Taro Hirose has some familiarity with playing at Madison Square Garden. He’s just hoping this time he can finish the game.

Hirose, a former Michigan State hockey star forward, will make his NHL debut with the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday when they face the Rangers (7 p.m., Fox Sports Detroit). He signed a two-year, entry-level contract last week.

Hirose skated on MSG’s ice last season with the Spartans against Minnesota but suffered a shoulder injury in the first period and was forced to leave the game.

“Fingers crossed,” he said after practice on Monday. “Hope it doesn’t happen again.”

He’d much rather make a positive first impression. The 22-year-old Hirose led Division I this season with 50 points.

“I think the first couple of shifts I’ll be a little nervous but once I get into it, I’ll just try to make plays like I normally do,” Hirose said.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome: wphoulihan@gmail.com
