They don’t need to have it done for an audience.

No.  I’m very interested in the results, but have no interest in actually watching it play out.

From the descriptions I’m reading, they’re going to actually choose/announce #1 FIRST, then #2 and so on, rather than starting at #15, like they usually do. Am I reading that right? It would make sense, bkz the bottom 8 will all be TBD.

I’ll definitely be watching, tho. Jelle’s Marble Runs are great, but they only get you so far, sports-wise.

Yes, that way the #1 pick gets the true announced odds.  However, the reveal will be in reverse order with #1 at the end of the show (well, likely they will broadcast the reveal of #1 and then number two will be implied, just for showmanship and quality TV news highlights in Buffalo or whereever the #1 pick actually goes).

I mean…maybe? The whole thing sounds kind of convoluted with the whole team A-H thing. I never cared to read through it.

Also helps that I’ve opted out of cable + a new puppy to watch over, but maybe ill stream it from somewhere.

Any idea if any of those are streaming online for us cord-cutters?

If not I’ll be doing my usual click-refresh every 15 seconds on KK - your servers can handle that, right?  smile

Fingers crossed that the bottom 8 all end up as TBD and thus no need for a 2nd or 3rd lottery….

As hopeful as I am for #1 I suspect 2 teams will bump the wings down to 3rd spot..

hmmm

Exactly. But this is the NHL. Won’t it be fun and bring in tons of new fans when the big reveal at the end is ::drum roll:: TBD! Yikes.

HD, if I see a link or an embed code, I will post it in A2Y.

KK servers can handle the refreshing too and I will have an open post for the Lottery around 7pm on Friday.

There is a YouTube channel I follow (The Hockey Guy) and he always live streams the draft and will be doing the lottery as well.  He’s in Canada and while he can’t directly broadcast Sportsnet for copyright reasons, he has it on in the background and updates info in real time. He’s actually a pretty good source for all things NHL and he usually has several post per day.

Ottawa messed up organization, the Hockey Gods need to work on them getting the Lowest 2 picks Drawn for them.  Canada’s new Oilers!!

Bob iss good with this stuff.  Before I read it, I know it won’t be simpler than it is now.  Teams still tank but are not rewarded straight out.  The Sens covered their butts with 2 picks in the top 3 on paper , The Sharks must have been crazy.  Sharks did not really get what they thought (so far) and the Sens haven’t picked a player yet. Being biased, I think the 1st pick should be a little higher but Ottawa might get a couple of very good prospects.

Thanks for the Bob tweets, Paul.  Fingers crossed

I’ll watch. I’ll see the results. And I’ll almost certainly be just as pissed as I’ve been after the last three lottery drawings.

But thank Gord this is a deep draft in the top four slots. Even when (not if, but when) they get dropped in the draft order, the Wings will still get a quality player.

I thought I had this whole draft kinda sorta figured out…. however reading Bob McKenzie’s tweets has me concerned.

Here’s the scenario:

In the draw Friday the Wings win #1 spot. But spots #2 or #3 are won by one of the unknown teams (A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H).

The unknown teams are supposed to be determined in the play in games when play resumes.

What if the season is never completed???
Bob McKenzie says the league has a plan for this situation, but hadn’t informed the teams as if yet.

McKenzie says in the event the season isn’t completed they may have a lottery with all 31 teams eligible to win the top pick.

So, theoretically the Wings could win #1 spot, the season isn’t completed and a second lottery with 31 teams happens and the Wings get screwed out if top pick !????!!!

Sorry if this is confusing, but I know somehow the Wings get shafted.

That’s exactly my concern, even if a letter team doesn’t move way up. Why hold the lottery before we even know who is IN the lottery? And if this whole playoff thing gets canned, you KNOW guys like Jacobs are going to whine at the league for a 31-team lottery, and even shoot for equal odds for everyone.
