One Bad Contract

from Dave Stevenson of PuckProse (Fansided),

Detroit Red Wings: Justin Abdelkader

Contract: $4.25 million cap hit over the next four seasons; Full no-trade clause until 2020, modified no-trade clause (depending on if Red Wings make playoffs and playing time) through 2023

The Detroit Red Wings used to be the model of consistency in the NHL. In order to remain that way for a few more seasons, general manager Ken Holland signed a bunch of bad deals. None of them look worse right now than Justin Abdelkader’s.

According to Evolving Hockey, his -1.4 WAR was not only the second-worst among all Red Wings skaters, but it was also the eighth-worst in the entire league (minimum 800 minutes during all situations).

continued plus one bad contract for every NHL team...

“There could be a way out of it, though. Abdelkader’s full no-trade clause (how in heaven’s name did he get one?) runs through the end of the 2019-20 season. After that, he has what might be the most interesting modified NTC in the NHL – Abdelkader can be traded to any team if either of these two conditions are met.
*Red Wings don’t make the postseason
*Abdelkader is not in the top nine among Red Wings forwards in average TOI per game”

He left out one thing; who the hell would take this contract on???

Dog, probably a team looking to take on a forth line player who has some leadership skills, playoff experience, and could use a player who can spell.

Stevie will find a way to trade him. I know this because I’ve seen Stevie sit in the smoking section as Max and Erma’s in Birmingham.

Don Luszczyszyn of The Athletic basically went into the same topic as the post, but in much more detail…

Last, and certainly least, it’s Detroit. How could it be any other team? With four contracts in the D-range on the books, the Red Wings are in a four-way tie for the most bad deals in the league. Where Detroit differs is that the other teams have a few more above average deals to offset the pain. Not Detroit who have as many toxic deals as above-average ones. Those belong to Dylan Larkin, Anthony Mantha, Tyler Bertuzzi and Andreas Athanasiou – four forwards that provide the bulk of the team’s on-ice value. Without them, this team would be cooked.

The biggest issue for Detroit is how much the team is spending for a marginal win over the remainder of their contracts. It’s not just the alarming number of poor deals, or the certainty in how bad those deals are, but the fact that those deals are mostly for players that bring huge negative value. The team is spending $14.5 million per win, the league’s second-highest mark.

more ($$$)

Yes, Justin is hard to spell. : )

Have you been to Rialto Beach in the Olympia National Park? If you have not, please do it. Take some fungi with you if you are inclined.  smile  It’s one of my favorite places in the world. I think it’s the best beach on the west coast. Even better than Bannon.

Tre, the year was 1994.

Dog, I prefer Shi-shi beach. We usually go around the solstice because it takes all day to get there from Seattle. And yes, I do carry a few stems.

Did you ever go to the enchantments?

What an amazing out clause. Way too late in the contract that wa trash from the start, but still.

Yzerman should send Abby to the AHL to clinch this.

I remember when Holland was asked at the time of the contract why 7 years, seems too long, he said something along the lines that for 5 years it’s a great contract and then who knows what will happen in years 6 and 7, that’s too far down the road. I am also curious where were all these analysts the day this contract was signed. Most of the fans were critical from day 1, not 4 years after the fact.

You have very good taste! Love both those places. The Hike from Shi-Shi to Rialto is a fun one. A semi laborious 3 hour hike or so, but just amazingly beautiful.

Some of the lessons to be learned from this analysis:

- avoid signing a goalie to term of more than 5 years. Let them walk if they demand more. The one exception might be for younger goalie and a team whose competitive window is just opening.

- avoid signing players over the age of 30 to longer term deals

- avoid signing 4th liners or non-top pair defensemen to high dollar or long-term contracts

More times than not big mistakes are made during free agency for the “top” players. The best moves are the smaller deals made to fill out an already established roster.

In retrospect, the playoff streak may be one of the worst things that ever befell this team.  Holland and others thought it was incumbent on them to do everything in their power to keep the streak intact even though by doing so, they mortgaged the future.  While Abdelkader’s contract may be the most egregious example of overreach, it’s far from the only one.  Every year we hung onto the playoffs by our fingernails probably added two years to the length of the recovery.
