Uncle Mike: Top Two Lines Are Best The NHL Has Ever Seen

No. He didn't say that.  Not even to Helene via text or message over the PS3.  But this will be cool for the three days Babcock actually keeps the line together...

Babcock said he'll use his two-best players, Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg, on the same line at the start of the season, which is expected to begin with games at St. Louis Jan. 19 and Columbus Jan. 21, barring a change in the schedule.

“They've been playing (in Europe) and they're in shape,'' Babcock said. “They play good together. Last year they started out slow, never got going.''

He said 26-year-old rookie Damien Brunner will start on that line. He's the leading scorer in the Swiss league, where he has formed great chemistry with Zetterberg.

And, just like all 19 of us, our Uncle is absolutely convinced Johan Franzen will be ready to go right from the jump and sustain a high level of play through August 11th when Gary says the Finals will end.

Valtteri Filppula, who's expected back soon from his sprained knee, will center the second line with Johan Franzen and Mikael Samuelsson. Filppula is coming off career highs in goals (23) and points (66). Franzen has scored 57 goals the past two seasons but has been inconsistent. The club is hoping Samuelsson, back after leaving in 2009, can make up for some of the offense lost with Jiri Hudler's departure.

“That gives us two Grade A top units,'' Babcock said. “Zetterberg and Datsyuk are going to be a tandem, as will Franzen and Filppula. The wingers can rotate.''

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, we find that Johan is actually 35 pounds overweight and is suffering from a nasty case of bedsores.

Bleacher Report also did an article exploring the Wings’ cap situation in the upcoming offseason in which they said that the Wings wouldn’t have as much space as it seems because they have to resign both Filppula and Brad Stuart.

Agree.  Detroit essentially doesn’t have any cap space.  They’re at 49 mil for next year with 15 signed.  Among the unsigned is Howard, White, Cleary, Fil, and Brunner.

Cleary’s not getting 2.8 again, but everyone else on that list is likely going to get a raise of some kind.

That may be true for following seasons - - but they have a shit ton for this year.

I wonder what 20 cent was doing the past few months?

Odds to win the Central - and they aren’t high on DET.

Nashville Predators +550
Detroit Red Wings +300

Capgeek has them at 45M in cap payroll which would mean $19M to sign 8 guys.  Not a huge amount, but they’re hardly strapped.  Gus, Smith, Kindl and Mursak are RFA and of them Smith likely gets a decent raise (especially if Gus stays in GR and Mursak stays in the 13/14 spot on the forward roster).  Filppula and Jimmy get raises.  Miller should get a raise but nothing huge since he’s probably on the 4th line this year.  Cleary’s got to be done if only because they have to shed roster space to fit in Gus (nevermind if Tatar or Ferraro are ready to take the next step.)  Also, Andersson is an RFA so he might wind up in Detroit next year.

If I’m not mistaken, 49mil is salary payroll but not the cap number for next season. According to capgeek.com we have 45mil cap number, which gives us 19 mil to sign our FAs.

FYI. I just called DirecTV, and talked to Jasmine about the Center Ice package. As soon as she purred “My name is Jasmine, how can I help you today?”, I immediately began thinking of several ways that she might be of service, none of them involving hockey.

What is it about a woman named Jasmine? Jasmine, a real name, not a stripper name. It just dances in the imagination. I was putty in her highly trained, very capable hands. She highly recommended that I maintain my subscription, and who am I to question Jasmine?

So, see ya at the Live Blog.

Oh, it costs $60.

Jasmine recommends it.

Jasmine, Chiffon, the mind wanders.

So $60 or $1.25 for a 48 game schedule, x 30 teams, but lets be real, how often do I watch much of other teams games?

Last couple of seasons it was what, $149 for 82 games, or upwards of $1.75 per game?

So the rate is down from last year, still I wish they’d gone down farther, like Jasmine.

The Stanley Cup Playoffs are intended to finish by about June 27,  followed by a draft and free agency in the next several days.  Talk about compressed.

This will allow for about the normal “every other night for two months” that a team has to play to get through the Stanley Cup gauntlet.

Luck, refs, and injuries will still be the primary determining factors.

In just one short week by next Sunday morning the Red Wings will have a whopping one game under their belt, and in this blog we’ll either be cussing that the season is lost and the Wings suck, or they looked like budding Stanley Cup champions.

A2Y, Welcome to the Hasek.

Between the end of February and end of April the Wings will make 5 trips to the West Coast, counting the Pacific Division NHL’s franchise in PHX.  100% of Eastern Division teams will never leave their own time zone from now until the Stanley Cup Finals in June, and hopefully then they won’t leave the ET either.

Imagine a hockey team never leaving the time zone for 5 months.  I cannot.

Well, time to get the bacon and IPA done before watching some basketball and maybe football.
