Steve Yzerman Stays Quiet During Zoom Call With Cole Perfetti

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

During the NHL's Zoom calls in lieu of the annual combine, Yzerman kept his screen dark and his microphone on mute. Kris Draper, the Wings' director of amateur scouting, led the questioning.

“I’ve met a couple times with the Detroit Red Wings over the break,” Perfetti said Thursday afternoon via Zoom. “With Mr. Yzerman, it’s been limited. He’s been on all the calls, but for the most part he’s had his camera off and very quiet, just kind of listening and taking notes. He didn’t really ask anything.

“I just tried to be myself, show my personality, and hopefully he enjoyed that and got a lot out of that. I hope I made a good impression.”

Perfetti comes across as personable and professional, and his hockey prowess has him ranked No. 5 among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting. Perfetti lit up the Ontario Hockey League in 2019-20, recording 37 goals and 74 assists in 61 games with the Saginaw Spirit. He played both wing and center, though he said he prefers center because he feels he makes more of an impact in the middle.

Parrying a question about his size — he’s listed as 5-foot-10, 185 pounds — Perfetti noted that “the way the game is going, you have to be a quicker player and think the game at a very high level. That suits me very well. That’s what makes me the player I am.”

from Pat Caputo of 97.1,

Since the Red Wings have had a glaring problem moving the puck since Nicklas Lidstrom retired, there was an early presumption the best defenseman available is their logical pick in this draft.

But it doesn’t appear as the best draft for top-end defensemen.

Jamie Drysdale from the Erie Otters of the OHL could be the exception, but it’s debatable whether he belongs in the Top 5 overall because of the quality forwards available.

Drysdale draws comparisons to Hughes because he is an elite skater and not big (listed at 5-11, 170 pounds).

However, he is much stronger than Hughes at the same age….

Raymond is a small winger, but with an exceptional feel for the game. Holtz is the best pure goal scorer in this draft. They have held their own taking regular shifts in the AHL-level Swedish Hockey League.

All things equal, I think the Red Wings should draft a center in the first round.

Perfetti would be ideal. But if Yzerman went defense, who could argue based on what has been demonstrated in the Stanley Cup playoffs?

from Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun,

Go ahead, call Cole Perfetti a nerd.

A hockey nerd, to be exact.

Perfetti, one of the top prospects for the 2020 National Hockey League draft, is cool with it.

“I would agree with that strongly,” Perfetti said. “Ever since I was young, I was always the kid who would go on Youtube on my dad’s computer and look up hockey highlights, best goals, shootout goals.

“I loved watching hockey and if I couldn’t watch live games on television, I would resort to Youtube. Hockey is pretty much my entire life.

“I enjoy breaking down what the elite players are doing and what makes them so successful. There are so many resources you can use.”

Cole Perfetti looks like he’s 12 years old in that picture.

Ted Kulfan with the top 5 prospects Detroit could target with the #4 pick.

No need to do a new post on this since most of us have heard the same names for a month now.
