Want A Cup Of Joe?

Updated at 0141 15 Feb Carrier Standard Time: Herm asked in the comments below if I have a comment regarding a certain player I won’t type the name of who currently resides and plays in a certain pisspot of a town south of the border.  No comment now. No comment tomorrow or ever until providence delivers that big horse to our door.  I’ve jinxed so much for so long.  No. I won’t say it.  But, please, Tick Tock…just this once. Get Dombrowski on the phone if you have to. There. That’s all I’m gonna say about Rick Nash.

Win or lose tonite against the Original Bubba, one thing can’t be disputed: no Red Wing team has ever been as dominant at Joe Louis Arena as this team is right now, or has been this season.  Back when the 19 was just a gleam in the eyes of sinister bastards like RWBill and the elusive Gramps, the Joe was a house of sin.  Poor pathetic little sisters like St. Louis and Denver, Nashville and San Jose (remember when they couldn’t win a damn thing in our Manger?) feared the Joe because they knew they’d leave soiled and violated.

The last few years saw a change in that, though.  In dark corners of The Hasek we talked amongst ourselves and whispered the bad things. We wondered about motivation and grit and, ugh, leadership…as if we know a damn thing about what it takes to lead a hockey team. Oh, don’t get all redolent on me.  We all talked about it, and I probably spewed that garbage more than most. We wondered about The Swede and our Uncle Mike.  The last two years the Wings won more than they lost at home but big frigging deal.  Plenty of teams win more than they lose at home.

But the Wings haven’t dominated at the Joe like baby Jesus promised us they would.  Last year Detroit won 21 games at home. An interesting number considering what they’ll try to accomplish tonite…in February.  Think about that. Detroit goes for their 21st straight victory with two months left in the regular season. The streak itself would equal the number of games they won at home last year: period.  ‘09/10? 25 wins.  23 already this year.  27 home wins the year before that.  A number this year’s team should surpass no later than early, early March.

Something’s going on with this team, this year. Krupa, with his vocabulary, noticed it yesterday and wrote about it in between sonnets and Latin classes.  In yet another article that has me warily wondering if maybe he can’t be coined the new Anti-Digger, Krupa tells us this might be Detroit deciding getting booed in their own barn is just not the Wing way.

But the will to please their fans, or, at least not to hear their displeasure, merely underlined an imperative realization. To play deeper into the playoffs, the Red Wings had to correct their problems at home.

There it is.  Oh, dealing with the boos sucks I suppose.  Although when the drive home takes you to million dollar mansions I kinda think the displeasure of the fan base is softened a bit.  No, Krupa nailed it when he told us the real reason:  if glory is to rest where we know it belongs, then winning at home is the only sure-fired recipe.  Home ice advantage. Not just in Round 1 or 2.  But 3 and then, by God, 4.  You want San Jose again?  Nifty. I’d like that too.  But I want them at the Joe when it matters the most.  Bow down to Gordie before you take that ice for Game 7, Joe.  Bow, bitch.

Streak or no streak.  Home ice all the way through is the ultimate goal.  8 wins at home in the postseason and we’re talking a real strong parade possibility.  10 and you can pack your coolers for a long, blissful day in downtown Hockeytown around 10 June.  Home ice is what we need and it’s the decree that rules all others.

Here’s a few other ditties, just to show you I pay attention:

Hank Zetterberg can go scoreless every game though mid-April. I don’t care.  He can float and he can coast.  Back check if he feels like it.  Shoot twice a game, all from 20 feet out. I don’t care.  I don’t care as long as Playoff Hank shows up when he’s supposed to.  I think he’s earned that.  I think he’s earned that benefit of the doubt.  I know what February does to us. I get it.  We stress, no matter what. Best record in the league. Greatest display of home dominance in hockey history.  Best team defense we’ve seen in three years.  Best goaltending we’ve seen since 2002 and probably even before that. But we’ll bitch because it’s all we know to do in February. The playoffs are too far away and too much can go wrong.  We were born to stress and stress we shall.  But until Henrik Zetterberg proves to me that he doesn’t have what it takes to lead this team when it matters the most, I’m inclined to cut him some slack.

Tick Tock Kenny Holland is not going to deal for a backup goaltender. Not now. Not in two weeks and, get this, not in two years.  Joey MacDonald’s your backup goalie for the long-term future.  If 15 million’s the number Holland has to spend at the deadline (and I saw that somewhere but have no link or any idea if it’s accurate. I may have dreamt it) not a cent is going toward a goaltender.  He needs a sniper and he knows it.  I’m still thinking it’s Selanne.

Finally, compared to special teams performance the identity of our backup goalie is a frigging speck in the milky way that it is the brain of one Michael Ophelius Babcock.  If that power play doesn’t get going and I mean going at a clip that sends sick chills down the spines of potential playoff enemies, nothing’s gonna matter anyway.  I don’t care what Boston did last year with their garbage power play.  The Wings are built to make dirty teams pay dearly.  Guys are gonna get run and the man-games lost are gonna be disgusting come May if power play goals don’t start becoming the norm instead of the exception.

It’s a Live Blog, bitches. And we’re running it way early so Primis and JJ can start anew.  You know the kids get scared when mom and dad are fighting.

21’s a nice number but flip that fucher around so we can let the puppies loose on Woodward.

Wings have three days of rest before facing these same fleet-footed NSH mutherfuchers But they do, too.  It will be a monumental war of attrition on Friday night.

Bring it.

Holy…  21 is a single season record, but it’s not the all time record for consecutive regular season home victories.  22 is.

The Bruins closed the 1929-30 season with 20 victories at home and then won its first two in Boston the following season.

1-8-1 in their last 10.  They’re not suffering so much as completely collapsing.  A grand epic spectacle of horrendous failure.

Right, monkey, and the NHL does not consider streaks split over two season to be consecutive streaks.

But to paraphrase what you said, Wings should just win 30 consecutive games at home and be done with the bitching.

I did not get a chance to see this part since I was away for a short while having dinner but youtube user, weallbleedredd, posted a video of Homer at center ice being recognized for his 1,000th career game with the Wings as well as the team’s gift of a snowmobile during practice.  Homer wiped his face after receiving the snowmobile from Zata.

Why I love this team so much.

Oh, yeah.  Homer’s wife is hawt.

I like the “Win 30” idea. The record is awesome, but I damn sure don’t want those chitlin’ eaters from Nashville being the ones who pop the bubble.

Understatement of the decade. She should be the new “April in the D” girl.

*  I love Emmerton.  Kid seems to be willing to do anything asked of him.
*  I’m really starting to worry about Pavel.  The slashing and stickwork he takes is only seeming to increase.  It’s seems inevitable that someone breaks his wrist or something unless the refs start calling that sh*t.
*  Is there a sane and coherent argument against Helm being the single best PKer in the league?  I ask that seriously.
*  This PP is getting stupid.  0 out of 5 again?  What’s going to happen is that the playoffs will come, and teams will just absolutely maul the Wings because they won’t be afraid of their PP.  VAN, SJ, CHI (oops wait, they’d have to MAKE the playoffs first!), STL… they would all willingly play dirty if the Wings can’t make them pay for it.  This is single biggest problem haunting the team right now, and the single biggest obstacle between them and a Cup.
*  Brad Stuart saved yet another probable goal.
*  Ericsson was a -1 on the game, the only minus on the team.
*  Oh God… Lost Bert seems to be back again.
*  Hudler has 18 Goals now.  If I told you in the preseason that Hudler would score 18 in 82, would you have been Happy with that number?  How about in November?  And we’re not to 82 yet.
*  LOLHawksAgain.  1 point out of 18 now and counting.
*  I still don’t see why DAL keeps Steve Ott around.
*  Kari Lehtonen is really good.  I hope DET doesn’t see DAL in the playoffs because he’s that type of goalie DET traditionally struggles against come playoff time.
*  Mike Ribiero still needs a sammich or 3.

Haha well half of it was sarcasm, so bring it on! RWBill can take the other side too.

I actually like Vonnegut, just don’t love him because he’s only a “good” author and not a great one. I read Abbatiore V and thought, “yeah, I probably could have written that…but would I be as famous?”

Is it okay with everyone if our post-game JJ-Primis Ericsson-Franzen discussion is replaced by why Vonnegut’s mediocrity shouldn’t be venerated to the level it is?

Ericsson gave the puck away to Loui Eriksson while playing too aggressively on the wrong side of the ice. He didn’t get back to cover the net-front far post quickly enough to make up for the mistake either. Jonathan Ericsson is most of the reason the Wings didn’t get a shutout last night. There’s nothing to defend about that.  It’s also too nitpicky to point out that Detroit was actually 1-for-5 on the power play with any conviction.

I like Vonnegut much more as a writer than as a person. I find this true of most writers though. I’d say he’s above mediocrity though. The guy’s not Joseph Heller.

Though I realise not every book can be The Count of Monte Cristo and not every author implementing sex and aliens can be Robert Anson Heinlein, I just don’t understand the passionate, cult-like following Vonnegut garners. It’s as though his books changed the way people think about human conflict. Which, if you hadn’t read much before or after him, I guess it could have. Maybe it’s the Russian literature I’ve read so much of that ruins any attempt K-V makes at trying to tell a sad story seem so lacking in understanding of the bigger picture. I shall also put Catch-22 a bit higher on my to-read list based on JJ’s comment there.

Ericsson wasn’t stellar last night, but neither was Kindl. Kid turned the puck over in the defensive zone a few times and I even saw Ericsson with a good skating move to take the puck out of the zone once. Does this mean we’ve solved the Ericsson discussion? Let’s hope not.

Also, Jiri Hudler should shoot more. A lot more.

Well, Rosby is just down the road from Sandusky’s kingdom.

My first car, after driving my parents’, was a red ‘74 Ott.

One of my parents’ cars was a burgundy ‘63 Galaxy 500 V8 352.  Late one late summer evening after taking my older sister back to her apartment in Saginaw, my brother forgot to zig and zag at the county line between Saginaw and Shiawassee counties, where the road zigged and zagged.  We plowed through a sign and ran down a ditch about 50 yards.  The car was never driven again.  Actually he didn’t as much forget as a car didn’t dim its lights and hid the offset of the road.  the next thing we knew we bottomed out and the road was actually a grassy ditch.

it is common in mid-michigan at the boundaries of all the counties, and townships within the counties, for the roads not to line up, and have about a 10 yard offset.  surveyors weren’t exactly spot on, and the roads have never been realigned to make up for the surveying misalignments.

Nash to Detroit?  I will shatter my own dreams here, never happen as long as there is still a salary cap.

Two reasons.  $7.8 M Cap Hit.
And, $7.8 M Cap Hit for at least 6 more years, 2018 is as far to the future as I could see at cap geek, it looked like there could be more.

Getzlaf, and Perry, both carry $5.3 M for an additional year, so could fit around our cap space next year, without giving Stuart a raise, so that sucks.

Selanne $4M prorated the rest of this year, UFA after that, or retired, so there’s the better deal of these 4.

StL is in a perfect position to throw out huge amounts of money.

Anybody that wants a “difference maker” (which I think is as mythical as the unicorn) is going to have to pay a heavy price to acquire him. Is Nash a difference maker?  Maybe.  Is he worth the price he’ll command?  I’m not convinced.  I was early on the Selanne bandwagon but he only moves if he’s going to retire and wants a last shot at a Cup.  What do we give up?  Kindl and a pick?  Two picks?  I want him but a rental is a rental… you don’t sacrifice the future for a rental.  If everybody stands pat I like our team against any other.

I’ll ask it:

I don’t watch CAR (because why would I do that to myself)... but what’s Ruutu’s game like?  I know he’s hurt now, but he’s coming back right around playoff time I think…. his trade value to CAR might have just taken a hit for teams that want him in the lineup right now, so he might come cheaper than before.

I see he has 17 G, 13 A, and a +3 on a not-good CAR team.

Just throwing out more-reasonable ideas than the pipedreams from ANA and CBS everyone seems hung up on.

Bah nevermind, I keep forgetting Karamanos is involved.  He’d never do a deal with DET, ever…
