Jeff here, filling in for Paul, who would normally fill in for the Master Chief. Wings have a chance to start a road winning streak, let’s blog it(!)

Scrambling around in our own zone leads to an goal where two Wings were screening Conklin in addition to the guy screening and tipping. Not a play to we should be proud of. As Yzerman demonstrated, if you are going to block the puck, get on the ice and block it, don’t just screen your own goalie.

I hate the Islanders more than they deserve.
Posted by SolidTG7 on 01/10/12 at 09:12 PM ET
Heh. I’m actually solidly impressed but still astounded that they’re that low in the standings with that kind of effort against the Wings.

Babcock really needs to tear this team a new a**hole in the press after this game.

I have one word. the DENNIS system
Posted by VooX from Behind the Bar in the Hasek Club Car on 01/10/12 at 09:11 PM ET
I’ve got that on DVR but haven’t seen it.
So, the Isle somehow have more goals than shots.

A bench of clockwatchers and then Abdelkader who looked pissed. There should be a bench of Abdelkaders, not clock watchers. Losing should be an insult tonight.

Hello? Hello? ........
Will the last man out turn off the lights in the Hasek?

5th seed.
I don’t know. Goal differential says second at least, but goal differential isn’t everything.

So I haven’t checked the standings, the Isle must be number 1 in the east?
Posted by RWBill from the open bar on The Hasek. on 01/11/12 at 12:17 AM ET
Thank God, an icing to relieve the pressure.

Uncle Mike applauds the pointless timeout taken by the Isles. Pure anger. I love it, get him nice and riled up before he addresses the team in a minute.

Isle caled a time out with 22 seconds left with a 5-1 lead
Uncle Mike aint happy.

Isles played a perfect game tonight. Absolutely perfect. Want a blueprint to beat this group of Wings with the propensity to start slow? Put this game in your arsenal.
Posted by SYF from the Flood on 01/11/12 at 12:23 AM ET
Too bad they don’t play again, they deserve a beat down after that.

Babcock has a long memory, like Gordie.
Posted by RWBill from the open bar on The Hasek. on 01/11/12 at 12:31 AM ET
Since 2008:
2012 1-5
2011 3-4
2010 0-6
2009 0-2
2008 no game
Wings score against the Isles since 2008: 4-17. Dis-fuching-graceful.

So looks like it was a good game to miss.
Ugh.

I’m too lazy to retype this comment I posted over at Malik’s thread:
Hey George.
Lots of back and forth on the LB about what Holland might do with all that cap space.
Before looking at blowing 5.75 just for this season, a look ahead might be in order:
UFA at end of this season (current salary):
Hudler (3.0)
Bert (1.625)
Homer (1.5)
TPH (6.2)
Stu (3.75)
C64 (1.0)
Conk (750)
RFA
Helm (1.0)
Gator (0.825)
I’m no savant, but you have to think the RFA’s are getting a raise, which may or may not coincide with any elevation in the CAP (which all presupposes the NHL and NHLPA reach an accord). Stu might get a little more to entice him to stay. Not even touching TPH, give him whatever the hell he wants.
Saying all that, long term looks like DET could add a top tier forward.
The terms sniper, heart, power forward have all been bounced around, what say you?

Well, Shane Doan is currently the Captain of the Coyotes but probably still has several top tier seasons left.

RE: the timeout taken by Capuano in the last 22 seconds of the third. Someone commented on TSN that it was an icing call. If Conks touched it up, it negated the icing and the Isles couldnt make a change (since he had a shift that was out there for a long time, it appears). Apparently, you can make a shift change on the timeout but you can’t if Conks touched up the puck.
I’ve never heard of that rule before.

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome: wphoulihan@gmail.com
5th seed.
