Sides Still Trying To Figure Out Where Filip Zadina Will Play If Not In Detroit

from Gregg Krupa of the Detroit News,

Where can Zadina play in 2018-19?

We will know if a few weeks, maybe.

A bunch of lawyers are working on it.

At issue: Is Zadina a European player, or is he a Canadian major junior player?

The key, GM Ken Holland told The Detroit News on Friday, is the agreement that got Zadina from playing in the Czech Republic in 2016-17, to the roster of the Halifax Mooseheads, in Nova Scotia, in 2017-18.

Different NHL eligibility applies to European players and players in the Canadian Hockey League (CHL), a major junior association for 16- to 20-year-olds.

And, whether Zadina is a European player on loan to the CHL (the umbrella organization to which the QMJHL, the Ontario Hockey League and the Western Hockey League belong), or officially a CHL player will determine his destination, should the Wings not retain him on the NHL roster after training camp.

How about we just make this whole argument a moot point and put and keep him on the roster?

Sink or swim.

Honestly, if this could-have-been-a-#1-pick-in-almost-any-other-draft player doesn’t make the roster, after dropping like he did in the draft, may sour him to the point of wanting to escape. No idea if he’s that moody or short-sighted, but I’d rather not find out due to Kenny’s ineptitude.

Interesting turn of events. As much as I agree with the sentiment of having him on the big club regardless, it would undoubtedly be beneficial to be able to send him down to GR if necessary.

Have to take back my previous scorn on the scouting staff for not knowing the particulars.Seems more complicated than I thought and depending on the details may be a win for Kenny

Huh.

I really hate the rule, and always have, that it’s NHL or major junior for these guys. He may be great, but you can’t tell me he wouldn’t benefit from half a season in the AHL before playing in the NHL.

Yes, being almost completely reliant on dumb luck instead of research and preparation makes him a genius.  A real formula for success.

Does it matter, or did it matter when they drafted him?

No.  They took the best player/talent.

So what exactly does it matter, and what exactly was DET supposed to do differently?  Are you saying DET shouldn’t have taken him?

Exactly. They will figure it out. I am hoping he does make the Red Wings. What a sniper. gulp

Wait, so you’re arguing that he’s smart for not knowing which team he’ll be sending Zadina down to in October?

I’d say that’s a low bar, but it’s really not a bar at all. It’s just a line drawn on the floor.

I guess in hindsight maybe they don’t sign a FA winger if they know they can’t send zadina to GR… but he probably still would have

Whether he’s eligible to play in Grand Rapids or the Q is a moot point, the fact that he is not penciled into the lineup is a disgrace.  The only reason why fans would even entertain following this team is because Ras and Zadina are the future and playing big minutes.  No one cares or is the slightest bit interested in Vanek or Green, neither of those guys will sell a single ticket.

I dont think it’s about whether we should’ve drafted him but whether we should’ve signed Vanek assuming we can send him to the A.

Nothing to do with drafting him.

Zadina or Vanek being here in 18-19 hardly makes a difference lol

Tell me if this sounds familiar. A team with a superstar center signed to a long-term contract makes some free agent moves and signs a few veteran to help speed a younger group—some with considerable potential—-to competing in the playoffs again. They draft a top prospect with superstar potential and the fan base clamors for him to be immediately inserted into the lineup. Yet, the coaching staff knows he needs a bit more time in the minors. And the future coach of the team was an associate coach to start the year.

Oh course I am talking about Tampa Bay, but I would understand if you thought I meant the Wings.

Substitute Stamkos for Zadina and Vanek, Green, and Bernier for Olaf Kolzig, Radim Vrbata, and Mark Recchi and the similarities get eerie.

Barry Melrose was forced by ownership to play the recently drafted Stamkos (which he did for about 11 mins a night) and the result was a 2-5 record where Stamkos was held pointless for the first 7 games. Stamkos scored a goal the next game but went another 14 games without the next one. 15 games into the season Melrose was fired and said,

“Steven is going to be a very good player…right now he’s just not strong enough to play against defensemen who are [6’3” or 6’4”] that can skate as good as him.”

Melrose was replaced by Rick Tocchet. Stamkos scored 6 goals in 45 games which lead to him getting benched a couple games because Tocchet said he needed to play stronger. His minutes were increased eventually to about 20 a game, but it was only after the NHL All-Star break that Stamkos started scoring 17 in 34 games.

BTW, Stamkos was 5’11” and 178 lbs when measure at the draft combine, 6’0” and 183 lbs in training camp. Zadina is 6’0” 192 lbs.

So, I would say yes this GR or Halifax issue is not this minor little issue based on recent history and I caution everyone here to lower their expectations on exactly how fast a recent draft pick can accumulate to the NHL level of compitition.

This should be fairly simple. The DRW need only buy out Zadina’s remaining contract from whoever holds it, and then sign him to a new pro contract; enabling them to assign him wherever his playing level warrants.

I’d love for Zadina to play in GR, just to let us tank another year and separate him from Ras. Do we know if his entry deal still slides if he’s in GR?

I miss the days where the wings could go to Europe with bags of cash and make things happen
Something tells me the NHL would frown upon that now.

They shouldn’t have signed Vanek regardless because it’s not what a rebuilding team does.  Zadina plays no role in that.

Agree. Larkin and Mantha deals should have been inked first. We already have plenty of veteran presence….

Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!

Found my answer - A player can play in Juniors or the AHL and have their ELC slide. Slides are most common for Juniors players, but can also happen with some European players that are eligible for the AHL as an 18 or 19 year old.

So yes his contract slides if he plays in the AHL too. All the more reason we need the NHL to say he was on loan to the CHL.
