The Detroit Red Wings Are In The Windy City

So let's hope the Wings have the wind to their backs during all three periods.

The Blackhawks are being questioned by Coach Q regarding their intensity while Coach B is trying to find healthy players.

Detroit may be catching the Blackhawks while they are slumping, but Chicago went through a hard practice yesterday and say they are ready to bring their 'A' game tonight.

No doubt, it will be a hard game for the Wings to win, but...

... If the Wings can score early, it will put some doubt in the minds of Chicago and their fans.

The Wings need to play every shift like it their last shift, go to the net and again, get the puck out of their own zone, no turnovers!

It's a live blog on a Sunday night bitches, nothing better to do than watch some hockey.

Hossa is good. Devastating shot.  Fast skater.  PK.  Protects puck.
We’ve got Franzen.  Slow.  Loses puck.  Good shot when set up by teammates.

Shut Whore Mouth.

Hossa again the playmaker on both ends.

I should post my “Elephant in the Room” essay from October 2008 on why to sign Hossa over Franzen.

I’m not blaming him 100%, but when your team is crippled and can’t score to save their lives, it sure makes goaltending a hell of a lot more important.  And when your goalie is around 45th statistically in a 30 team league (and makes 5.3M per year) he’s gonna take some heat.

It was a joke, especially after that last goal where it was basically a 3-0 against Howard with Mule deflecting the puck in for good measure.

The Wings as they stand now would need a Hasek or Roy in their absolute prime to have a shot. Wings were lucky to get ONE goal tonight that bounced off of Seabrook’s (?) feet twice before going in the net.

Jimmy is having a bad year statistically, but this team is total garbage right now thanks to injuries. Not much to do with that in my opinion.

Jimmy Howard is what he is—which probably would have been good enough on the great Wings teams of the 90s and early 2000s, but he’s never going to be “the man” who puts a team on his shoulders, stands on his head and steals games.  That’s just not who he is.

EXACTLY.  But that’s what we should be getting for 5.3M per year.  My point has always been that he is no where near being an upper echelon goalie and Holland made a six year mistake with his contract.  Howard is the same, unorthodox, sporadic, inconsistent goalie I watched never win a thing for four years in GR.  I just don’t want to watch his futile efforts for another 5 years, but I think his contract will be Luogoian in trying to move him.

I agree WW. Jimmah is not a goalie to steal a playoff series. A game or 2 maybe.

RW Hossa had a busted shoulder that took him out for half the next season. It was kinda a crap shot that worked out for the Cawks. We try it with Weiss and so far, has bit us in the ass. Just sayin

I don’t disagree with anything you said.  The failure falls squarely on Holland for way over-paying for a good/above average/competent (pick one) NHL goaltender.  Howard has a ceiling.  That ceiling has been reached.  He’s not a $5mil+ goalie.  I have a hard time blaming him for taking the money, an easier time blaming management who get paid handsomely to make these kinds of decisions.

Agreed.  Can’t say luck hasn’t played a big part in the downward slide of the Red Wings’ fortunes.  The organization has had an inordinate amount of shitty luck the past five seasons or so.  Injuries, bad bounces—you name it, we’ve seen it.

I agree 100%, WestWing.  I do not fault Howard at all for taking the money.  The days of Al Kaline turning down $100,000 contract because he wasn’t worth it, are over.  Jimmy’s gotta grab the big payday when it’s offered.  But now, the Wings (Holland)  must take action to make him the most overpaid backup goalie in the league.  I’d like to see Mrazek back in GR for one more year, for playing time and developmental purposes.  But I do not want to see Howard getting 60 to 65 starts next year.

So, here’s hoping Howard makes me eat my words.  I’ll gladly apologize if he can turn things around.

Dave Strader used to do Red Wing games, he’s very good.  Engblom… not so much.

I was so giddy about NO EDZO but then heard his voice ackkkkkkkkkkkkk ...  well it was better than not having to listen to Olchuck whine about all Detroits interference.  Thinking our letter writing campaign did some good.
Only thing I got about the game is ... Kenny better not keep Q for next season. and the refs sucked as usual when we play the Squawks

The Wings are sliding into mediocrity.  Certainly injuries have played a part but they just are not included in the top ten teams anymore.  It had to happen sooner or later.  The offense will be fine as the kids are going through “growing pains” and learning how to win.  The defense needs an overhaul badly and if not addressed in the off season the Wings will barely make the playoffs next year.  Jimmy needs to be pushed harder and Gus needs to stay away from injury to push him.  I agree Mrazek needs another year in G.R. to develop.

I agree Hossa is an awesome player but he wouldn’t have stayed here anyway ... he saw what the NHL was up to,  might as well go to Gary’s next “it”  team that gets the cup handed to them more often than earn it.
Franzen has been playing hard lately he may not be as talented but I can’t complain about as long as the effort is there.
