What Athanasiou’s improved play does is give Yzerman options. He already has made three trades — for Fabbri, Brendan Perlini and Adam Erne. Those were minor moves, but Yzerman was adding guys he wanted to a roster he inherited. Athanasiou, 25, is a 30-goal scorer with a career 0.53 point-per-game average who could yield a top prospect to add to the rebuild.
