Updated below with riveting IwoCPO commentary. Don’t miss it!
Their performance this playoff season, the entire season, probably made this decision about as easy as they come for Boy Wonder Kenny Holland.
Ken Holland said today he wants to bring back both Chelios and Dominik Hasek. Hasek has declined to show his hand when asked about his future, but Chris Osgood told me last week he thought Hasek would be back. Holland is hoping the same.
“Dom has been a big factor for us,” Holland said. “Chelios, we play him 18-19 minutes, but he wants to play more. He’s bugging our coaching staff all winter long and bugging me all winter long to play more hockey. We’re holding him back because we want to have him fresh for the long haul.”
Want me to guess? Cool. I will.
Chelios would sign a contract in crayon if Holland slid it under his nose…without even looking at the amount. 100 percent he’ll be back.
Hasek? He’ll stay if he’s feeling the love from the organ-I-zation. That’s my guess…that if he believes the Wings truly want him back and value what he brings to the table, he’ll be back too. But, based on the fact that he’s insane, I give my prediction a 50/50 shot.
Comments are already coming in and I’d expect this to be an interesting discussion. How do I feel about Hasek coming back? I like it. I like what he brings to this team and that is confidence. Last year was a disgrace. Losing to that Edmonton team was a frigging disaster and you can point the finger squarely at the team’s insecurity about the goalie they played in front of. You’ve seen how they react this year when behind.
They know for a fact that when Hasek lets up an early goal, he tightens the screws. The last sane brain cell dissolves and he goes into some sort of wack-job crazy Czech mind warp of a frigging zone. And they like that.
Bring him back and ride him as long as we can. Osgood’s more than capable as a back up and a twenty-game starter. And if, as Hoser pointed out, the tissue paper tears beyond repair….thanks for the run you psycho bastard, now where’s Jimmy?
