Needed: Talent

from Corey Pronman of The Athletic,
I took a glance at all 31 teams’ depth charts to get an idea of what is the most glaring organizational need heading into the 2020 NHL Draft. These needs may not be the No. 1 priority to address, as it depends on how the board plays out, but something I think is worth considering.
Detroit Red Wings: Talent
Detroit had 23 fewer points than the second-lowest team in the league. It had a strong albeit not incredible farm system. It has some good players, like Dylan Larkin, Anthony Mantha, Filip Hronek, Filip Zadina and Moritz Seider. Even though the Red Wings have some great pieces, they need a lot more – at every position. The pressing need for this organization is good players.

“The pressing need for this organization is good players.”
Pronman really drilled down with laser focus on the DRW “most glaring organizational need”, eh?

Positionally, including longer-term there is no
really obviously impactful goalie prospect in the system.
A guy who struggled a lot in his first pro season and two long-term
maybe/maybe not prospects who haven’t played a game of pro hockey in NA.
The Wings badly need at least a #2 center if not first line
- at worst a tandem with someone as good as Larkin.
It’s not at all clear Veleno at this best is that guy.
And Rasmussen looks like a #3 center project or net front specialist.
And they still need a top-two really offensively dynamic impact defenseman,
ideally in the Heiskenen, Makar, Hughes mold.
They need a lot more than that. But I’d start with those three
in the order of who has the combination of highest end potential and
best shot of reaching it.

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
