Tick Tock’s Summer Just Got Hotter

Updated below (@1310) after I had a chance to think more about the Semin signing, and get angrier.

On the contrary, I feel we should all freak the f**k out.

And no, I’m not kidding.

Semin’s off the market and our Tick Tock’s in deep trouble.

The details are right there in front of you, so I won’t re-hash them.  You’ve read it all summer, after several months of virtual guarantees from Ken Holland that this wouldn’t happen.  You can go along and get along all you want, but the fact remains that—at the most optimistic—this is the worst period in Wings history since pre-Yzerman.

And, you’re damn right, I’ve elected to lose it.  Now, don’t get scared. My family’s safe. The law hasn’t been called.  All is well, relatively speaking.

Suter, Parise, Semin: gone.  All the UFA defensemen: gone.  The second tier forwards: gone.

Nash: traded, but not to Detroit.  Weber: offer sheet tendered, but not by Detroit.

No, this is not a sign that the Wings are no longer a destination of choice.  This is, very simply, a failure by management.  Abject, absolute, asinine failure.  This summer has been nothing short of incompetence.  Holland knew Lidstrom was leaving and did nothing, and that’s a very raw but true statement, to compensate. Not replace, just compensate.  And it’s his job to do so.  Failure.

Shane Doan is no longer a nice-to-have.  He’s now a necessity.  Not just because the Wings need his grit, leadership, scoring.  Ken Holland needs that signing to rescue his own credibility.  Doan needs to happen to save this fan base from implosion. And if you think Holland doesn’t realize that, you’re mistaken.

Semin for 7 is gross.  But it’s one year.  I wonder if he would have taken 6 per year for 2 years?  Well, Kenny?

Something’s broken in Hockeytown and it’s turning what should have been a glorious summer into a steaming pile of horse shit.

It’s down to Doan, Kenny.

And, oh yeah, it’s not like Stuart’s departure was a surprise either.  Garrison, Wideman, Carle, Salo….gone. And we’ve got what as our top pairing? Kronwall and….White?

If this is true….

Khan(!!!)

Semin’s agent, Todd Diamond, told M-Live.com that he had only one conversation with the Detroit Red Wings.
“It never got serious with them,’’ Diamond said.

Hi. That’s just negligence. If that’s true? Negligence.  At this stage Ken Holland didn’t have the luxury of selecting only those players who “fit the Wing mold.”  No. At this stage it’s down to signing talent to short-term deals and hoping they adapt.  Never got serious?

Oh, it’s motherfuching serious now isn’t it?

One consolation in this Summer of Ass Pain?  Only this: nobody in the Central has done jack squat either.  Stagnancy and ineptitude all around.  Hooray for the Norris.

Whatever.  I’m not giving up but I’m not giving in.  Doan signs in Detroit I’m happy as a school girl. But if he signs elsewhere, there’s going to be a change in tone around here.  Kenny’s gonna have some explaining to do and I don’t really give a shit if his impotence this summer has been out of caution due to a new CBA.  Labor strife didn’t stop Fletcher or Rutherford or Sather.

I wouldn’t mind picking up Colaiacovo, just because it’s fun to say.

‘We’re waiting on Doan, will consider Semin after he decides.’

(Semin signs in Carolina)

Hours later…

‘Doan isn’t an option anymore, asking too much’

...and Wings have nothing, no top 6 forward signed, no top pair D-man signed, none of either left on the market.  But hey, we still have the cap space for at the deadline when Kenny always makes a bi…oh, right.

Sammy had 7 fewer goals in 23 fewer games than Semin.  Let’s not pretend Semin is the answer to any of Detroit’s problems.

Nothing like cherry picking stats from the worst season of a guys career, eh?  Look at every other year Semin has played.

Referring to the most recent season is valid if it’s a full season, which it was.

Chief, you’re probably not through writing for tonight if Aaron Ward (Via George Malik) is correct.  It makes sense that Doan would not want to play on a Western Conference team against his former franchise.

I’m calling this one Bring Mike Knuble home, Kenny: TSN’s Ward says Wings won’t bid for Shane Doan

by George Malik on 07/26/12 at 07:38 PM ET

What the title says, given what TSN’s Aaron Ward is reporting regarding the Red Wings and the Shane Doan sweepstakes:

Aaron Ward

@aaronward_nhl
All indications Detroit #RedWings out of Shane Doan sweepstakes.Asking price too high. #NHL #TSN

Again, asking price too high?  Would they have signed Tootoo if he’d insisted on $2.0 instead of $1.9?

out of that particular list the only 2 D men I’d even consider would be Colaicavo or Barker. Barker can be a mean sumbeetch to play against.

Holy Jebus. In my entire tenure as a hockey fan I have never seen Detroit as irrelivant as I am now. No panic, you got some solid dudes, but having to sign Holstrom because all others walked elsewhere.. WTF. And my beloved Flyers list Weber but still sit on a decent core. I’m mad for you. But I’m more mad at the Phag from Philly trolling your story Phuk him.. He doesn’t represent us. Although I do get a glimmer of happiness for shutting the LOD out of Cup greatness.

Trade you Datsyuk for Holmgren. Dude has balls and a kickin crewcut.

even THAT won’t happen!  We’re going with an undersized Swiss League sensation.

Not really when you consider last season was an anamoly if you look at the rest of his career and also considering he’s not in a decline based on age. I could see using that if the guy was 35 and you could project a continuing downward trend.  Every player in the league has a poor year or 2, and last season as poor as it was by his standards compares to a guy like Franzens normal seasons.  Fact is Semin averages, including his down year last year (I’m omitting his rookie year since it was short and was 3 years before his 2nd season) 37 goals and 39 assists (76 points) over an 82 game season.  But yeah, that wouldn’t help the Wings at all.

OK, AFTER picking up Nash’s $7.8 salary, the NYR can pick up Shane Doan at another $7.5M and still would have $6M in cap space with 21 players signed.

Can we even put the cap management of the Wings in the same ball park with the NYR, as unlikely as that would have sounded a few years ago?

Technically, that’s the wrong question, the Wings cap management is great, we’ve got $13M in cap space, so there’s that.

I think Kenny is in a secret contest as to who can have the largest 50 man roster with the lowest possible cap hit.  That has to be it.

A few weeks ago they called it “accumulating assets”.  But if they add Knuble they will have a bunch of “assets” of the type that no one would trade anything of value for.

Guys you’re forgetting about Damien Brunner. One of Kenny’s signature “low risk, high reward” projects has to work out eventually right? Right?

“And St. Nick riseth in the third month, the perfect human and savior of Red Wings”

It’d be just like him.  James Bond and shit.

I’m with you on Barker, he’s the only name on that list that interests me,  Caoaliaidco kinda does, he played bigger than he is against the Wings last year, has a nasty streak at times.

Watch him trade SJ for Doug Murray, good lord.  Though that’d work out perfectly for Smith, he’d never get caught since Murray’d always be plenty far behind the play.  Clears the front of a net I guess.

I was really hoping we’d snag Souray as an “aquiring assets” type deal in case something like, well, this happened.  Guy had a BOUNCE back season last season and his willingness to due time in the minors and work his way back says tons.  Great for the PP.

ah well.

Personally I would go for Roszival, Foster, or Hannan, in that order.
But also Gilroy, Campoli, or Clark as a gamble on a puckmover.  Mostly cheap deals with little risk.  Really wouldn’t be surprised to see this when the prices come way way down.
Really doesn’t fill the holes, but Roszival at least is top 4.  Probably wants 6 mil nowabouts though.

Martinek was actually one of Cbus’s better defensemen last year until Helm gave him a concussion.  Probably best behind Tyutin til that point.
