Question Time

Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press answers questions from the fans.

Fist question, is Zadina a bust?

Only elite players — think Connor McDavid, Auston Matthews — make an impact right away. The Wings drafted Filip Zadina at sixth overall in 2018. Five players drafted after Zadina are with their NHL teams right now, and only one of them has made an impact. Defenseman Quinn Hughes had amassed 10 points in 13 games with the Vancouver Canucks (who selected him at seventh overall) before sustaining an injury. The rest are recent call-ups or fill-ins for injured regulars.

Do the Wings wish Zadina was further along? Of course. But team personnel is pleased with his progress with the Grand Rapids Griffins....

Next question, when do the prospects appear with the Wings?

From talking to people in the organization, my sense is they believe the prospects are where they belong, in the AHL. Michael Rasmussen (who is day-to-day with an upper-body injury) was having a nice start to the season with two goals and five assists in six games. He isn’t likely to be called up unless the Wings need a center — the organization wants Rasmussen to get comfortable at that position at the pro level. He played center in juniors, but played on the wing last season with the Wings. Evgeny Svechnikov (five points in five AHL games) is someone I could see being called up mid-season if there are injuries — he’s a year behind in development because he missed all of last season recovering from a knee injury, but he has looked good and he plays with an edge. Until Zadina dominates at the AHL level, he’s better off there....

more on each of the above and another question too...

Let me see here, you pose possibly changing the roster and have no idea of the potential of these players unless you assume Blashill is getting the most out of these players. Even worse you want players in there that Jeff can coach. A good coach is able to coach and get the most out of the players he has, otherwise you’re constantly chasing your tail trying to draft, trade etc to get players Jeff can work with. Wow

There is no way in hell this is true.  Not saying they are worried yet, but there is no way they are happy with a 6th overall with his scoring pedigree not being able to pick up regular points in the minors.

Maybe HSJ was reading last year’s notes on Zadina.

A 2nd year player in the AHL needs to show more than he has at this point of the season.

His talent may be there somewhere, but his drive and understanding on how to get to the NHL needs a big step up.

The opportunity is there, but he is not taking advantage of it.

—-Maybe he is just not that good.

Regarding Svechnikov, I liked what he showed in limited minutes in NHL this season.

The fact that Yzerman has signed forwards Fillapoola, Ehne, and Perlini indicates his evaluation of the Wings’ forwards prospects for the next year, and it isn’t optimistic.

Bill, imagine the reaction if Kenny made those same moves.
