The Detroit Red Wings Continue To Work Hard

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

During what’s been a struggle of a regular season, the Red Wings showed some character Sunday against the Capitals....

“We showed unreal work ethic and fight,” coach Jeff Blashill said. “There’s pushes back and forth. They’re a good hockey team. From the middle of the first period to the end of the second, we were excellent. They pushed hard in the third but we even had moments of good push back.

“You don’t want to give up the lead, obviously, but it’s something we’ll keep working on. You want to learn those lessons when you win.”

Blashill has stressed about the need for his team to embrace being a hard-working, grinding team and they largely were in these two strange road games.

“We have to be a work ethic team and we did a good job of that throughout the game,” said Blashill, who also liked the “character” and “mental toughness” the team showed. “We have to keep working here and getting better in areas and make sure we have to same work ethic every night.”

The win improved the Red Wings’ record to 6-9 in overtime — but only 2-8 in the 3-on-3 overtime (they’re 4-1 in the shootout).

Had the Red Wings been able to just win a few more of those overtime sessions, they would be looking at a more realistic playoff possibility.

If they were .500 5-5 in the 3x3 that’d only be 3 more points, still a ways out behind several teams, and they’d still be the same team on the ice.

( I was told there would be no math ! )

If they were

When a team starts the sentence with “what if” is already a losing mentality imo. If we scored more goals than our opponents in 10 extra games, we would be in the playoffs now.

For a long time the Wings had a hard time to score 3 goals. Now, when they finally are able to score more than 3, they can’t hold onto a lead. At least Blash said they would work on it. I think the team is working hard but I also think they need more talent. Simple as that.
