Positive Takeaways

The Wings are back at home which means a normal start time for most of us. The West Coast trips are tougher to stay up and watch for a few of the older members of the 19, but, we hang right in there and hold our own. There are definitely some positive takeaways from this short trip out West. The Wings didn't fall apart and crumble when they were down by a goal. They stuck to it, fought back, and, managed to salvage four points out of a possible six. The new additions to the lineup Fabbri, and Perlini are looking like smart moves, Athanasiou is getting his game back in order, and Hirose notched his first goal of the season after sitting out a few games. Dare I say McIlrath is having a positive impact?

To be sure, we're not talking Playoffs here, just some watchable Hockey from our favorite team. For the 19 it's still all about having fun.

The Hasek, lol.  Very fluent in his brand of English.
Somewhere there is a picture of him sitting on the floor of the shower with his legs straight out almost at 180degrees, yet leaning forward with his hands wrapped over his toes.  Freakishly flexible but it’s because he trained at it.

Thanks Stoney.
Yes I agree, I miss the Chief Houlihan, guess he is retired from the military now, maybe living in Florida?  I know him and Paul Kukla from mlive Wings blog from the early 2000s.  They both left for their own projects b/c mlive was juvenile in a juvenile way, and still is, not juvenile in a mature way like we are here.

I would have loved to have seen a group interview of Hasek, Holmstrom & Datsyuk. Google translate wouldn’t be able to keep up. smile

I loves me some Ozzie!

Me too - Met him at one of the red and white games in GR. He was the nicest guy for taking pictures with him and stuff. I was really impressed.

Poor Ozzie getting ribbed cause no HHOF. It really gets my Irish up. I loves me some Ozzie!

I wouldn’t put Ozzie and Hasek on the same level goaltender wise. Hasek was a brilliant goalie. As Ozzie said he’s the Gretsky of goaltenders. Ozzy was a very good goalie wherever he played but falls just short of HHOF.

George Malik had a side column in mlive,  IWOCPO and Paul (rw1) were commenters on mlive but didn’t have columns.

Holy crap, batman.  Down 3-2 just like that.

It’s a challenge for the Wings to stay competitive with these upper echelon teams.

I still prefer to think that goaltending is the most important position. Very seldom do teams win a playoff series without strong goaltending. If the goalie in your end isn’t outplaying the guy at the other end you are going to have a lot of trouble. You need a good defenseman, but the most important player is always the goaltender.

-Scotty Bowman

I agree about Ozzie and Hasek being light years apart. Hasek is great. Still, Ozzie was in it to win it and he did. Even coming in to rescue Hasek in 2008. He’ll make it to the HOF it will prolly take as long for him to get there as it did Vachon.

Dang, I’ve been harping all year aboot the oppostion routinely being inside our defenders right in front of our goal.  Chilowski was almost there, but almost wasn’t good enough.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
