Seider Will Play In Germany And Kotkansalo In Finland

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

Concern over the coronavirus pandemic has prompted the Detroit Red Wings to loan Moritz Seider to his old German club.

He’s not the only prospect who may have a change of address for the 2020-21 season.

Seider, who was general manager Steve Yzerman’s first pick in the 2019 draft, at No. 6 overall, has been loaned to Adler Mannheim with the understanding the Wings can bring Seider to Detroit when it looks like they will have a training camp in advance of next season. The NHL is tentatively hoping to start games Dec. 1.

“It’s a very fluid situation, but our agreement is we can recall him any time,” assistant general manager Ryan Martin told the Free Press on Monday. “We think he’s in a good spot — he’s on the ice, he’s practicing with Mannheim.”...

The pandemic prompted defenseman Kasper Kotkansalo, a third-round pick from 2017, to decide not to return to Boston University this fall, and instead stay and play in his native Finland.

Reading way, way between the lines it sounds like
the Wings told Kotkansalo he wasn’t so high on the chart
among prospects and to do what’s best for himself,
rather than take direction at their behest.

Having said that, the top Finnish league isn’t a bad
place to keep developing as a physical defenseman
against men. So who knows…

I don’t think it’s that: he’d be playing at BU if not for COVID-19. So what are his choices now: Europe or NA. The OHL is looking at Nov, Dec, or Jan start dates depending on where pandemic level is at. European hockey is starting in Sept. That makes it easy for a prospect to decide to stay home and play especially since he hasn’t yet signed with the Wings. They have his rights until Aug 15, 2021. Until he’s actually under contract with them—they have no say in his decisions.

There is also something to the depth chart issue too. He has a lot to overcome just based on where he was drafted and what the Wings currently have (not to mention those 2nd’s this coming draft that could have him fall farther down the depth charts)

LHD Prospect Depth Chart
Dennis Cholowski (2016 R1#20)
Jared McIsaac (2018 R2#36)
Albert Johansson (2019 R2#60)

Joe Hicketts (their AAAA player)

now add in DeKeyser who has 2 years left and will be 32 when he hits free agency. Patrik Nemeth who has 1 year left and will be 29 when he becomes an UFA. Both could easily be around another 4 years if they choose to re-up with the organization.

Kasper Kotkansalo looks like a 3rd pairing stay-at-home d-man and currently he sits as the #7 LHD on the chart—he doesn’t need to consult anyone. A quick glance at capfriendly tells him all he needs to know: his career will probably be limited to Europe.

In Detroit media news, both the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press will be starting a digital subscription service on August 12th.

via the Detroit News,

While much of the newspaper’s breaking news content will remain available for free, some of the unique, in-depth and original stories will be available to subscribers only, he said. The special introductory rate of a full-access digital subscription will be as little as $3 for the first three months.

“We need our most loyal readers to support the reliable local journalism they’ve come to know and expect,” Miles said. “Long-term, revenue from digital subscribers is an essential part of maintaining our place as the most trusted news source in Michigan.”

Paid digital subscriptions are coming to the Free Press, beginning next week.

Starting on Wednesday, Aug. 12, several stories will be marked each day as “for subscribers” on freep.com.

In order to access those stories, a digital subscription will be required.

I don’t see both the freep and Detnews surviving in the future.  And if advertising isn’t enough- the very few subscriptions they will get won’t be either.

Yeah I know the college guys from Europe are mostly having
those collegiate seasons disrupted due to COVID.

Just thought Martin’s choice of words was pretty interesting.
He wasn’t signaling a whole lot of commitment or focus re: Kotkansalo

I think Lefty is spot on about his thoughts on the Martin and Kasper exchange. There is no reading between lines here, Martin is.being very clear and not mincing words. That’s good for the kid and the team
