What You May Have Missed Today

added 7:55pm, Yzerman also spoke at the Economic Club, watch below.

I am still under the weather but feel I don't want to play catch up when I do return.

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

There are a lot of unknowns regarding the Red Wings lineup heading into Tuesday’s game in Buffalo.

The Wings had an optional skate Monday, and many players stayed off the ice, given Detroit's schedule this week. After Tuesday's game the Wings play Thursday in New Jersey, Saturday in Boston and Sunday in Pittsburgh.

The Wings will get forward Anthony Mantha (punctured lung) back in the lineup Tuesday, but the status of forwards Robby Fabbri (jaw), Darren Helm (undisclosed) and Frans Neilsen (upper body) are unknown, said Blashill.

Scott Burnside of The Athletic (paid) took a look at all 31 teams at the trade deadline.

On the Wings,

The Tank Express is rolling down the track in Detroit with the Red Wings enduring one of their most embarrassing seasons since they were known as the Dead Things.

The draft lottery will tell the tale but a team this bad (they were on a collision course with a triple-digit minus goal differential as of the first week of February) deserves the first-overall pick, which will likely be the wildly talented Alexis Lafreniere.

As for the deadline, pretty sure GM Steve Yzerman would move any member of his blue-line corps outside Filip Hronek. But given durability issues and a lack of production, it’s hard to imagine much interest in guys like Mike Green or Trevor Daley et al. Same for Jimmy Howard, who has had a difficult season, although Jonathan Bernier, who has a year left on his deal, might be the more attractive play for a team looking for cheap goaltending depth.

In short, whatever answers Red Wing fans are searching for they won’t be found at the deadline unless Yzerman is looking to add some salary in exchange for picks.

What are the odds here Howard goes on a good little run after that CBS performance and bumps his value back up a little?

Pretty slim. There just aren’t enough games left before the trade deadline for him to prove he’s worthy of being a contender’s backup. The Wings would probably be better featuring Bernier and offering to retain some salary in a trade.

Yzerman said “process.”

Where are the pitchforks and torches?

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
