Kevin Allen of Detroit Hockey Now,

Nick Leddy appears to be getting the first shot at being the first defensive partner for Detroit Red Wings much-talked-about rookie Moritz Seider.

Coach Jeff Blashill has them working together in the first couple of days of training camp in Traverse City.

“It’s a pairing that we could potentially use going into the season,” Blashill said.  “We want to go through some exhibition games and see. It was a starting point for us. Part of it is how good does Moritz play in terms of what type of minutes they’re going to see.”

If DeKeyser is healthier and stronger and more mobile
on both legs, he makes sense as an experienced defensive safety valve
for Hronek, who needs to play fewer minutes anyway.

This is quite an early vote of confidence for Seider who hasn’t disappointed
at any pro level so far.

Stecher and Staal and Osterle as a fill in with
Lindstrom looking for his chance to break in.
Lindstrom can’t avoid waivers and his being protected
says a lot. Same with Givani Smith.

Meanwhile, with Vrana, this is why Bobby Ryan is around in camp.
The big thing Ryan said he focused on the prior offseason was skating and quickness. If his hand and bicep are healthy that’s great. But how is his pace?
Smarts and anticipation - knowing where to be - can compensate for some of that.

I’m guessing Stephens and maybe Rowney make the team and Veleno starts in GR.

re: Seider

This is what the Wings did with Larkin; they gave him the tough assignments in preseason to test his readiness. Seider might have a tougher time on the defensive side, but we’ll see.

Seider is so calm in his style.  He’ll be fine until a Tom Wilson or Ryan Reaves type comes along and then we’ll see how he keeps his calm.
