Why Would The Detroit Red Wings Re-sign Jimmy Howard?

from James O'Brien of NBC Sports,

Every time I start to feel some doubt about questioning if the Detroit Red Wings are truly committed to rebuilding, something silly surfaces.

Wednesday provided the latest head-scratcher, as MLive.com’s Ansar Khan reports that the Red Wings are “committed” to keeping Jimmy Howard, and are likely to hand the 34-year-old goalie a multiyear extension.

Considering the circumstances, such a decision would be downright baffling....

My guess is that Howard would receive a lower AAV than his current $5.29 million cap hit in an extension, yet I’d also wager that he’d be be paid far more handsomely with a proactive extension – with a team that sure seems more smitten with him than virtually any other front office in the league – than what he’d get on the free agent market.

The Red Wings would essentially be negotiating against themselves here.

If such a move came to fruition, it could be a prime example of a team falling too deeply in love with their own players, and Detroit is in this mess, in part, because GM Ken Holland’s had his blinders on when it comes to overpaying supporting cast members like Justin Abdelkader and Darren Helm.

It’s what Ken Holland does best. It began with the ridicuous series of contracts for Dan Cleary and has continued to this day.

If you think this is bad, wait until Gustav Nyquist (on pace for a career high in points) gets an extension instead of getting traded.

This is in a nutshell why Ken Holland is awful and has ruined this team.  He buys high and sells low, as the article points out, Howard’s contract was an albatross and now that he’s having a good month of hockey in his last year of his contract the Wings want to re-sign him.  Yzerman cannot come fast enough.

They will never be able to sell higher on him then in the next 60 days, they would be insanely dumb to hang on to him.

Considering Holland will NOT let his team tank, I have yet to still hear about a better option than bringing Howie back.

Preferably, trade him at the deadline, then bring him back at a discount in free agency.

Are we still going with the “Holland is avoiding a tank” line while we’re 28th in the NHL with the 30th best goal differential?

This team is already terrible.  They should absolutely sell high on Howard who has been a below average starter on this contract.

Holland all on his lonesome is making the decision not to bottom out? Not the owner of the team who is sitting on a brand new arena that is 1/2 filled most nights, that guy doesn’t have a say in wanting something competitive on the ice sooner than later, its all on Holland?

Why can’t the option be the guy we paid $3M over 3 years to start with another teams younger cast off that might benefit from a last chance or change of scenery, like a Mrazek as an example, backing him up each year, maybe find something, maybe have something to trade.

That depends, do we conclude that the team that wins the Stanley Cup is the only one that was trying to win it?

He didn’t bring back Green, sign Vanek and give Bernier salary AND term because he’s trying to lose, he brought back Green, signed Vanek and gave Bernier salary AND term because he’s trying to win but doesn’t know how to do that in today’s NHL.

So many possibilities with this story. Howards agent needs Christmas cash and wants an extension so slip Khan a few bucks to get the ball rolling? Kenny is working the phones on Howard so to try and increase the asking price by slipping a story into the news the Wings want to extend him? There should be drug sniffing dogs brought into LCA because somebody is on drugs again?

Meh. Just means I need more beer to follow this team.
