Oh How The Wings Defensive Corp Has Changed

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

So what will the Wings’ defensive lineup look like against the Ducks?

You will have Cholowski, Hronek and Sulak, all playing in their third NHL game. Hicketts will be in his seventh NHL game. Jensen is starting his second full NHL season, and then you have the elder statesman, DeKeyser.

DeKeyser says it's been since college when he's felt like the seasoned veteran on defense.

“I was always the youngest defenseman here, for the last four or five years," he said. “It is weird how it’s changed.”

Just look at the ice time Sunday in Los Angeles.

Cholowski, who earned an NHL job days before the others to begin the season and has been the most impressive of the young defensmen, led all Wings in ice time with 24 minutes, 50 seconds.

Honest question though: 2 years later, would you rather have Cholowski or Chychryn?

I think that’s a tough call. But that’s not a fair question. It should be: would you rather have Cholowski/Hronek/Datsyuk’s cap space for a year or Chychrun? There, I’d have to go with the former.

Probably a better question to ask in two more years. But even right now I’d probably take Cholo and Hronek simply because the Wings are building for the future and need as many D-men as possible.

What might complicate this question further is one could argue that the cap space created by the trade was actually a negative thing for the Wings. Signing Neilsson, while decent, may not be worth the money and term invested in him.
