Will Evgeny Svechnikov Still Be A Member Of The Detroit Organization At Noon Tomorrow?

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

The Detroit Red Wings sound like they hope Evgeny Svechnikov will remain with the organization, but they left themselves vulnerable to losing a former first-round pick for nothing when they placed him on waivers Monday....

“Unfortunately, Evgeny has had a number of injuries so he hasn’t been able to show a full kind of season of where he is at,” coach Jeff Blashill said Monday. “But we also have to make roster decisions and you’re restricted to your roster.

"Nothing is permanent. You have that risk, potentially, of losing guys, but let’s see where we’re at here at noon tomorrow.”

Evgeny Svechnikov at Detroit Red Wings training camp practice in Little Caesars Arena, Jan. 2, 2021.

Svechnikov, 24, might appeal to another team. He has size (6-feet-3, 208 pounds), works incredibly hard, and is on a one-year, $874,125 deal and will still be a restricted free agent upon expiration.

One intriguing possibility is the Carolina Hurricanes, Thursday's 2021 opening opponent and home to Svechnikov’s younger brother, Andrei. The two have talked multiple times of their dream of playing against one another in the NHL; now maybe it will be together. Another possibility is former Wings GM Ken Holland, now with the Edmonton Oilers, puts in a claim for a guy he drafted.

I don’t think the Wings lose him.  There are a fair number of more promising players available on today’s waiver wire (hopefully the Wings can do a bit more shopping today).

Ah yes, the Oilers. These are the same Oilers who are over the cap and likely can’t afford to have an entire 23-man roster.

They’re going to add ANOTHER player to their NHL roster…

Also, these same Oilers are the ones who are currently crossing their fingers that Juhjar Khaira passes through waivers.

THIS is one of the possibilities for claiming Svechnikov.

I wouldn’t ever put it past Kenny to find a way to acquire a familiar player even if he has to move around some pieces to do so.

If it has to happen I hope he gets a legit chance to earn meaningful minutes with Carolina.

Corey Perry is also put on waivers today.  I know the Red Wings would love having him on the roster. smile

They signed Perry for the playoffs.
Could be claimed I guess but I’m sure Montreal wasn’t wild about
him blocking a younger player - with potentially more effective everyday player upside until then

My initial reaction was shock to him being on waivers but…meh.  I don’t know that he’s part of the long-term solution in DET at this point.  I don’t wish him any ill will, but, team has to do what a team has to do.

Who knows, maybe he passes through, has a breakout season in DET?  But DET can’t keep holding time off and hoping.
