An additional tweet from Friedman,

and that last year is not the way he wants to finish his career. He added he’s been training for two months in preparation, and that he’s discussed with his family the possibility of moving away for a year if somewhere close to home is not an option.

I appreciate his motivation to go out on his own terms.

It’s obviously not going to benefit him to play behind the team that badly trailed second worst in points last season. And the Wings clearly need a guy who isn’t as close to the end of his career and can come in and give them a solid tandem the skaters know will give them a fighting chance. Whatever went so wrong last season a fresh start is badly needed.

Good luck, Jimmy!

Best of luck Jimmy.

I second that. It seemed like he lost some of his reflexes last season. Hope I’m wrong.

“Jimmy Howard, you can’t play anymore” in the NHL. However, beer leagues always need goalies.

My proof:
2-23 with a 4.20 GAA and 0.882 SV% in 1,372 minutes.

yeah and behind which defense, actually?

jimmy sucked. big time. so did the rest of the team, historically.
so ... your point is?

The same defense played in front of Bernier.  From December 9th on, he was the 6th best in the NHL with 9.91 GSAA.

Using Hockey Reference’s Standing Points Above Replacement (SPAR) Howard had the 17th worst goalie season in SPAR.60 since 2007-08. Bernier was in the top half of the league, even playing behind Detroit’s defense.

This nullifies the thought that Howard was so bad this season because he was playing behind a weak defense.

In fact Howard had an extreme drop-off compared to the previous year (at a time when goalies rapidly age in their career—age 35 year or later). Yet, even if Howard goes onto have one of the top improvements year-over-year: he would still only barely be above replacement-level goalie. That’s why you can safely say:

His career is over. That is the point.

“Someone is going to have to tell me I can’t play anymore”...

Clearly Jimmy has been taking the Covid Isolation more serious than most, is he living in a cold war era nuclear bunker?

Well said. Love the guy and hope he finds a place to play and can bounce back and look like he still belongs, but last year was terribad and based on his age and level of decline the future isn’t very promising.
