The Detroit Red Wings are expected to announce an extension for goaltender Jimmy Howard this week.

The one-year deal is expected to be in the $4 million range. Howard turns 35 on March 26, and a one-year deal offers little risk for the Wings. If he plays well, he’ll get another one-year extension.

The Wings don’t have a goalie prospect ready in the organization. Howard has given them steady to stellar goaltending the past three seasons. From the 2016-17 season through 2017-18 season, Howard accumulated a .915 save percentage and 2.63 goals against average. He has been one of the Wings’ best players this season, better than his .907 save percentage and 3.07 goals-against average through 47 games reflect.

The extension shores up the Wings' goaltending through next season, as Jonathan Bernier has two years left on his contract.
