The signing shores up the goaltending through next season, as backup Jonathan Bernier has two years remaining on his contract. It was an expected move as the Wings don’t have a prospect ready in the farm system. Howard has been vocal about his desire to stay with the only NHL team he has known, and hopes to help them back to the playoffs.
“We want to be playing in April,” Howard said after Wednesday’s practice at Enterprise Center. “It’s great that that was added on to it, but I’m just happy to be here."...
“He’s given us real consistent good goaltending,” coach Jeff Blashill said. “I’m real, real happy for him. He’s a great example for a lot of other guys in the room of going to work - when things were down, he didn’t say woe is me, he didn’t complain. He looked in the mirror and said I have to be better. He got better and he’s been really, really good for the last number of years.
“When you go out and look at the goalie market, he gives us as good, consistent goaltending as anybody that’s potentially available and I think it’s great he’s re-signed.”
