What Streak?  The Captain Says ‘Screw Your Streak’

Apparently, it wasn't even a consideration...not for them anyway.  For us? Oh yes.  We'll get to that, but to the 19 the streak was huge because it was so critical to the rest of you...the fans of every other team in this crack house of a pretend professional sports league.

Henrik Zetterberg let it slip last night, though, that the number 22 has little meaning other than a damaged wrist and maybe a quote from decades ago about shaking hands.

Primis said something early in last night's shine-soaked, barely coherent live blog..

It’s not even the Streak, Chief.

It’s about making the playoffs, getting a chance to still play while others are golfing and watching on TV, and rubbing it in the faces of clowns like NAS, COL, and hopefully MIN that they didn’t get the chance to.

It’s about maybe getting a crack to completely ruin CHI’s season.
It’s about vengeance possibly on the Poultry for That Game, you know the game.
It’s about not being ready for Tigers baseball just yet.
It’s about not being one of those markets for whom the NFL Draft is the most-important thing about this weekend.
It’s about beating down DAL one last time as a parting gift, just because they deserve it.

So many reasons.  And The Streak doesn’t need to be one of them.

I didn't get that when he said it and I'm still trying to figure out the difference, from a fan's perspective.  Streak continues: we're in.  It seemed that simple.

But it isn't, not to Zetterberg.  He doesn't give two shits about the streak, or his legacy in those terms.  All he wants to do is play serious hockey with serious stress with big chips on the table because that's what he was born to do.

"We wanted to play in the postseason and that's what mattered, we wanted to play playoff hockey," Zetterberg said. "I don't think we cared that much about the streak."

We did.  Oh yes, we did.  We cared passionately about it because so many others did too.  While Adrienne Dater simpers about his absolutely horrible franchise in Denver and fans from every other NHL city gnash their teeth, the Wings just move on to another postseason.  The consistency infuriates them.  It baffles them, scares them, enrages them.  But mostly, it's you.  They despise you.  Your arrogance drives them insane and it never ends.  It doesn't diminish because the Wings don't...stop...winning.  Ever.  They hate us in Dallas where the transplants took that place over last night.  They hate us in Anaheim, where Rummy already has perfect seats for Game 2 and will be joined by thousands of us, legions.  They hate us in Chicago because they know the standard and who's set it.  St. Louis, Nashville, Columbus, Minnesota.  In less than two minutes last night, Dave Strader called the Wings "arch rivals" of three separate teams.

You travel the blogosphere and you see the same types of comments:

'I have the utmost respect for the Red Wings as an organization. It's their fuching fans I can't stand.'

That's JJ.

At some point very soon we're going to start talking about the Poultry and our chances, and those chances will be good. The Wings will be first-round darling picks for the pharmacists.

But right now, it's time for every fan, every writer, every franchise who wished our team the worst? It's time for them to suck it.  Again.

The Streak continues and that's big.  The playoffs begin, which is bigger in the short term.  We've never entered a postseason with lower external expectations.  External.

Here, in the dark place others will point to as nothing but bluster and ego?  Here our expectations are higher because we've seen things over the last week nobody else noticed.  Here, deep in the comment sections where only you and I dare to travel, there are nuggets: the scoring averages of our three best forwards, the GAA and save percentage of James Fuching Howard and the real possibility that he's the best goalie in hockey right now, the relative ease with which the Wings have handled that bitch Corey Perry and his balding fat friend.

It's on now. It's on again.  For the 22nd consecutive season, the Stress Train awaits.  Seething and belching.

The Wings are in the playoffs because, unlike every other team, it's what they do.  Every. Single. Year.

It was never about the streak for me. It is simply about being in the post season, the playoffs. There are many of the 19 that know only 22 years of post season glory. Even if the Cup wasn’t won, the Wings were still in.

Then, there are some of us that remember what it is like to miss the playoffs. For years. Those old memories are what makes getting in so important.
Yes, the Streak is nice and all, but, is not what it’s all about. Making the playoffs is the goal, and, the tangible sign of hard work and dedication. Let’s see where it takes us this year.

We’re in. I say our chances are as good as anybody’s. Even if #12 has an * next to it.

Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!

“ar-ro-gance: an attitude of superiority manifested in an overbearing manner or in presumptuous claims or assumptions”

Fans of other teams hate because as seasons go on, what they deem “arrogance” isn’t less and less so, because it’s not so presumptuous and assumed… it’s more set in stone, not even written in pen on the calendar instead of “pencilled in”.... it’s printed that way from the manufacturer.

I really, really have always resisted the idea the Wings were the most-hated franchise in the league.  After all there were so many other hate-able teams with hate-able players that had to be considered first.  This year might have finally tipped that though.  This was supposed to be the year of the “correction”  The “humbling”.  The moment to finally kick the Wings while they were down.  Everyone… EVERYONE… waited years for Lidstrom to retire with the safe notion that when he did it’d immediately all fall apart.

It didn’t.  So now the Western teams have been or are going to get beat up on one more time and some might face trips to the Eastern timezone for the playoffs pre-SCF, which they thought they were safe from.  Again.  And the Eastern teams are now realizing that sh*t is coming their way to deal with next year.  So both conferences finally truly hate, and deeply.  Leafs fans are already practicing I bet, they know.

In another forum I frequent I was in a convo in thelast week about the Leafs this year and how they probably really feel pressure to perform and make a run because of their tough division next year and how they might not make it back, and I got laughed at that Detroit was anything but a bottom-feeder that was going to miss the playoffs.  That laughing, and the name-calling from Leafs, Bruins, and Sens fans, stopped even before last night.  The reality might be settling in

Don’t believe the whole “love the franchise, hate the fans” line.  It’s total B.S. at this point.  They effing hate the red and white, the winged wheel, and the banners hanging in the Joe.  All of it.  They’re sick of making up crap reasons why Jimmy Howard sucks and is a bust (still), they’re sick of not having anything to dislike about Pavel Datsyuk and having to swallow he’s probably the best player on the planet, and they’re sick that the entire org has not had to live in the same reality as everyone else.

Just don’t buy the B.S.  They hate you, me, Babcock, Holland, Nyquist, Dekeyser (they really hate him now), Datsyuk, Mike Illitch,  Karen & her anthem, Al Sobotka, the city, the state.  All of it.  Just pure hate.

That’s all I care about.

Henrik Zetterberg said “Absolutely,” before the game, when JR asked him if the Wings could do it again.

And then he smiled.

And now I’m smiling because the Wings are in and the jealous hate-fest against us is still going strong and all those bloggers who already had their articles written about how the Wings got eliminated had to start over.

Can’t wait for playoff hockey.

I think it important to note that in this new modern ruined-by-collectivism era of hockey, that this team continues to show that it is organIzational success that carries a team forward to a streak of 22…
In an era where the successful franchises forced to dumb down their business models so the losers could keep pace, the Wings still found a way to compete…successfully.
A HUGE junk of that success just left Detroit. Jim Nill cannot be replaced.

All aboard the Hasek…and the painful, gut-wrenching, torture that is watching Thid try to grow another mustache.

These athletes and players wanted it because they’re proud, competitive hockey players.  The streak was a side note for journalists and those who talk for a living because they can’t actually DO anything.

The notion that it was better for the franchise to shoot for a draft pick rather than make the playoffs was a bizarre one that never for one moment entered the minds of these players.  They know nothing other than to commit 100% to each other and the team, right now.  That’s why I’m a big fan of these guys.

Mike Heika of the Dallas papers said (expounding on what Zata was saying):

No, that came after the game when he was asked about keeping alive the playoff streak _ the longest current streak in North American sports. Was he excited? Was he relieved? What did it mean to be a part of history like this?

“We’re happy with the way we’re playing right now but, still, we haven’t really done anything,’’ he said. “We just made the playoffs. This is not the end. We have to play good hockey if we want to continue playing.”

Wow. “This is not the end.’’ That’s an interesting take. You kind of got the feeling that if the Stars made the playoffs, confetti would rain down from the ceiling and they would hoist another banner to the rafter. You kind of get the feeling that if the Stars made the playoffs, it would be “the end’’ for their team.

“This is not the end,” says Zata.  The Red Wings way.

If anything NBC did right last night, a sharp-eyed cameraman zoomed in on the Wings bench to get a picture of Zata and Dangles sitting next to each other during a break in third period action.  And it gave me bone-cold chills.

The score was already out of reach at 3-nil, but for those 12-15 seconds of an intensely focused Zata with one hand on the bench wall and Dangles checking his taping on his stick and his skates, it was one flood of Yzerman-esque memories.  Zata had The Look in his eyes that he’s fuching serious now.

When we won the first of our four game streak I was elated, filled with excitement and proud. As we won each successive game I was still happy but it started to settle in: it’s buisness time boys. This is what our team plays for. This is why we watch hockey. The real season starts now and any pride you feel at just getting in should be cast away like the useless piece of trash that it now is. It’s great to know our captain feels the same way. Feel pride when we cook the poultry to a blackened crisp and begin our “farewall western conference” march towards 12. <L.G.R.W>

A big part of the reason people hate Wings fans isn’t that it’s arrogance (which can be annoying but it’s hardly Detroit-specific) for something that not only they have nothing to do with, but it’s that if things had gone as those same fans wanted it wouldn’t have even happened in the first place.

It’s the ignorance combined with the arrogance that really frosts people.

They read people who call themselves Wings fans grousing and whining about one of the best coaches in the game or one of the best GMs in the game right before that same fan writes a two paragraph screed that distills down to ‘neener neener’ and they think ‘Holy hell, those bleeping dopes don’t deserve that team’.

And they’re right.

Like Mr. Munny said, though, ‘Deserve’s got nothin’ to do with it.’  Detroit provides a great organization which provides a great team regardless of how smart or stupid the fanbase is, or how farsighted or myopic the fanbase is.

Detroit fans were born on second base thinking they hit a double and then they spend lots of time making fun of people who have to kill themselves just to get on base, occasionally taking a break to complain that the organization didn’t let them start on third.

Granted, that’s a generalization.  Not every Wings fan is a frontrunning idiot with as much sense of perspective and class as Kim Kardashian.  Heck, probably not even most Wings fans.  Just a majority of the Wings fans who are online, though.

One of my BEST Red Wings moments was watching Game Seven of the West Finals in 2002 in a sports bar in SFO.  The Dive fans outnumbered True Believers by at least 3:1, but the handwriting was on the wall by the end of the second period.  So, when the game was well and truly in hand… about the time Roy was chased… this Dive fan pulls his Roy jersey over his head, threw it on the floor and stomped on it… to cheers from our table of Dee-troit expats and the rest of the bar, too.  Beautiful.
