Videos- Winning With Dylan Dylan McIlrath In The Lineup And The Talk Today

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Dylan McIlrath racked up 49 fights in juniors, 62 bouts in the AHL and dropped the gloves 11 times in his first 43 NHL games.

It’s easy see why flying fists come to mind when many think of the 6-foot-5, 231-pound defenseman.

But McIlrath hasn’t needed to fight in his brief time with the Detroit Red Wings. They value him as more than an enforcer.

The Red Wings are 8-2-2 with McIlrath in the lineup, between his recall late last season from the Grand Rapids Griffins and the past six games this season due to their injury-riddled blue line. They face the Ottawa Senators tonight at Little Caesars Arena...

Let’s hope not too much, because leaning on players to do more than they’re capable of doing has been an ongoing problem in the Wings’ recent history.

Ted Kulfan on the return of Ericsson and an update on the injured players.

Nemeth is the closest for a return.

Dana Wakiji of the Wings website,

It seems there is always a lot happening with the Red Wings defensemen the last couple of seasons.

The defense corps was ravaged by injuries last year and that pattern has unfortunately continued into this season.

Filip Hronek, who has missed the last two games with a lower-body injury after blocking a shot in Anaheim Nov. 12, took part in the optional morning skate and said he hopes to play against the Ottawa Senators tonight.

“We’ll make that decision after warmups tonight,” Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. “I think the biggest thing is he needs to be able to go out there and look like he’s at full speed. That doesn’t mean that you feel like you’re at full speed but nobody in the building can know he’s not. So we’ll see.”

Maybe this article will squelch the “he’s a dinosaur and an enforcer isn’t needed” crowd for a little bit. He also plays well and should have received a call up last year much sooner. There is a reason he was a first round pick. He just isn’t flashy or as fast but gets it done.

So glad the Deep Diggers are keeping me updated on when I can expect Trevor Daley back , cause I’ve been on the edge of my seat in anticipation….

Meanwhile, last year’s #6 overall draft pick has dropped off the planet like a Bermuda Triangle sailboat…..and we get nothing but crickets….... sick

11 pts in 16 games for 3rd on the Griffs in scoring, and now apparently injured.  He’s not lighting it on fire, but he’s not faltering now either.  Just steady as she goes.  Not sure what more there was to report on him until he apparently got injured TBH.  He started slow, then picked it up a bit.  Not huge fans of any of the Diggers or anything, but they report regularly on DET, not GR.  Zadina becomes a story for them when he gets called up, basically.

Primus, thanks for the info, but I was being sarcastic about Zadina. I wasn’t being sarcastic about no update to his health. Nothing on the AHL site, nothing on Griffin’s Twitter, nothing from the Detroit media.

I get this is Detroit and not Toronto, but if the leafs #6 overall pick had sustained an injury…. apparently ??...I’m pretty sure some news would be leaking out.

This kid is kind of important to the Wings going forward, and the team is stonewalling the fans and media…...

It’s nice to see a player who looked like his last shot
in the NHL might have been his brief stint in Florida
after the Rangers moved him, actually steadily focus
on improving his game and eventually get another look.

McIlrath seems to understand that continual work on his
skating and using his body to gain a bit more time and space
is the key to being able to play his game.

It really doesn’t hurt to have seriously tough player his size
available, especially when he can actually defend and kill penalties
and brings a positive attitude.

It’s especially nice to see a Boston player flattened in front of our
goalie, actually allowing him to cover the puck, instead of them getting unlimited
whacks at the puck until it goes it.

If you ived here in GR and followed the local media, you’d know that the Griffins are not a priority of the local sports media. I’ve seen whole Sunday editions of the Press where there wasn’t a single word about the Griffins. Kahn(!) writes five times as much about the Wings as he does about the Griffs. It’s kind of sad, actually.

There have been a number of instances this year where the “old” McIlrath would have jumped into a tussle and started throwing punches. This time around he seems to be a lot more mature. And he looks like he’s trimmed down a bit. He looks more “athletic” than before. It could be why he’s playing the best hockey I’ve ever seen out of him.
