Oh...Really?

ESPN’s Scott Burnside had this to say about the Stars having to deal with Brendan Morrow’s long-term knee injury,

He re-established himself as one of the top leaders in the game by scoring big goals and bringing a big, physical game every night. His loss is on a par with the Detroit Red Wings of old losing Steve Yzerman, the Carolina Hurricanes losing Rod Brind’Amour or Calgary losing Jarome Iginla.

On par with losing Yzerman, eh? Interesting. I wonder about that, considering the Stars were already in last—after making the Conference Finals last season—before Morrow got hurt. I’ll get the interns on it, but I’m pretty sure that the Yzerman-led Wings never found themselves in that situation after a deep playoff run the year before. I’ll let you know.

Nitpicky? I guess. But comparisons like that tend to get legs. If you’re going to say a player is “on par” with anything related to Steve Yzerman, I’d expect you have your ducks in a row. In this case, Burnside doesn’t.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
