I’m starting to wonder if Mule isn’t done in Detroit.

I always thought a big part of why he’d never be bought out was his great cap hit, but six more seasons of this just doesn’t seem feasible. With his personality type he also doesn’t really seem to bring any veteran leadership or intangibles to the locker room. Hrmmm.

Hmmmm…........ where do you see this Wings team RIGHT NOW, with Hossa subbed in as Mule?

Curious….

Same place I see them with Weber subbed for Kindl. AKA, a rewriting of actual history or a figment of our dreams if you will.  smile

He’s crashing faster than Valverde’s career folded. It’s not even sad.

Garth mentioned this yesterday and I was thinking the same thing: The Hossa for Mule talk is kind of old news. Fact is Hossa hasn’t been a big playoff performer either. I think Hossa is a better player but swapping him in for Mule doesn’t change this team much imo. It’s also just a bad comparison because Franzen’s cap hit is really not bad at all. Hossa makes over a million more against the cap, which would make a difference on the team’s makeup.

Well, from 2009-2013 Hossa has played in 54 playoff games and scored 12 goals whereas Franzen has played in 39 playoff games and scored 13 goals, so…

Garth,

Also, it’s worth mentioning that Hossa went to a team with a core that was just entering its prime.  Him staying in Detroit wouldn’t change the fact that it’s a team in transition, looking for an identity as the “core” is its best players age.

That is, having Hossa instead of Franzen wouldn’t have sped up Nyquist, Tatar and Smith’s development, or slowed Datsyuk, Zetterberg and Lidstrom’s aging.

A couple things.

1) I mis-typed.  The numbers were 2010-2013, which is the four playoffs directly following Hossa leaving.
2) Why should they be adjusted?  The point that everyone is making is that it would be better if Detroit kept Hossa instead of Franzen, so complete playoff runs from 2010-2013 is where the relevance lies.
3) You know what?  f*ck it.  2011-2013, as requested.  Hossa had nine goals in 36 games whereas Franzen has had seven goals in 31 games.  Well now, would you look at that?  Hossa’s 0.25 goals per game absolutely TOWER over Franzen’s 0.225, right?

I would imagine that Franzen could be traded for something of value, given his stats and cap hit. A buyout doesn’t seem to be the logical route to go.

Geebuz, can we drop the Hossa talk?  If memory serves me (and I’ll admit it doesn’t always) the Wings couldn’t afford what Hossa was demanding even if they didn’t sign Franzen.

But in any event, what the fuch does it matter now?  We know Mule has been a let down, but it doesn’t help to compare him with other players who might or might not have played for the Wings.

I’m just glad that Babcock is calling him out.  It may be a signal that he won’t be around next year, which wouldn’t bother me a bit.  He’s been streaky, at best, since 2009.

Why don’t the Wings retire Bourques number?

Garth remember the 2009 playoffs when Hossa pulled his magical disappearing act and was outplayed and outscored by then-rookie Darren Helm? Hossa is vastly overrated.

Excuse me TK remember when Hossa was thoroughly outplayed by then-
rookie Darren Helm in the 09 playoffs-Hossa disappeared completely-was as effective as Franzen is now. Hossa plays well when he has loads of support players setting him up-feeding him the puck. Hossa excels at scoring when it doesn’t matter (see 2009 playoffs)

Helm’s rookie playoffs were actually in 2008 where he scored 4 points in 18 games. In 2009 he scored 5 points in 23 games.

Not only did Hossa score 15 points in 23 games – including one game winning goal – in the 2009 playoffs, but he also underwent surgery to repair a tear in his rotator cuff and required four months of recovery right after the 2009 playoffs ended.

Not bad for a gimp.

How does the cap recapture in the new CBA relate to Franzen’s contract?  That’s what terrifies me: he decides he’s had enough and retires, and the Wings get their cap nuked as a consequence.

It depends when he retires.

However, if he’s smart he’d work it out with the Wings, tell them he’s done and they can use a regular buyout on him, that way the cap hit would be smaller and he could still get some of the money left on his contract.

I’m drunk as *#$%@&, but Franzen…

... *#$%@&… *#$%@& you, man.

Eat a giant, Swedish dick.

You’re a dogdamned professional athlete, and “earn” more money in half a season than most hard-working, struggling people do in their entire working lives.

All you rich, entitled, athlete motherfuckers need a little perspective. You’re playing a *#$%@& game, For a LOT of real money.

Get some *#$%@& perspective.

No. The Wings should use their final compliance buyout on Franzen.

I don’t care how ridiculous anyone thinks that notion is.

If he retires under contract, the Wings are *#$%@&. If he’s traded (noooooooooooooope) and retires, the Wings are *#$%@&. He’s been declining for the last couple of years, and has been injured a lot of the time as well.

Buy him out.
