Media Recap Of The Wings 7-6 OT Loss To The New York Islanders

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

You’re rarely going to see a more bizarre game as this one.

The Red Wings let a potential key victory slip away in strange fashion, 7-6, Friday in overtime to the New York Islanders at the Barclays Center.

But the way they got there was as unusual as you’re going to see.

The Red Wings had compete control and led 5-2, then saw forward Tyler Bertuzzi take a match penalty for slashing at 13 minutes, 27 seconds of the third period.

Amazingly, the Islanders scored four times on Bertuzzi’s five-minute penalty, and took an improbable 6-5 lead with 1:49 left in regulation.

Still reeling, the Red Wings recovered and tied it on Mike Green’s goal with 29 seconds left.

Bertuzzi said he was responding to Clutterbuck’s crosscheck.

“I was skating to the bench and he kind of pushed me,” Bertuzzi said. “It was heat of the moment. I just turned and slashed. I don’t think it deserved a five, but I think it deserved a two-minute penalty.

“It was more or less just sticking up for myself and not taking stuff from anyone. I’m a young guy in the league. It was heat of the moment. I regret it, but at the end of the day, I don’t think it was a five-minute penalty.”

Teammates likewise decried the length of the penalty.

“I was right in front of it,” Anthony Mantha said. “Obviously Clutterbuck tries to crosscheck Bert, Bert turns around and I think the linesman thought it was harder maybe than what it actually was.”

Henrik Zetterberg said “it better be really, really serious if you’re going to call a five-minute on that. That’s a tough call to take even though we probably should have figured out how to kill a little bit better.”

Another day, another ref embarrassing the league, and another game with the Wings embarrassing themselves.

This team is excellent at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

I don’t want to comment specifically about the way the team played or about Bert’s penalty until I see the highlights for myself. A couple of things seem obvious though.

Getting scored on 4 times in a five-minute span simply should not happen. What went wrong? I don’t know but a team that allows that many is not well-coached and/or playing with no confidence. This team allows goals at the most ill-timed moments and as Hootinini stated, is consistently good at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

That’s a locker room with no faith in each other and likely broken faith in their coach or leadership group. It has occurred too often under Blashill and we get the same tired lenity of excuses only to see the team perform even worse the next time they step on the ice.

In part, I am both happy and sad about this loss, because every loss should drive home to management that there is a fundamental problem with the way the roster is constructed and that there is an urgent need for new direction. There are a lot of good pieces on this roster but the pieces don’t fit when it comes to forming a cohesive team and winning attitude.

Newfie, basically the PK unit forgot how to function. I believe Blashill used the term “shooting gallery” in his post game to describe what took place. It was really bad.

I know Jensen and DDK were out there. I’m pretty sure Helm was. It was a mess.
