Tick…Tock?  Holland’s Missing The Boat.  Again.

It's not even close.  Ray Shero is so far in front of Ken Holland (and everyone else) that the discussion isn't even worth having.  Here's what he does: he evaluates his team and determines whether they're Cup contenders, or not.

Ken Holland does the same. Even ground.

Shero, and Holland, annually determine that their teams have realistic title hopes.

Here's where the roads diverge.  Holland "kicks tires"...yes, I'm sure that means "every tire". Got it.

And while Kenny's kicking?  Shero's dealing.  Think the Wings could have used Brenden Morrow?  A little toughness with scoring touch, a veteran with fire up front?  No? I'm sure you're right. Pittsburgh gave up a great prospect in Joe Morrow, plus more picks.  A steep price.

They're closer to the Cup than we are, you're saying.  Got that too.

But were they last year, or the year before?  Because Kenny's done a lot of kicking and come away with some sore toes and nothing else.

Ray Shero landed Doug Murray today.  Another great move.  Big, tough d-man.  Kenny got us Kyle Quincey last year.  A huge move, comparatively speaking.  And then he went out and brought us Carlo, who's played one game.

Since 2008, Ray Shero has not slept. Not a day.  Marian Hossa, Bill Guerin, Steve Sullivan, James Neal, Kovalev, Adams, Kunitz, Vokoun, Gill, Dupuis, Satan.  There's more.

Since 2008, Kenny Holland has signed Marian Hossa.  'Member that?  Great signing.  Good thing Hossa's agent called first.  We might still be kicking that tire.  Since then?

Not much.  Lost a lot of talent and lost a lot of ground.  Nick Lidstrom retires (suddenly, I'm sure) and what's been done?  What effort has been made to compensate (not replace, just compensate)?  Quincey, Carlo? Really?

Shero is in a constant improvement mode, consistently adding pieces because he feels his team is that close to winning.  Big names are out there and Shero lands them.  Every year.  You think he's done? Think again. They've got prorated cap space to burn, just like we do.

Holland may feel this isn't the year to deal, that this team doesn't have a shot with or without Iginla, Boyle, Campbell, Yandle or whoever.  So he'll sit tight. He sat tight last year, and the year before that.  Helm will be his big deadline move and then get hurt again immediately after, if he's back at all this year.  Either way, Tick Tock "likes his team", boy.

You know who else likes his team? Ray Shero likes his team. A lot.  Every year. That bastard's working it. Dialing and dealing.  Kenny's kicking tires and waiting for the summer.

Because that worked so well last year, right?

I wondered when Håkan Andersson would come up.  That son of a bitch didn’t scout Lidstrom!  This is his team, not any of the ones before!  Christer Rockstrom won all those Cups!

Unless he trades White and Flip for some picks I think he should stay pat till this summer. That being said….
Sooooo…. what exactly has Holland done to address the Wings glaring needs the last two summers? Chased Suter (over-rated as hell) all the way to Minny while missing out on a couple good D-men, signed White, Samuelsson (again for god knows why), Carlowhatshisname, Tootoo (which was probably Babcock begging him for someone who actually has a little grit and will “keep the flies off”) and Brunner (good pickup). All the while losing Rafalski, Lidstrom, Hudler, Holmstrom and Stuart. I don’t know, fellas, me thinks the Wings of old woulda addressed our deficiencies a little better than that.

From wiki:
Besides Holmström, Franzén, Datsyuk, Ericsson, and Zetterberg, Andersson has also been responsible for the selection by the Red Wings of Niklas Kronwall, Jiří Hudler, and Valtteri Filppula, among others.[23][24] In 2008, the Red Wings’ top five post-season scorers (Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Franzén, Kronwall, and Hudler) had all been scouted and recommended to the team by Andersson.[25]

I miss Happy and that p-shop of all the laughing Hudlers.

Excuses, excuses.

Hmm.  I don’t really intend them as excuses. I do think it’s something to consider, though.  The NHL put the Wings in an awkward spot for wheeling and dealing this season.  This isn’t to say it’s a valid reason to do nothing.  I will be sorely upset if Filppula isn’t extended (<4) or traded by the deadline and that’s just for starters.  I used to be a Holland apologist and to some degree I will still admit that I think he was in a terrible position last summer trying to make the huge splash but not having a backup plan better than Coalawhatsis is pretty inexcusable.

No one is going to give a top 4 D-man with a great breakout pass to the Wings at the deadline, not at a reasonable price anyway.

The Dallas Stars just got one and only had to give up a player who IMO has clearly been on the decline for the past several seasons now.

Am I pissed that Kenny didn’t land Morrow?  Hell yes.  Just not THAT Morrow.

Joe Morrow is not a top-four D-Man yet and the Stars also had to trade down in the draft to get this prospect who isn’t ready for that kind of responsibility.

I know you didn’t, but to me it’s just defeatist.

People keep saying that nobody wants to deal to the Wings, nobody wants to help the Wings and blah blah blah.  I see those as nothing more than excuses and don’t buy them.

There’s not a single GM out there who is trying to help any team but his own (can’t even exclude Yzerman…Holland may have wanted Quincey, but Yzerman must’ve fallen over himself to get a first rounder in exchange for Steve Downie).  Nobody’s trying to help Pittsburgh or Boston.  Calgary’s not trying to help anyone else but themselves by trying to deal Iginla.

If every one of us fans can clearly see that Detroit is not just one or two players away from being a true contender, then why would they be scared to trade to us?  And why would any Eastern Conference team be afraid to trade someone whose contract is ending to us?  If they’re going to lose a guy at the end of his contract then why not deal to someone who isn’t a conference opponent right now?  There’s not guarantee that any rental who is traded will re-sign with their new team.

It’s just a collection of lame excuses.  Everyone has a reason why nobody will trade to Detroit, as if Detroit has been a powerhouse at any point since 2009.

The NHL put the Wings in an awkward spot for wheeling and dealing this season.

Even if I did buy that as an excuse (which I don’t, because the Wings have been lobbying for this since Toronto moved East, so they have nobody to blame but themselves), that’s an excuse that’s valid for the past month and a half.  What about the last few offseasons when he did nothing?

Joe Morrow may very well turn out to be a very good offensive defenseman, but at least right now, has some significant issues in his own end.  He was a healthy scratch at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton eight times this season.

It was for that reason that he dropped to the Pens’ 4th best defensive prospect this year, behind Harrington, Pouliot and Maatta,

I wish him the best, but I don’t think Pens management currently regarded Joe Morrow quite as high as others have since the trade was announced.

There’s no way that’s right Tony.  Teams only trade players when they get your best prospects back, usually all of them.  For us, any trade involved Nyquist, Tatar, Smith, Jarnkrok, Pulkkanen and 2 roster players to get a top 4 D or gritty winger.

All I can say is that it was pretty widely reported that Morrow’s defensive play had gone down a notch or two since he started in the AHL…..
